Why Can't Anime Cabbages Look Bad?

Фильм және анимация

In last week's video I made reference to a particular cabbage related event. Apparently, some people did not know what I was referencing. Let's fix that.

Knowing there is a specific scene in a specific anime that strongly contributed to the improvement of food in animation is like knowing that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand helped spark a world war. The fact we can trace the lines of consequence back to those specific events is wild.

The man who directed Crescent Love went on to direct Miname-ke, Mitsudomoe, Yuru Yuri, Sabagebu, Kotoura-san, Love Lab, Himouto Umaru-chan, Gabriel Dropout, and UzaMaid. I like to think he made a decade-long string of lavishly-animated shows just to escape the shame of one poorly-drawn cabbage.

It's not just an anime thing, it's a media proliferation effect. I'm old enough to remember the days before cable TV was widespread. Everyone knew what went on in every show on the air, because we had three and a half channels to choose from and they started on re-runs halfway through each season. Even if you hated a given show you'd still wind up hearing enough other people talking about it to grasp events from week to week through pure osmosis. In hindsight it was a damn nightmare, although we never quite realized it at the time. Cable changed all that within a couple of years, and the rise of the modern internet even more so. Thankfully a time long gone, and with today's endless entertainment choices it'll never return. Be thankful if you didn't have to live through it.
