Why Can't India Make Processors || भारत कंप्यूटर चिप्स क्यों नहीं बना सकता

India is a manufacturing hub in smartphone automobiles rockets and everything still india cannot make microprocessors , semiconductors , mobile processors like china and taiwan does with intel and amd lets ee why india does not have the capability to do so.
The Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal had recently asked Indian industry to set up a semiconductor fabrication plant in India, but experts in the sector seem unsure if it’s a pragmatic proposition as the risks are too high and the invest...
Processor making is a very expensive procedure in terms of money , time and skills. Even a simple processor would require a team of ~100 people with different skill sets such as VLSI, Compilers , Operating Systems , Fabrication Specialists over a period of 4-5 years to make a processor. Intel's each processor Projects cost more than 100M$ each just to give you an idea of the money involved.
Finally you require a fabrication Plant where the processors are physically made. A latest FAB in 22nm technology would easily be worth over 15 Billion
India has the skills and I believe the money too. What lacks is the motivation/dedication to do something in hardware. So currently , in my knowledge there are two semiconductor fabs both owned by DRDO. They have a processor design team too. I do not know their success level in making a working processor.

There is also a huge scope for GaN (Gallium Nitride) fabs in India. These fabs are used to manufacture chips and components for electric vehicles and renewable energy industry. They have a huge scope in future as these industries have just begun to grow. India has just set up a lab in IISc Bangalore to manufacture GaN chips. This industry is in its nascent stage and India can emerge as a leader in this field if it works on it seriously.

one of the reasons can be, the bright and outstanding students work in fields other than education. due to obvious reasons. no attractive schemes for bright and experienced people to join the education. there can be a system in place, after working in other fields for a good amount of years, professional should be encouraged to join the education system at the university level, which can fill the void to some extent.

You are right. Our engineering syllabus is like you are given some thing half baked which is perceived as everything and the result we get is nothing. Even today I bet many electrical electronics and computer engineers don't know basics like phase voltage , line voltage neutral earth etc and we expect them to build chips which involves a very complex subject quantum mechanics. Unless we teach our youth to become experts with strong fundamentals we will not be able to make any thing.

One of major Indian companies backed by the government should collaborate with ( 50-50 % share or 40-60% share) either a Japanese, South Korean, or European countries (Swedish, or French or German company) and manufacture together. That way, the cost can be less, the experience gained is valuable, and then see how much market-share is captured in Microprocessor market. Than continuous improvement in Microprocessor design will be required to give edge in capturing market-share if they have a alternative better product that hardware manufacturers (cell phone, laptop, tablet, desktop manufacturers) wants. It will still be a uphill battle since this area will be hard to crack against well-established players.

They had also made India's first super computer together with ISRO's subsidiry named 'DRDO' in 90's when outsiders were not interested to invest in India or to help India to make one for us! But yes, over the period of time the business got reduced bcz of reduced demand and other related technological revolution internationally...but we should have to believe that we do have the fund providers capitalist businessmen in India who can make this happen with good talent so that Indian Techies should have to got outside the country and can fulfill their dreams in India living with their families....

It is not as difficult as it seems, we can manufacture within india just need to collaborate with semiconductor leaders like Samsung, micron, tsmc, towerjazz etc . Indian gov, local mnc & foreign mnc could spend equal amount of money so it won't burden on gov alone. (Uninterrupted power supply, pure water , transportation, skill labours won't be an issue as gov consistently working on to improve them)

And manufacturer for other companies. This proves that even china don't have own desgin or big soc company. Its better we also come in market using risc-v and arm desgin and try to manufactur using good and latest technologies like 3nm and 5nm. Its very hard to work from scratch but we can start by using open source desgin and arm desgin.

Well apple is also teying to make a shift in gaming industry though.

I understand the patriotism in the sentence "why can't India make processors" but when it comes to technology it does not matter where it's developed and who develops. When a new technology is developed it benefits the whole world and that is the basis of the modern world. For all mission-critical systems, India still develops its own custom computer components including processors but general-purpose processors are not really cost-effective and efficient if started from scratch. Just like operating systems early players have an advantage in processors.

Yeah but such processors are really power hungry and on top of that for most people their entire PC experience these days is restricted to web apps and light gaming. 64 core processors at the price point and power efficiency that AMD offers is great but an overkill for most people. Most people will not even be able to utilize an eight core modern processor to its fullest potential, I think something like M1 chip for a desktop PC will be more than sufficient for most people. So undeniably AMD is soon going to start facing competition from ARM based processors as well.

@@yuvrajkumar2048 Power matters a lot, at least to a certain section of people. AMD's 64 core processors will easily eat up 200-280 watts of power. You know these days ceiling fans use about 50-60 watts, so running a 280 watts cpu is indeed power intensive, now I know that the power usage depends on cpu load but even when idle a higher core processor could still be taking up 3 times the power. This higher power usage is not just reflected in electricity bills but also environmental impact. More people are becoming conscious of there are carbon foot print every passing day, so I think its still a relevant factor.

Maybe they can be use in slim laptops for good battery life life but never for desktop or making any supercomputer Also is kind of disservice to say that 'one of the reason we don't make processor cause if we can make similar chips nobody will be interested'. China is trying to copy that for quite a while but still unable make it so saying that we can make powerful 7nm processor but software developer will not be interested is totally wrong. If you can make that high quality chips there will be definitely lot of developers will come and we can make our own supercomputers.
