This series follows the build and subsequent ownership, enjoyment, trials and tribulations of owning a Lister Bell Lancia Stratos Replica kit car of the legendary Lancia Stratos Rally Car, winner of the WRC (world Rally Championship) three years running.
Much like the Hawk Cars Stratos replica, the Lister Bell or LB Specialist Cars' Stratos can be bought as a kit, partially built or fully built. My personal decision was for Lister Bell to build a turn key car, building the chassis, bodywork, suspension, brakes and electrics. The engine in my Lister Bell Stratos is the famous Busso 3.0 litre V6 engine, the 12v Alfa Romeo V6, from a 1992 Alfa Romeo 164, putting out just a little over 200bhp which is plenty and was installed by Italian Design & Racing in Mesa, Phoenix, Arizona.
The Lancia Stratos is a legendary sports car produced by Italian car manufacturer Lancia from 1972 to 1974. It was designed by the famous Italian designer Marcello Gandini and built by Bertone. The Stratos was a highly successful rally car, winning the World Rally Championship three times in a row from 1974 to 1976.
The Stratos was powered by a mid-mounted V6 engine, originally sourced from the Ferrari Dino. It had a displacement of 2.4 liters and produced around 190 horsepower. Later versions of the Stratos, known as the Stratos HF, were equipped with a 2.5-liter V6 that produced up to 280 horsepower.
The Stratos was built on a short wheelbase, which gave it excellent handling and agility. The body was made from lightweight materials such as fiberglass and aluminum, and the car had a distinctive wedge shape that was optimized for aerodynamics.
In addition to its racing success, the Lancia Stratos was also known for its unique styling and innovative design. The car's short, wide body and large windshield gave it a futuristic appearance that was ahead of its time.
Overall, the Lancia Stratos is a legendary sports car that has left an indelible mark on the automotive world. Its combination of unique styling, innovative design, and outstanding performance has made it a true icon of the golden age of rally racing.

The Stratos was one of my childhood standout cars - Graham Warner had Cathal Curley at the wheel of his Chequred Flag Stratos in 1975 I think - Second stage out and Cathal hit the Barrack Bridge in Carnhill - That will never leave me - a girl got her camera ripped from her hands and a few spectators fell backwards - Cathal had damaged the bottom balljoint and retired The team later found out that one from a 124 Fiat was the same ! Billy Coleman came back in 1977 and absolutely destroyed the rest of the field - he led from start to finish There is a Hawk replica of Colemans 1977 Chequred Flag Stratos owned by a father and son and it just stirrs up do many emotions in me when I see it. Great times and my love for the Stratos will never wane Well done - your LB is just fabulous

Likewise for me as you know. My Dad actually bought one of his Triumph GT6 from Chequered Flag, in Chiswick as I remember, but I may be wrong it was a long time ago.

Always loved these, since the early ‘70s. When I eventually get my own replica, I’ll try to make it a center single-seater.

It's one of the most beautiful cars ever IMO. And it has more character than I am able to put in words at this moment. Also, I remember watching your "unboxing" video of the Lister Bell. It was almost as exciting as if it were my own! And funny. 🙂

Back in the 90's I was doing a job near Padova ( northern Italy ) The guy I was delivering to had 8 or 9 Stratos's in his workshop, in various states of togetherness. Most of them were his and the rest were customer cars. I offered to buy one but was turned down. He took me round the back of his shed and offered me a D'Tomasa Pantara in bits. But I passed ....Oh to have a time machine. I live in Australia now and neither of them are legal here. Even if they were the import duty is 58 % of what customs thinks their valve is. I know that cause I tried to bring my RS 500 over with me and was told they wanted AU$ 25.000 import duty for my own car.

2:05 "anyway enough about Fiat, why the Stratos? - is the question." I take it you mean - you sold the X1/9 because you always wanted a Stratos, or a proper copy of one? I could never afford a proper copy of a Stratos let alone a real one so I didn't have either to sell, I had to settle for an X1/9 and work from there 🥴 I did a lot of research over a period of 2 years starting with looking at the build specs for period factory modified (homologated) production cars that were closely related. Interestingly, there are 4 closely related production cars designed by Grupo Fiat that were factory modified or modified by associates /subsidiaries in period, eligible to compete and built to similar specs - 1. Lancia Stratos Group 5 2. Lancia Montecarlo Group 5 3. Ferrari 308 GT4LM Group 5 4. Dallara Icsunonove Group 5 The Dallara Icsunonove had a small capacity 16V N/A motor making about 210 bhp, weighed around 725 kg. Group 5 exterior bodywork defines the group broadly as silhouette racers, only need resemble the production version from the side. Generically all are modified production cars therefore must retain the original block or a production derivative of the original block to be eligible to compete as such today. Therefore the development of these cars continues to this day. I don't follow the current rankings for the larger capacity or turbocharged cars in the group, I'm only following the X1/9 because it runs in the 2-litre N/A class which tends to be cheaper 4-cylinder cars, possibly affordable 🤣 Last year a modified Dallara Icsunonove driven by Gianluca Ticci, won the 2-litre NA class in the European Hillclimb & Slalom Championship, running an Alfa Romeo D2 motor making around 290bhp weighing 625kg. I think although the cars in this group don't compete in the same class, the Stratos and the Icsunonove would be head to head. The decision to develop the Stratos as a purpose built rally weapon from the get-go, was entirely political and involved some rule-bending at least to get the Stratos classified as a production car when it was technically, not really. On paper at least, the X1/9 was at least as good if not better, but the Stratos exists. So really it's the best of both worlds in that both exist, and the best of four worlds in that all four exist. 👍👍👍👍

Well that's a good question and dependent on so many factors in terms of spec. For up to date pricing you would have to talk directly to Lister Bell as I'm sure materials etc. have increased in price since my build. For the entire build, again it depends on so many factors, which motor, ECU, whether you rebuild the motor, whether you do the work yourself or have a shop do it.

Is 50k € a good ballpark figure? Including Materials, paint job, motor, gear box, tires, registration etc. Excluding work hours.
