Inside Micron Taiwan’s Semiconductor Factory | Taiwan’s Mega Factories EP1

Ғылым және технология

Join us for a tour of Micron Technology’s Taiwan chip manufacturing facilities to discover how chips are produced and how innovations in the semiconductor industry impact people and businesses all over the world.
Take a look inside one of the semiconductor factories that make Taiwan the most significant site of semiconductor production in the world. Thanks to modern technology and constant innovations, chip manufacturing advances at a rapid pace. Today, each silicon microchip contains over 100 billion transistors, the switches that make up the basic units of computing. Each transistor is just a few nanometers in size, making them a fraction of the size of a human hair.
This means that even the slightest contamination can halt the entire chip production process. In fact, the semiconductor manufacturing process contains over 1,000 steps, all of which must be executed perfectly to produce functional chips. In Micron’s mega factory, silicon wafers are processed with incredible precision. The dustless factory is highly automated, which minimizes the number of humans required to enter. Each silicon wafer is coated in a UV-sensitive liquid, then etched using photolithography. We exhibit the entire process here in high resolution, giving you an inside look into the workings of one of the most high-tech factories in the world.
Micron Technology is a global leader in the semiconductor industry and produces leading-edge memory products. Its neighbor Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) produces industry-leading logic technology. These two companies constitute a large portion of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry, which spans the island from north to south. As they grow and continue to innovate, their products require more and more resources to produce, putting increasing pressure on the environment. Micron leaders share how they are expanding their innovative approach into the area of resource management, enabling them to create more sustainable products.

@@TsaicheW microchip design is mostly from the US, while the litho machines come from the Netherlands. ASML is the one who for a large part dictates progress in the semi conductor field as it is due to them that gates, transistors etc can be further miniaturized. Taiwan as a manufacturing hub is of great importance but due to the fabs opening in the EU and US this importance is shrinking rapidly. The production of microchips is far less complex than pushing physics (ASML) but that also applies to the design of new functionality through microchips. TSMC has a whole team of ASML employees present for maintenance as they are unable to do so themselves - the complexity is simply too great. TSMC is important but their importance should not be over-inflated. Lastly, TSMC was originally setup as a joint venture between the Taiwanese government and Philips of the Netherlands. ASML in turn is a spin-off of Philips. It all comes full circle.

@@ntro9347Have you seen the size of the TSMC factory? An ASML EUV machine is the size of a bus. Yes you can’t produce the best semiconductor chips without ASML machines but there must more to it than simply ASML. In other words maybe the Dutch should give it a try. Or the Americans can simply buy an ASML EUV machine and produce the best semiconductors themselves instead of asking TSMC to open a factory in Arizona.

Taiwan's Industrial and Overall Economic Strength. Many people are unaware of the industrial and overall economic strength of Taiwan today. Taiwan has a well-developed technology and manufacturing sector. It is ranked first in the world in semiconductor chip manufacturing, first in the world in ICT equipment manufacturing, third in the world in machinery and components manufacturing, third in the world in biotechnology companies, fourth in the world in machine tools, sixth in the world in chemical plants, and fifth in the world in shipbuilding tonnage. Taiwan's aerospace industry is also ranked sixth in the world in terms of output. Taiwan is also the world's largest and most technologically advanced carbon fiber composite material OEM, with applications ranging from tennis rackets and bicycles to aircraft components. Taiwan has many companies that are hidden champions in the global manufacturing sector. These companies are at the top of their respective industries, but they are not well-known to the general public. Taiwan has developed its own supercomputers, AI computers, quantum chips, satellites, and has successfully test-fired military space rockets on multiple occasions. In terms of overall technology and manufacturing strength, Taiwan is on par with the United States, Japan, and the EU industrial countries. Taiwan is currently the 20th largest economy in the world, with total foreign investment assets of over $2 trillion. It is the fifth largest foreign investor in the world and the fifth largest net creditor nation. Manufacturing accounts for over 36% of Taiwan's GDP and contributes over 50% to economic growth, the highest in Asia. Taiwan's listed companies invest and set up factories overseas, and their overseas offshore processing and manufacturing import and export trade exceeds $1 trillion each year (most of which is included in Hong Kong's import and export trade figures). The import and export trade of these Taiwanese companies is not included in Taiwan's import and export trade figures. If the import and export trade of Taiwanese companies' overseas factories is included in Taiwan's own import and export trade figures, the total global trade volume of Taiwanese companies will reach $1.9 trillion, surpassing Japan and the Netherlands to become the fourth largest trading power in the world after the United States, China, and Germany. Taiwanese companies' overseas factories have supported the families of hundreds of millions of employees in China, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia. It is estimated that Taiwan will enter the top 20 economies in the world in 2023 based on its own domestic production and manufacturing import and export trade, becoming a member of the G20. Among the G20 countries, Taiwan is the only one with no natural resources, relying solely on manufacturing, and with a population of 23.5 million and the smallest land area.

@@Mr.Tapori it all just depends, there are so many different levels of jobs required to make a fab like this operate. Some technician jobs require no experience and education and some jobs are very elite requiring many years of university and experience. Not to mention all the support jobs outside of fab that are essential for operations. Literally it takes a village to operate a fab….any specific question you have for a certain type of job maybe I can help you better!

Both China and Taiwan is pride of Asia. So as we love both China and Taiwan we don't want war between You. China and Taiwan both technically advanced and important countries for the world. So I request to Taiwan and Chinese government and people please try to avoid war, don't listen to USA , Taiwan please become a part or state of China. It's far more beneficial rather than engaging in war .
