Why Chrollo Lucilfer is One of the Best Antagonists EVER

Ойын-сауық

• Who Is Chrollo Lucilfe... - this video was a huge inspiration for my own. While most of the thoughts in my video are ones I developed on my own while reading/watching Hunter x Hunter, the idea of Chrollo finding meaning and identity within the Phantom Troupe was something that I first encountered while watching Aleczandxr's video. Please go watch his stuff as well if you get the chance!

    Hey everyone, thank you SO much for the love this video's gotten recently! I've been trying to upload more analysis, but some copyright issues have prevented me from doing so until today. That being said, please check out my channel for a brand new video about Hisoka and Gon's fight during the Heavens Arena arc - it's the newest video so should be at the top of the page :)

    @@e6em Simply put, Chrollo is a character that Togashi created purely to showcase the expertise of nen. His motives are clouded in mystery and they don’t seem to follow any real logic. Even though he’s incredibly intelligent, plenty of what Chrollo does, (or at least the way it’s portrayed) is arbitrary to some degree. You can’t project your perception of evil on to someone else because you don’t understand what led them to become who they are. Their circumstances I mean. Meteor City is depicted as a place that is desolate and run down. In the HxH realm everyone has a clear role to play but it’s obvious that when it’s comes to Chrollo, Togashi is fond of using him to display the absurdities of the nen power system. He enjoys the freedom that comes with a character who possesses traits like Chrollo’s. It’s less about what he’s done, more about what he’s capable of in the story. Chrollo once said “Making the ability yours while exploring the darkness within the soul of the original owner. That’s the true benefit of Skill Hunter” which is really just some insight into how Togashi thinks as a person. It’s interesting

    Here is my complete analysis of Chrollo Lucilfer as a character: I see Chrollo as the absence of character, and by "the absence of character" here I mean the lack of personality. When asked about his motivations he doesn't really know what to respond. He is always stoic. It seems to me that Chrollo is a person without much desire, motivation and emotions. He doesn't really seem alive most of the time (in contrast to the troupe members, who are very vehement). Chrollo's greatest (maybe only) wish seems to be what he is not, a person with a strong personality, with a fascinating story. He tried to achieve this goal through many ways. He created a group of people with very strong personalities to counteract his own absence of personality. He is said to only steal objects that have a certain history and/or significance, "stealing their history" (He literally stole other people's eyes, metaphorically taking their vision of the world for himself). He also reads a lot, and reading books is a form of escapism, a way to see life through another's lenses. We saw how easy it was for him to become someone else (when he interacted with Neon), taking a role. His Hatsu (which is said to be a reflection of the user's personality) is all about stealing other Hatsus, even stating that what he really likes about "Skill Hunter" is understanding and mimicking the mind that created the Hatsu he is currently using. Although it is important to keep in mind that; despite his overall internal emptiness and unenthusiasm, he still cares for his fellow companions in the Phantom Troupe, even considering them as "friends" in his conversation with Neon. He cries when hearing about Uvogin's death and proceeds to mourn his passing by organizing the well-known "requiem". He is also seen to be extremely disturbed and angry after the death of Shalnark and Kortopi. This close relationship with the members of the troupe can serve as a reflection of the supposedly strong, deep and unbreakable bond that ties the citizens of Meteor City; or maybe it represents his desperate and unique attempt at building and constructing a concrete personality and identity; and finding meaning in life via the troupe, possibly all of the above. In short, Chrollo Lucilfer IS the Phantom Troupe; and the Phantom Troupe IS him. However, this particular emotional attachement is exclusive only to the Phantom Troupe. His indifference to other people's lives can be proven by his statement in the fight with Hisoka when he says that he fails to see a difference between a puppet and a human being, denoting his extreme nihilism. Nonetheless, he still holds some interest towards the human behaviors in general, which can be supported by his comments: "Humans are truly so very fascinating." -- "Humans are such a strange, mysterious thing...". What is fascinating - and frightening - by Chrollo is that he has become really good at becoming someone else for a moment. As someone who is no one he really has the potential to be everyone he wishes to be. In conclusion, I think that Chrollo is by far the most interesting character in HxH and easily one the best antagonists in all anime/manga. By the way, I really enjoy watching your videos. Hope you get the recognition you deserve. Keep up the good work! 👊🏾💯🔥

It's not just his ideology, but his identity, his purpose, his reason, his existence, his life now and beyond death. This might sound weird, or even stupid but what if the spiders are like his 12 different personality traits, and he thinks of them as one person? For example, when shalnark dies in the manga, chrollo is seen way more sadder than he originally would be, and while that may be because his companion died, it also might mean he lost his somewhat cheerful personality trait, because in my opinion shalnark was probably the least depressed in the phantom troupe. Also kind of explains his eyes when illumi joined the phantom troupe. Idk tho just a thought. 🤷‍♀️

    Chrollo seems to suffer from low self worth. He seems to mostly gain a sense of purpose through the Spiders. This is clear when he was kidnapped and was convinced that the Spiders wouldn't try to save him because his life had no meaning. Logically this shouldn't make any sense since he's the leader, and the head should be more important than the legs. Yet he thinks the opposite, that he's the one whose most disposable. This only makes sense once you realize that he believes himself to be valueless and expendable, and thus believes that his life can't have value to others. This is a more common line of thinking for people who suffer from low self esteem and self worth.

    i dont believe he has low self worth, he wouldnt have goals or feel worthy of being the leader of the gang if that was the case. He is just more observational and objective, impersonal, he is a cloud with eyes. Objectively his life is worthless, subjectively not. He understands others well cuz he understands himself well. He dont feel his emotions but he rather observes them and yes he do feels them and manifest them, not always. also feeling or having a tought without purpose is another reason he is "introverted", not introverted but less expressfull, feelings and toughts are not yours always they just pass by thats why attending them is irrelevant cuz they serve no purpose, thats why its intresting to understand people and their tought patterns and the reason why they probably have those tought patterns. He is indifferent to death, cuz death will come either way. I share his toughts by always thinking, what do i want, why do i want what i want, so what if i get it. its got not to do with self worth its just observing reality. what if i marry the love of my life, what if not, i will live and die either way, im ok with it. i think he gains purpose through spider cuz if not that what else, money/fame/legacy? those are consumables, they are temporary. What he enjoys is experience, experiences lasts with u. its more purposeful and entertaining to be a part of something and understand and feel like a lot of people than just yourself and also to read. also what is more entertaining than being curious and understand humans around yourself.

I don’t think Crollo is best antagonist but HxH as an manga, anime or even story telling totally change expectations of readers or viewers. Like when Gon was training to defeat Hisoka you would expect Gon to beat him or at least make it competitive but that did not happen or in Crimera Ant arc Gon was not the main character . Sadly HxH all these arcs was just introduction for the Dark Continent build up.

    With these recent chapters, if Togashi is setting up what I think he is setting up the setting of Kurapika vs Phantom Troupe may become muddier with more information. It can be a very important commentary on how disenfranchised groups are pitted against each other. One group being residents of one of the poorest vulnerable places at one point against the last member of a dying out persecuted minority. I think it can emotionally impact me even more than the last act of the chimera ant arc did.

    For me the most terrifying thing about Chrollo is not his power, intellect or cruelty, it is his appearance. Other characters Uvogin, Feitan and Phinks have the faces of murderous thugs and therefore anyone with common can see they are monsters. Chrollo on the other hand has the appearance of a common civilian, his voice is soft and he is able to come off as a kind and harmless person. It reminds me of monsters in real life like Himmler or Beria that at first glance seem insignificant and can pass as normal people but they are completely hideous and twisted people.

    Chrollo is a very compelling antagonist(for different reasons then Hisoka)...not evil (I'd say he's more of a bad guy rather then evil for the sake of being evil (like Togashi presented Gyro) but he's very charismatic smart pretty complex about his ideals(about life and death) and has Nen ability that fits his actions of a thief...he has no real identity outside being the head of the spider while he considers the legs to be more important i do make distinctions between bad and evil(examples for bad are Aizen Kaido Meruem Chrollo Madara Pain Obito Furuta Zeref(those with a decent end goal but evil actions in the way of reaching this goal)...evil are characters like All For One Imu Dio Lucifero Otsutsuki clan ) He is 1 of those rare villains

  • @Kuro4

    @Kuro4

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I’d say Chrollo doesn’t necessarily have a big end goal that justifies his actions, but he isn’t presented as evil really. He has a very abnormal moral compass which facilitates him being the way he is

  • @joseole1117

    @joseole1117

    He was perfectly fine with genocide and cutting out dead peoples eyes to sell them for quick cash. He is 100 percent evil and only cares about his own gang, which who knows why he even cares about them, perhaps because he views them as his little puppets rather than actual people. Yes chrollo can experience deep emotion but it's not true empathy rather just grief over losing his valuable puppets. HE views people as property nothing more nothing less. now he still is an intriguing figure and is very cold and calculated which makes him fun to watch despite being evil.

    @@joseole1117 I think your point of view is understandable, but I also believe you're selling Chrollo short as a character. There are plenty of characters who view their followers as "puppets" (One Piece has a couple good examples of this archetype, the Godhand from Berserk, Light from Death Note), and I've never seen one of those characters show the type of remorse and grief Chrollo has in regards to the Phantom Troupe. I believe Chrollo cares about the members of the Troupe, but he also views the Troupe as something that provides him with purpose and meaning in life. Both things can be true at once. Does this make him a good person? Of course not - but I don't believe he represents the type of pure evil that can be found in some other antagonists.

    I love Chrollo in the 1999 show, but in 2011 a lot of his scenes are done very poorly, with him moving far less impressively/emotionally at the requiem, his confrontation with Kurapika in the car having inappropriate voice acting and music that don't seem to understand the scene and its tone and do a really bad job character building, as well as pretty bad editing which loses the tension and sense of claustrophobia, plus not containing the best parts that were included in the 1999 version like the beat-down, and the moment Kurapika starts with the beatdown makes almost no sense in 2011 while in 1999 Chrollo reveals his taunting and manipulation and control of the situation to goad him. 2011 tries to make Chrollo larger than life, while 1999 keeps him very human When I finished watching 2011's York-New for the first time I gave it a 2/10 and thought it was the worst arc of the show, when I watched the 1999 version a few months later I gave it a 9.5/10 and thought it was the best part of HxH. Rewatching parts of both shows for comparison only strengthened that belief

    Chrollo falls somewhere between Hisoka and Illumi --- he's not as extreme as either of them But, then again, he has both Hisoka and Illumi's weird/mysterious personality traits which make him all the more mysterious While in visuals and in many conversations, Chrollo seems like a person who can suit as a protagonist or as a caring antagonist who has reasons for the path he chooses, Chrollo doesn't know himself (as stated here) Probably as Chrollo is still shrouded with mystery and has mysterious elements from antagonists from other series all mixed in his character, i never paid him as much attention as Hisoka or Illumi But, Chrollo being a mystery in all aspects (starting from all the nen powers in that book or the conditions to satisfy to steal a power, to the purpose of his existence and reasons for his actions --- nothing is known) is a unique trait and that veil of mystery around him just makes it more worth for people to explore deep into the character

  • @jeemu3141

    @jeemu3141

    2 жыл бұрын

    I like to point out that mystery alone is not what makes a character good, sure it sparks interest and intrigue but that's just the surface level. If you're gonna make a character the mysterious type, you have to make sure the character isn't just enigmatic for the sake of being enigmatic, they should have substance to them and actually be possible to decipher. Chrollo isn't just a great character cus he's mysterious, he's great cus his mysterious nature can be deciphered if you're observant enough and when you unravel who he is, he's revealed to be a very complex and interesting character so the question of "who this person is?" Actually has a satisfying answer. Most hxh fans forget this sadly and just like his character cus he looks "cool and mysterious", never actually understanding his character even this video didn't feel like it did Chrollo justice, most of the time he just talked about how cool and mysterious Chrollo looks, pretty surface level stuff.
