Leading a strange man into a subway tunnel he might get eaten or used for slave labor, of course gamma rays, cosmic rays, getting bite by spider, being struck by radioactive waste and struck by lightning and falling into a batcave might kill you also. Lots of characters had superman like powers before Superman including Greek and Roman gods and heroes, same with other religious heroes such as Solomon wisdom and Samson strength. Hugo Hercules comic stripe (1902), Popeye comic stripe (1929), and Gladiator novel (1930), Lothar in Mandrake the magician stripe (1934) could also be inspirations for Superman with speed, strength and invulnerablity to bullets, etc.

I think why Captain Marvel was a big hit than Superman was because of Shazam being a kid. If you look at this way. A lot of kids looks up to Superman becoming like him. Strong, fast and a super hero. with Billy turning into one, it shows that even a kid it is possible to be a hero like Superman. (In the comic perspective) So In the reality, kids are now able to "relate" what Billy is like. A boy growing up then able to gain magic powers. Unlike Superman who was shown as an adult. also looking back in my childhood this also show that kids can perform what they normally could do (looking for achievements in their lives even at an early age). Also, Thank you Arris/Variant Comics for posting up this video request on Shazam.

Sahar1041 Not really. It has an actual good soundtrack, all the films are memorable and it's become pretty good now. It's not ashamed of being based on comics like Marvel is (Asgardians are aliens for some reason), has actual colours, won an actual oscar, better women led film, an actual funny comedy film in Shazam and a great comic book movie in Aquaman. Marvel has 20 films, most are average, some good and some bad. DCEU has 7 films and 4 are great, 2 are average and 1 is bad. Much better track record

@Sahar1041 DC Shows are better The initial CW seasons were good, but they got bland at the end, except the crossovers. Doom Patrol is honestly amazing. Gotham is really good. Krypton is amazing. Titans was good. Black lightning is really good. Netflix MCU was shit apart from Daredevil S1 and 3, Jessica Jones and Maybe Luke Cage. Iron Fist and Defenders were boring piles of garbage.

Fun fact, there were three other Billy Batsons in the original Shazam comics. They all had nick names, but the only one I remember is Hill Billy named so because he was from a rural area. They all had the a portion of Shazam's power and would aid the Marvel Family if they needed extra muscle. Golden Age Shazam was a wild and silly ride.

The name of the Comic book was changed to Shazam (It was originally Whiz comic and later Captain Marvel, Marvel also has character with that name so DC to avoid copy right issues changed the book to Shazam. The character is called Captain Marvel, he never calls himself Shazam that is what they called the Wizard that gave him his power and what he says to transform.

Personally, I am a big fan of "Shazam/Captain Marvel" and this segment helped me to understand about the comic book franchise. Thanks, Arris.

The writers have an explanation for that, Superman isn’t weak against magic, he can just get affected by it, like how anyone else can get wet when they step into rain. It’s not the same as kryptonite. Although I’m not sure if this only pertains to new 52 Superman or both post and pre-crisis.

Always been a huge fan of Shazam! Awesome character and loved that him and Black Atom were in Injustice and got the exposure they deserve this generation!

I think it was a bad idea for DC to change C. Marvel's name to SHAZAM. Imagine when SHAZAM saves someone and then they say: Person A: What's your name mister? shazam: SHAZAM!! **Transforms back to Billy**  BOOOOOM!! secret identity revealed.

Actually, that problem was fixed. For him to change back, he has to say his name, and want to change back to Billy. I think this is a little stupid, and personally will always call Earth's Mightiest Mortal 'Captain Marvel' no matter what his name is currently, but still... For him to change back into billy, or change from billy into Captian Marvel, he has to say "SHAZAM!" with meaning.

So I may be imagining this but does anyone notice how Captain Marvel (not calling him Shazam because I think its a bit dumb why he had to change his name) gets the short end of the stick at times? Injustice: Gets easily killed by Superman and serves no real purpose in the plot. Justice League Unlimited: Easily gets beat by Superman despite having magic and likely equal strength. Flashpoint: Is somehow forced to transform back into the Marvel Kids or what ever the group of kids were called and Billy was then shanked by Wonder Woman even though the Lasso just makes you tell the truth and not mind control you (and wouldn't he still be able to control his transformation?) Superman/Shazam: In his animated movie he still needed Superman around to help him fight Captain Adam. Young Justice: Seems a bit dumber despite the Wisdom of Solomon and lives in a run down apartment. As I said, I could be imagining this but it just seems strange.

Shazam art especially done by Alex Ross are masterpieces.

One of my favorite heroes. Spidey, Batman, Punisher, Shazam and Wolverine, I love these characters so much. Shazam is a special case because he is my superman so to speak. All the others have some mundane flaws, but Shazam/Captain Marvel is the stereotype, he represents that mighty superhero.

DC didn't buy the character. They were jealous of Captain Marvels success and sued claiming it was a Superman knockoff. DC won and out of spite buried Captain Marvel. When Marvel started using the name, DC tried to sue out of spite, but lost this time. They revived the character with the name Shazam.

Very nicely done piece of video. Good tech. You got most of the history right, and I appreciate your passion for the character. Just a few details: Fawcett's copyright had not lapsed, it was the trademark that had been abandoned, allowing MF Enterprises to publish their own Captain Marvel, in 1966. That comic failed, but Marvel Comics decided that they ought to have a Captain Marvel, and seized the trademark in 1967. Solomon is Hebrew, Hercules is the Roman name of Herakles, Atlas is Greek, Zeus is Greek, Achilles is Greek, and Mercury is Roman. Billy's middle name of "Joseph," Billy's parents, and Theo Adam were al part ot Jery Ordway's 1990's reboot of the character in "The Power of Shazam." Black Adam was a one-shot villain and Billy's parents and middle name were never revealed in the original comics.

Captain Nazi (lol) was created in the 1940's during WWII, that's why his name sounds so outdated. But yea, they should probably upgrade it to something a little more modern, like the Sneaky Schnitzel!

J Silva Shazam can completely beat superman. If not in strength, he has magic, which is critically deadly to superman. Superman has absolutely no guard against Magic.

Isn't the wisdom of Solomon a cistern thing?

I still think that there should either be new Percy Jackson movies, OR, but probably never going to happen, some sort of Percy Jackson video game, I mean, it combined Greek, comedy, adventure, and just flat out F****ING AWSOME!

I Learned a Valuable Lesson today:" If you follow men in a dark coat he will lead you to a "Magical" subway and you shall find a "Old Man" who will give you "Powers" and the dark coat guy is your dad"

So far, you haven't done a History of any female heroes of villians, so why not a History of Wonder Woman to break the metaphorical ice.

When Fawcett comics stopped making Shazam stories, the British company that was printing Shazam changed the character. Captain Marvel became Marvelman later to be renamed Miracleman. Miracleman ownership was claimed by Neil Gaiman and Marvel versus Todd Macfarlane. So now Marvel owns a version of the original Captain Marvel.

New 52’s Shazam origin is better

soloman has nothing to do with Greek Mythology. He is a king of Israel mentioned in the bible.

only magic shazam can use against superman is saying shazam so superman just picks him up real quick, marvel turns back into a kid cover his and the knock him out. (justice league unlimited) kid brain vs adult brain

I really hope when they make the Captain Marvel film they will base it on the original Captain marvel origins instead of DC's 52 version. I Adore Captain Marvel because of his pure heart and I don't think I could enjoy the film as much if Billy Batson was a Brat. Captain Marvel should show that in true adversity a good heart always prevails, for a better world the fight isn't with others but in ones self. shazam

Solomon had nothing to with mythology at all, he was a Jewish king not a Greek god. Atlas was a Titan not a god. Hercules was a demigod and not a full on god. Achilles also was not a god and only debatably a demigod.

Right, I just wanted to point Solomon out because I thought it was important to say he was a Jewish king who was recognized as the wisest man who lived, by people from a slightly more racist time. I am probably wording this as good as I should though.

Yes, I noticed that, along with its not just Greek, but also Roman. For example: Hermes; Greek...Mercury; Roman.( M is for Mercury) I know it's not such a big deal, but just an observation.

Darren Craigg as they have told you Hercules was a demigod, his father was Zeus and his mom a mortal name Alcmene. Zeus like many other greek gods loved to come to the mortal realm and mate with human girls.

Changing his name to SHAZAM was really disappointing but understandable due to the circumstances of MCU, but it just doesnt feel right because whenever hed have to introduce himself hed have to say SHAZAM which should change his form.
