I think the official in-universe reason is that the Word must be spoken with a specific intent in mind, a heroic intent. Introducing yourself with the Word, even if doing so to introduce yourself _as a hero,_ is not saying the word with explicitly heroic intent.

Billy Batson will always be the true Captain Marvel to me.

I didn't even noticed you calling him "Captain Marvel" I'm used to this name because of the 2000's justice league animation and Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe, where he was named Captain Marvel, I felt weird while playing Injustice 1 and seeing "Shazam" there

I'm younger and I still know him as Captain Marvel because of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, I learnt pretty much everything about DC from there

New 52 had continuity issues abound, but visually a lot of it was really cool.

For me, I always thought his name should've been Shazam. Him screaming his name to transform just makes sense.

What he is doing when he calls down the power is prematurely accessing his full future employment perks so to speak has Shazam the wizards successor.

Ahhh, tge captain marvel saga. Fun times. I didn’t even register why people would be confused about this, it’s such common knowledge to comic fans

And in the Amalgam Comics universe, DC/Flawcett Captain Marvel and Marvel Captain Marvel were fused to make Captain Marvel aka Billy Mar-Vell and instead of yelling "SHAZAM!, he would yell "KREE!".

I always thought his name was captain marvel when I was younger, but my school friends all “corrected” me with “No, that’s Shazam!”

My dad is an old age comics fan and so I've grown up calling him Captain Marvel my entire life

I came to know of Billy Batson from the DCU movie where they call him Shazam but I've always preferred Captain Marvel. I feel like it fits in better with the rest of the Justice League and the comedy of all these adults referring to a child as Captain

They changed is so he can say it whenever he wants, he only reverts back when he wishes to

So... Captain Marvel was selling better than Superman, DC got bitter and sued, and later scooped up the character for themselves... What the actual hell.

That last panel from Kingdom Come is one of my favourite Captain Marvel moments, even if it is a More Good thing happening in the story.

Funny enough, in the MK vs DC videogame, that came out I believe around 2008 - 2009, he introduced himself as Captain Marvel. But in Injustice, series technically made by the same company, he's refered to as Shazam going forward.

I learned from Comic Drake that when Mar Vell died, Marvel introduced Monica Rambeau as the new Captain Marvel so they could keep having a character with that title. If I’m remembering right, Monica went by that name by complete coincidence. She had nothing to do with Mar Vell at the time. Also she was the leader of the Avengers at one point!?
