Cities exist to concentrate large amounts of people into once space in order to justify the construction of major airports, which in turn, attract airplanes for the purpose of Wendover Productions to make videos on. This comment has been brought to you by Squarespace :)

I'm surprised you didn't include Choice as a reason why people live in cities. Cites offer a variety of things to choose from: what kind of job to have, where to live, what to do for recreation -- and this gives people the feeling that they are choosing their life circumstances. There is perhaps nothing as defeating to the human spirit as having no choice. That's the reason cities are expensive: for each thing you choose to do, all the things you didn't choose to do need to be paid for too. But we're willing to pay a premium in order to have a range of options available to us. Mind you...having things to choose among means that you are one of the things other people may choose or not choose, hence cites can be lonely places.

@@cabron247 this is overly simplistic. Specialized workers (outside of agriculture and forestry) live in cities because that is where their jobs generally are. I'm from Metro Manila and I did not realize how densely populated this place is until I came to visit Brisbane. Jfc it's not even a joke. The astonishing difference in population has a huge impact in the psychology of a person. Suddenly, I can breathe well, able to sleep early, wake up early, eat just enough and did not crave for more intake, and many more.

Istanbul and Moscow are bigger than London, and Saint Petersburg, Berlin, Madrid, Kiev and Rome are bigger than Paris. Maybe in the video you wanted to say "the bigger metropolitan/urban areas in the EU/Western Europe", that would be correct, with London and Paris closely in 1st and 2nd, with some sources indicating Paris as the first, and others London.

I hate to be that moaner on the internet, but I don't like that you said the population of Paris was 2.2 million. Paris (officially) is the tiny, extremely densely populated core of a massive urban conurbation home to almost 11 million people. Admittedly, this is slightly higher than the population of London's urban area (closer to 10 million) so it wouldn't exactly prove your point; however, London's metro area is still roughly 2 million inhabitants higher than Paris's, which also gives a much better visualisation of their actual size. I also have to point out (sorry) that Moscow (by official size, it's technically part of Europe as is east of the Ural mountains) is home to around 3 million more people than London (also by official size). When we compare their urban areas Moscow has almost 6 million more people than London, and by metro area Moscow is still roughly 6 million larger. Edit: oh yeah, the other city populations annoy me too; official city boundaries are just too arbitrary to use whilst trying to prove a point. Once again I'm sorry and thanks for reading the whole comment.

Taking Russia and Turkey out, London and Paris ARE 1-2...but only if you count the whole metropolitan area, not just the actual cities proper. As shown in the video, Berlin proper has more people than Paris proper, as do Madrid, Kiev and Rome. However, the Paris metro area (around 12 million people) is roughly that of Berlin's and Madrid's combined.

Hello makers of wendover productions! I am a huge fan on your videos, you do such an amazing job producing these top quality videos. I was wondering in the near future if you could produce a video on "Why the family dairy farms are disappearing" I feel that you would explain and go deeper in depth than any other KZread channel I know. If you did this I would be forever grateful! Thanks for considering my idea🙂

I am from the Detroit area, lived her my whole life. It’s sad to see how much the city has declined because of the big 3 moving production elsewhere. Even today with foreign car companies starting to dominate the market, Auto workers here are hurting for over time. However, the city is starting to ‘find’ itself again. Dan Gilbert has focused on buying buildings and has grown his Quicken Loans company so big in the Metro Detroit area. I believe cities can come back, it’s about finding that niche.

How could cities not be natural? This is the way things are going, it's part of nature. It may be damaging, feel wrong, it may deprive us of green spaces and clean air, but it is still part of the natural cycle of what humans as a species are doing, all over the world. This is nature. As is destruction and war, sadly.
