Your criticism of the music confuses me. It is intentionally simple and subtle much of the time. The soft piano tracks that play in the overworld keep you in a calm state of mind while exploring the lonely landscape and also bring a sense of melancholy fitting for a ruined world. When you go into populated towns, more obvious music comes to the forefront and all of those tracks are bursting with the personality of their respective towns. Likewise, battles bring tracks ranging from upbeat (e.g. typical bokoblins) to very epic (e.g. Ganon). I believe the music is very well utilized considering how the music is used to facilitate the various themes of the game at different times. And must I mention the Hyrule Castle theme...?

I think most western are not family with this style of using subtle/no soundtrack. I will take Ghibli movies (which this game take inspiration from a lot) for example, in the original version, there are a lot of scene with no soundtrack, just sound of wind blowing through the grass/hill/etc., but when it was localized, Ghibli add some soundtrack on those scene because western are so used to hearing music all the time.

As awesome as this game is, and as often as I play it, I think it's my least favorite soundtrack in a video game. I will admit that the Hyrule Castle theme music is awesome, though. Just not a big fan of the other music in the game.

@@LeshenLord Not in every video game ever. Obviously only in video games I've played since the mid '80s. Being almost 4 decades that's a lot of videogames, but it's unreasonable to say every video game ever and I'm not even implying that. 🤦🏼‍♂️ It's not a very unreasonable stance to take. My personal opinion doesn't need to be highly offensive to you. It's subjective and it's an opinion. It's not wrong because it's my opinion. It's wrong if I say it should apply to anyone else. So, no, it's not overly dramatic. I feel you are projecting your reaction to my opinion. Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite video games ever, so I don't think it's such a huge deal that I'm not amazed by the soundtrack. I'm not saying it's bad, but it doesn't really captivate me except for the Hyrule Castle theme. All that is perfectly okay and not in the least bit dramatic because it doesn't detract from such an awesome game.

I strongly disagree with your point about the music. This game takes place after defeat, the whole feeling of the game is one that is lonely, sad and melancholic, and the subtle, broken piano notes mixed in with ambient sounds of a recovering world suit this absolutely perfectly. And then, once you enter towns and villages, you are greeted with tracks that are full of personality that reflects the origins and stories of their respective locations. I might also mention how absolutely fantastic the music is in Tarrey Town, Hyrule Castle and, my personal favourite, Rito Village. Not to mention the champions themes, the games opening score and ESPECIALLY the trailer theme which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. In my opinion, the sound track for breath of the wild is an absolute masterpiece and an extremely intelligent utilisation of music theory within the setting.

Majora's Mask was set in a world 3 days from total destruction, yet you didn't hear despair music in termina field. You heard a rocking upbeat track. Ocarina of time had that same event where ganon took over hyrule and cursed it, yet it still had the same lovable dynamic hyrule field theme you heard as a child. I also didn't hear melancholy or sadness in breath of the wild's theme, I heard music expressed with the subtitle of the game, the breath of the wild, the music of the game expressed that it wanted you to get a feel of the less artificial side of hyrule now with hylian civilization being brought to a primitive state. I can't say I like the soundtrack, though, especially the battle themes which consist of whacky primitive tribal instruments mixed in with modern ones.

I wish more people understood the purpose of the game having less music and having more subdued, softer tones. The new Hyrule is mostly in ruins. It's empty and barren. The devs wanted you to feel like link. Lost in a big world with no memories. A world overtaken by nature and evil. Fun/bombastic music plays when you're in towns, castle, or when fighting, etc. But for the most part, only the sound of nature or a soft melody on a piano is being played. The music choice or even the lack thereof is by design. It may not be to everyone's taste but you should at least know their reasoning. Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity has all the crazy and fun music because it fits the theme. Maybe even the next Zelda game will have more epic and louder music depending on the tone that devs are going for.

Breath of the wild was the first Zelda game I've ever played. Now it's easily one of my favourite games of all time. There's so much to do, the art style is stunning, the combat and story is engaging but leaves room for you to play your own way, and the breaking tools mechanic keeps you on your toes. It's the first time a twist in a game has got me, when the old man is revealed as a ghost. And I just keep coming back to it, even if its just to ride around or explore for an hour or two. Also the way new mechanics are aren't babied to you, like shield surfing, I didn't know about it until I met the woman in the snowy mountains, and the sense of reward from that, and then finding the dragons I just though wow, I just didn't know they existed, and they look stunning. It's an easy top 3.

Bought my Switch at the same time as you and BOTW was my primary influence. Playstation has been my primary console for years, and is what I use for everything that is cross-platform. I really only use my Xbox & Switch for exclusives. Anyways, BOTW is absolutely amazing. Dove in and was completely enthralled with the entire experience. It lived up to the hype, as expected. I've never really been into Zelda before BOTW, as it never really clicked for me,, and now I'm playing through Ocarina, Majora, and others. Agree! They built in old themes so subtle in the soundtrack that sometimes it’s hard to notice, but the way they use older themes always makes sense to the place/situation it occurs.. for example the contrast of Hyrule Castle exterior/interior. Sometimes u just pick up on some notes of themes you’ve known from older games and it justs boosts the excitement so much. It’s a masterpiece of a soundtrack and just fitting for the type of game botw is

U know, I started playing this recently and my experience was very similar to your first experience (underwhelming). I’ve been wondering for years, what the rave is about this game, and after playing it a bit, o walked away like, “yeah, I dog get it”. That said, I knew that there had to be something more to it. This video has given me additional insight into what many believe is the greatness of this game, and for that reason, it’ll get another try from me. It’s the least that I can do considering that I have a copy on the switch and the Wii U. Looking forward to the experience! Thanks again!

Your description of your experience discovering Zelda perfectly mirrors my own when I discovered Twilight Princess! Mind you I grew up on Nintendo, from the very start. I'm an O.G. 80's NES baby. Super Mario Brothers is lifeblood to me. But I could never get the appeal of Zelda games, even after I introduced my sons to the GameCube and they fell in love with Ocarina of Time. I bought Twilight Princess for them and decided to give it a try for myself. I was initially unimpressed but then something just snapped into place and I was hooked!

The real magic of this game is that it can be experienced on your own way and most things can be solved in several ways. You put the examples of the bridge of logs and the spikes and elixirs, I have never thought of that, and I have also saw people solve it in different ways, and it always amuse me how everyone comes from a different context on how to solve things even in the shrines and the game simply lets you do that. It constantly rewards your mind and your own cleverness.

(This comment contains botw spoilers) I disagree with you on the music part. I promise you the music is there, it just easy to miss. You said there are only ”piano tracks here and there” and that’s true but there’s so much more. In Link’s memories, boss battles (both mini bosses and blights, attack on the divine beasts, caves, dungeons (in the divine beasts) and so much more! It’s just easy to miss because it fits in so well within the world overall. The fact that there’s only a piano is playing in the hyrule field is to remind you how lonely you are, how hyrule nearly got destroyed a century ago and everyone you ever known tragically died (and you can barely remember them). My favorite track is the final boss battle against dark beast ganon. You should listen more closely when you play the game next time and you will hear it. I’m not hating, just sharing my thoughts. Great video btw, I agreed with everything else you said.

At least as far as the horses go, my impression is you can train them to be better behaved but can't actually improve their inherent stats short of putting the Sheikah saddle on them. But now that you mention it, being able to "level up" your horse through training would have been awesome and exactly what BotW's horse mechanic needed. Maybe it'd give a better reason for those frustrating horse riding minigames too.

You make me feel so old. I played Ocarina of Time then Majora’s Mask, countless hours on the N64, from 8 to 12-13 years old. Those were real master pieces for the time. One of the first real open world. I stopped playing when I switch to XBox in 2001 or 2002, so I skipped the GameCube/Wii/DS phases of the game so I can’t tell for the other games, but the N64 ones left a deep impression on me and my friends. A generational defining game I would argue (literally everybody played it). Now I’m 32 years old and when I started playing BOTW, it all came back to me. You can really feel the inspiration of Ocarina of Time in the puzzles, the fighting, the exploration, the sense of freedom that comes from a non-linear story. If you ever find a N64 with Ocarina of Time, crack open a cold one and enjoy yourself. You’ll see that Zelda is like a fine wine. It’s a very good recipe that just keeps on getting better with age. It’s actually funny to see you discovering Zelda the way it is, like it’s a novelty, when in fact it has always been that way for thirty years. Open world, non linear story, lots of puzzles were always Zelda’s trademarks. Glad you enjoyed it!

I agree with every point you made except the end (defeating Ganon). I found more satisfaction defeating each divine beast individually than I did defeating Ganon. You kill him, this form, that form, final form, and boom. He's dead. No one cares. Castle: still taken over, still there, still can beat him again for some reason? There is no mission completed, no box checked, just a "congrats you did it". I had never played a Zelda game in my life before I played this one but I had an absolute blast. I always describe it as Nintendo's Skyrim, just with better combat and more "Nintendo-y" everything else.

Even though I like this game, I feel that it's really lacking a lot of what made the previous Zelda titles so good. I can see that they put in a lot of effort into making the open world feel as real as possible, but it seems to have come at a cost. My specific issue with the game is the lack of proper dungeons, and as much as many people want to, it cannot be overlooked. The game seems to get most other things right, though that's not to say there is no room for improvement. I enjoyed dressing up as a 'vai' to get into the Gerudo settlement, for example, as well as sneaking into the Yiga hideout; those were both very reminiscent of the kind of stuff you would do in old school Zelda quest's in between dungeons, and this game carried the tradition perfectly. I literally can't get over how empty the game feels without the dungeons though, which used to be the main focal points of any Zelda game. The Legendary Beasts or whatever are no substitute for it and neither are the shrines. I personally really dislike them seeing as they all look the same and are very repetitive. It's like you are continuously being torn out of playing Zelda in order to solve some puzzles that are better acclimated for a Portal game. I guess it's not the fact that they are there which annoys me the most, but rather what they are supposed to be replacing. There are still many places in this new Hyrule that feel like a proper Zelda game such as Hyrule Castle and climbing up Death Mountain, but a lot of Hyrule feels empty as well... kind of like a randomly generated minecraft map, you can really tell which areas got attention from humans and which were just pieced together later with the help of AI. At least I can. That being said, I am still hopeful that the next Zelda titles will manage to incorporate both the open-world features of this game as well as manage to fill out the world more properly like they did back in the old days. I get that the old maps were much smaller and it was easier to do so, but they really have to try harder in this regard. I also get that the whole concept of this game is that Hyrule is almost in a sort of post-apocalyptic state but it makes me wonder... did they choose to go with this storyline because it's really the easiest way to make the vast emptiness of much of Hyrule make sense? It would definitely be a lot more difficult if they had to fill it out properly with a lot of dynamic characters like they did in the past. I also hope that they adjust the way weapons work in the game... the current system can be applied to basic weapons but certain things should still be discoverable via the old way. I remember how awesome it felt to get fire, ice or light arrows for the first time in Ocarina, and that feeling just isn't replicated in BOTW where every item is treated the same way it would be in any other RPG. Bring back the dungeons and bring back the focus on unique items, don't try turning Zelda into World of Warcraft or Red Dead Redemption.

But the lack of proper dungeons and a more fleshed out story hindered the experience for me personally. I found that beating it was... kind of a hollow sensation. But i still kept playing it lol, doing more side quest stuff and exploring. I hope with the sequel they do more with the world, fill it out more now that the calamity is over, add more villages, things to see and do etc... add in proper dungeons and story and WHAMO. Best game ever.

The reason the horses are so good is because they had one guy spend the entire development working on horses (and the other animals). His work really paid off! I personally really love the soundtrack. It’s probably my favorite Zelda soundtrack to this day. I think the subtle notes just make it all the more immersive. And the fact that certain areas such as towns have distinct themes sets them apart from the vast broken world you explore. There are also a ton of musical Easter eggs hidden in the soundtrack as well such as the song of time and Zelda’s lullaby. But hey this is just my opinion, and I can respect that other people didn’t like the subtle nature of Botw’s music.
