That guys a nut job, your XJ-C is probably one of the nicest examples on sale anywhere in the world. A car of that age is going to need ongoing maintenance, and the bits you've pointed out are minimal. He'll have a job finding another on the market let alone in better nick. I'd sooner sell my house if I got to the point where I'd need to part ways with that beauty.

Well after so many nice comments I thought it was time Tyre Kicker (aka Greg) added a bit of true to the thread and perspective from a real buyer’s point of view. Brett is 100% correct the classic car market has completely tanked and therefore if you want to sell your car then it must be the best it can in the price bracket you are in. After Covid 19 the car market when up 40 to 50% including XJC and everyone listed their cars. I have been hunting for a XJC for some 12+ months and Mr. White plus another 6 or 7 came onto the market (which is a lot for a model with only 1100 sold into the Australian market). Brett listed Mr. White for $59,990 on Car sales and eBay with the average more like $65 to $75k. I offered Brett $45k numerous times on eBay only to be rejected (bad call Brett) but at the time people thought $60k was more the number even though nothing was selling. So, let us get to Mr. White and some of the issues Brett has raised in his video. Dent in the boot, you have said that mobile dent guy could remove it for $150 simple fix so why have you not done this? Rust, we all know that rust is never just skin deep and that for a classic car is something that should be address asap to ensure the cancer does not run deeper. Once again you said quick fixed or is it something a lot more serious for a car know for rust issues in that area, but once again done and all detract from the car. There was no mention that the driver’s door was droopy and not closing properly. There was no mention that the rear bumper was slightly pushed into the body work. There was no mention about the windows not working. As Brett has outline, he has spent some money on the interior of the car, the dash and gauges are in excellent condition but the balance of the interior is the real weakness of the car. The seats are crushed velour and whilst in good condition are not leather and not nice. The centre console is untidy and all out of alinement and as Brett as indicated the roof lining really brings the car down as it is sagging, torn and has a cigarette hole in it. When I went to look at the car Brett was asking for $49,990 and at the time, I had been offered an Australian delivered 1976 XJC with matching number engine etc. with all paper work. I even has the luxury of my panel beater to fully go over the car inside and out including removing door trims etc. to ensure rust fee, for $30k which I bought. If you look at the market there is an ugly brown XJC which has rusty bumpers and door seals hanging down started at $75k now offered for $49k and will not sell. Across the board all classic cars are down 20 to 25% and are not selling, there was even a E type Roadster RHD in Facebook for $110k (unheard of). In saying all the above, Brett’s now has the car listed at $39k and this is a good honest car for the price and the best car on the market at the moment and I have seen a few. To be honest if I was still in the market, I would have made a deal with Brett. As everyone has said it is a 50-year-old car but that does not mean we have to accept untidy car which with a small amount of effort can look a lot better especially when the starting asking price is $60k and buyers are so few and far between.

At the end of the day, if the car hasn't sold after 4 months and 4 price reductions (not to mention that you were the only person even willing to view the car in person), then it's overpriced for the market at that time. I feel like Brett wants his viewers to validate his opinion, when the market is already telling him everything he needs to know so he can plan his next move wisely. And while minor imperfections may not bother some people, I agree that sellers should put a little more effort into making their photos, ads, and items stand out (especially in that price range). Although, a slack seller provides insight & opportunity when I'm buying, and yields a higher & quicker sale when I'm selling...so I'm happy they exist. I will add that if you want to see what can be hiding under a pretty paint job, just watch Harry's Garage (Jaguar XJC and Lancia Zagato). I'm not saying that Mr. White (or Brett) is hiding anything, but when you're contemplating paying 10's of thousands of dollars for a vintage vehicle, you have the right to be picky.

You are not alone, Its not just Oz, thats feeling the pinch with regard to classic cars. I am in Blighty, and have an X350 that Ive owned for 17 years, just cost me 4k GBP to sort out some bits and bobs, but thats probably more than i could sell it for, I also I have a mk2 240 1969 in white, paid 16k GBP for it 8 years ago, probably worth less than half that now. none of them would sell at the minute, to put the cherry on the Cake I have a Range Rover L405 which has cost me upwards of 70k GBP and I couldn't give that away at the minute. Best thing to do is Buy more cars whilst they are going for a song hahahahahaha Great Channel

The market for these cars is up against it for several reasons. The amount of spare cash sloshing around is down, the price of fuel is up and the number of people who can relate to and are interested in 50 year old jags is getting less with every passing day.

These gorgeous XJC `s always look better when the roof black vinyl is removed, ( Black vinyl roofs were on everything in the seventees! ) no matter what the paint colour. The velour beige interior is more family comfort than snazzy red leather. These are just a few of this car`s weakness`s. But all the potential to be a proper cool Jag XJC. Hope it finds a good home who knows how to put it right. Cheers.

Hi, yes a very familiar story here to in Scotland UK. I've been trying to sell my 1973 Daimler Sovereign for 4 months. I bought it in April 2021 at auction it had been off the road for 30 years. I paid 2.5k for it. Everything was seized on it. Ive got it on the road and it still needs work. The auction I bought it from wanted me to sell it for what I paid for it when it was a basket case. So I said no. But the classic market for Jags here is dire. Nobody is buying at the moment and I'm continuing the restoration. But the market is bleak at present.

Brett I am in SE Aust and bought V12 XJC a few months back - paid about$15K over its value because it was a nice example and was exactly what I wanted spec wise, colour, interior etc - yes I am happy but I have since found a few things as you do. The guy who looked at your car is a nutter and while picked up a lot of things, most are what you would expect in a near 50yo car in almost daily use. I have watched your listing and thought the initial price was a good price to start negotiations - final price is too low. I would get the hood liner fixed and that is about it - I have never liked the velour jag seats but that is personal preference. If it was cost effective to change them I would but it is never going to be cost effective and a buyer may prefer velours - I see kent wheels there, the same as the seats my preference is the Kents but a buyer may prefer the steel wheels. It is a nice car - I would pull it from the market for a few months and readvertise.

You have a good honest car there and an honest seller. Just got to find the right buyer. Those things you pointed out are all pretty minor. If a buyer wants a concours car he should expect to pay a concours price. Question - Do you keep it advertised or hold onto it until the market picks up? Either way I am sure you are not about to give it away….and why should you.

Brett, the car market has only just begun to fall, it's years away from bottoming. It will collapse into the same abyss as the Australian economy will , down 80% , just like Japan did in the 1990s. All asset prices that rose in the bubble over the last 45 years since 1980 will now equally deflate . Cars are for fun , so who cares 😂

For Jag nuts like ourselves, it's always a good time to buy. ! There's a fully sorted mint XJS out there for $10k with my name on it somewhere. Next year, the US needs to find refinancing for $8.5 trillion of its debts, no chance in hell that interest rates will be south of 10% at that time. Our "RENTIER" economy is about to go comatose , so too every asset market .

I'm in Melbourne which has the MOST ridiculous rules on roadworthys.. You only need to do a roady when you buy a car, that means a car can be driving about for 20 or 30 years without a proper looking at. I tried to buy a decent looking series 3 xj6 a few months ago, the guy had owned it for 20 years and serviced the car himself. When he took the car for a roady prior to me buying it the car failed, estimates ranged from $12k to $15k for repairs... This wasn't a bad car, by no means rotten.. The car itself was for sale for $6k. So in the end the guy had to scrap it as it wasnt worth repairing. I'm currently looking to buy a decent 1982 xj6, the owner has done a hell of a lot of work to the car himself.. Dropped and rebuilt all the rear axle (IRS), front suspension work and anything else that needed doing. He took it for a roady and all it needed was four tyres.. But the garages doing the roadys in Victoria are absolute crooks, making huge amounts of cash for failing and repairing the roady cars.. I'm giving the guy $8k for a well sorted Jag, 95,000km , with a roady.. If you look at the absolute ridiculous prices for Jags for sale in Victoria $20-30k which will then require a roady I think I did ok. What do you think. ??

So I think Vic is better, I've lived in both states so first hand experience. I have a 77 xjs and by the time you add, pink slip green slip and rego together I pay $1400 per year for registration. What would it cost me in Victoria? Bet it's cheaper

I've never had that issue with pink slips in NSW, it is only a 5 minute safety check so as long as your wipers/lights/tyres etc are in good working order pink slips should not be an issue. Vic roadworthy system is open to abuse as anything can fail it and it is only done when you are selling.
