Why Britain's election won't end the political chaos

Britons are heading to the polls for the fourth time in five years. How has Britain gone from having one of the most stable political systems in the world to being derided as a political basket-case-and why won't the chaos end anytime soon? Read more here: econ.st/35fzgSL

Britain, a land of green pastures, tea drinking and centuries of political stability until now. The British people are heading to the polls for the fourth time in five years to try to break the deadlock over how to leave the European Union. But this election is unlikely to heal Britain’s divided politics.
Before the Brexit referendum, Britain had enjoyed decades of relative political stability with one of the Conservatives or Labour almost always in power. But their success was built on increasingly shaky foundations. One study found that British voters’ trust in government suffered a long decline from 1986 until 2012. And two events in particular became emblematic of that loss of trust.
And then a few years later the elite appeared to be proven wrong again. The financial crisis of 2008 challenged the competence of Britain’s ruling class.
These two events began to undermine the political centre on which both Labour’s Tony Blair and the Conservatives' David Cameron had built their success. The collapse in trust in this elite then gave way to active revolt. The election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party signalled a rejection of the ruling consensus and a decisive shift to the left. Then in 2016 the public had their opportunity to turn on the establishment.
Within three years Boris Johnson one of the faces of the Leave campaign was leader of a Conservative Party that had shifted clearly to the right. If Labour were to defy expectations and take power the party’s economic policies alone would have profound consequences. If neither party ends up with a working majority they’re going to find it harder than ever to form alliances in Parliament now they’ve vacated the centre ground.
Such a coalition would legislate for a second Brexit referendum. A solid Conservative victory would spare the country from this fate. But don’t expect Boris Johnson’s promise to “get Brexit done” to spell an end to chaos either. And Brexit could mark the start, not the end of the country’s constitutional turmoil. For Scotland who voted to stay in the EU another independence vote is already on the cards.
Whatever the outcome of the election there’s another reason why neither of Britain’s potential prime ministers will end the chaos. Don’t expect their answers to change any time soon in part because neither party is likely to return to the political centre any time soon. Britain could face a future swinging between very right-wing and left-wing governments. And with no end in sight to the political chaos.

The blue wall crumbled for democrats as poor whites either didn't turn out for democrats or switched to republicans. The same thing happened with labour's red wall. I mean even if you combined SNP and Labour, that would still be a net loss of 47 seats compared to the last time. It's not a surprise as we already saw that happening previously.

@@djsega4289 Mass immigration of low skilled workers has an effect. But there are countries without it and where the workforce has actually contracted but wages have still stagnated eg. Japan. I'd predict that even if we controlled immigration of low skilled workers, wages wouldn't increase that much. There's automation and outsourcing. For wages to rise would require some protectionist policies and either stronger unions or government bargaining for higher wages in each sector like is done in Australia. I can't see those happening in a post-Bexit UK. A strong left wing Labour party isn't likely to win, especially not after Scotland goes independent, more working class run over to Conservative and the new Conservative government redraws boundaries to suit them.

I disagree. Look, the video says that working class wages are stagnating - but then it implies that Corbin's promise to improve workers rights, regulate the financial sector and stamp out tax avoidance is somehow not going to be of any help with this issue. In fact, according to the video, we are supposed to believe that the measures proposed by Labour, measures that are designed to combat the very problems that got us into this terrible economic situation - such as income inequality and market speculation - these measures are somehow just as bad as the complete meltdown of the system that the Tories plan to implement by completely deregulating everything and selling their votes to the highest bidding lobbyists. This is a completely false equivalence. Labor and Tory are not both equally bad - that's what the right wing populists want you to believe, as they continue to sell out your country from underneath you. But don't fall for their narrative - your choice DOES matter!

"...a Conservative Party that had shifted clearly to the Right" The failure to understand that Brexit cut across all political positions is a fundamental error of commentators and many politicians alike. Generational Labour voters in the industrial heartlands did not overnight become supporters of a 'far right' Conservative Party - they voted for Brexit. Johnson's clearing out of the Remainers from the Party was not a 'move to the Right' - it simply removed any doubt from the electorate that voting Conservative would indeed see the Referendum result enacted. The Labour Party's failure to exorcise the division in it's own ranks and thereby take a clear position on Brexit directly led to the historic wipe-out for the Party.

DanM194 I agree with you that politics isn’t broken. As Anand Menon pointed out quite insightfully: the last parliament was just reflecting the country in its disagreement on 1) whether they wanted to remain or leave and 2) in case of leave, what way to leave (deal or no deal; what type of deal). The people have now sorted out their own disagreement in the last election by the 52% Leave-voters clearly stating: “whatever Brexit Boris wants”. That gets reflected in the new parliament and thus democracy is perfectly at work. On “Democracy under threat”: I didn’t pick that statement up - at what point of the video is that said?

So the video says that working class wages are stagnating - but than it implies that Corbin's promise to improve workers rights, regulate the financial sector and stamp out tax avoidance is somehow not going to be of any help with this issue. That is not the wishes of even a bare majority of the populace. After Brexit, or even during a lot could change and the working class could revolt as they get squeezed further - we've seen this in other places. If they still work within the system that is fine but we've seen people lose trust in the system and cause chaos outside the system.
