Why Boycott Hogwarts Legacy? The Battle for Escapism

G'day guys - so you might've seen all the controversy surrounding the release of Hogwarts Legacy ... but what was it all about? Why are people so mad at J.K Rowling? Was J.K Rowling involved in Hogwarts Legacy? Why did the Boycott fail?
In this video I explore the Boycott Battle that was waged in the lead up to Hogwarts Legacy's release and try to make sense of it for you.
Be advised, this might might be a bit spicier than the average pinch of salt, given the stakeholders that fought in the battle and some of the tactics that were used ... you have been warned.

To be honest, I never saw the real issue here, Boycoting the game did nothing to hurt Rowling, she already had her money, all a boycot was going to do was hurt the company and the staff who worked for it. And at the end of the day, she has a right to her opinion, sometimes people with a certain level of platform and status should think very hard and twice about sharing it on said platform, but they absolutely have a right to have that opinion. The great thing about opinions though, is that you don't actually have to listen to them, that's also a right you have as a human. The "well actually" crowd would do well to remember the "think twice" statement I made earlier. Having said that though, as a gay man (I grew up in the 80's and 90's when the struggle was very real, kids today should show more respect for that in this humble kiwi's opinion!) I am often appalled at how my "community" has developed in recent years, what's the phrase? "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become the villain!" I truly believe that is what we are seeing here. Back in my day there was only LGB, because that was all we needed, with everyone fitting nicely into one of tyhose categories. Gender wasn't an issue, it was who you loved that counted! Now theres all manner of extra baggage involved by elements so desperate for validation that they are gloming onto our struggle and coopting it into something very dark. The sad thing about that, is it's often the "allies" more than anyone else, who show the biggest outrage, out of some show of righteousness, because people today need to be offended I guess? But it tars us all with the same brush and that makes me very sad, for myself and for humanity as a whole, can we seriously not all just get along, have we not all evolved to that point yet? Sometimes I yearn for a much simpler time. Having said all that, I've only just found your channel, but I am thoroughly enjoying it. Keep at it mate.

The "transphobic" label is a joke anyway, they consider you a transphobe if you disagree with the simplest things. If 10 years ago you were cool with trans people you were liberal, if you are cool with trans people now but you don't agree that they are 100% the sex they identify as, you are a transphobe and that makes you everything else in their eyes as well. So you are now also right wing, conservative, alt right, n*zi, sexist and all that good stuff. You litterally become the enemy and all your other views don't matter at all anymore. This is where the cult comparison comes from, you get shunned by them for not being 100% into the faith. And if you look up all the characteristics of a cult it is scary how close these people resemble it, it isn't just a joke any more it became reality.

Given how the forth book explains how one of the villains escaped prison by using the Polyjuice potion to switch places with his mother. And like, she later died in prison and he suffers a fate worse than death via Dementor Kiss at the end of the book. But then I'm also reminded of the fifth book and how Umbridge tries to ban an interview Harry gave and it all but guarantees that everyone reads it. I was unaware of the reaction around Robbie Coltrane. Well it was a good thing. His passing hurt so I don't know how I'd have reacted if I saw that.

Read the Lord of the Rings and come to understand why the Rings of Power are the equivalent of fan art made by a chimp smearing his feces on paper! There's lots of options! Hell, almost everyone watching this video's literate. Write your own book! I have! I'm working on the fifth one now. You can do it! Any way, I had a lot of fun with Hogwarts Legacy. As did my wife. We're both hoping they come back with a more feature complete game in the near future. (Quidditch. More spells. I’ve seen nothing from the ostensible “other side” that even comes close to the viciousness, callousness, and outright immorality evinced by the far left. That sentiment really extends outward from the controversy over this game to… well, everything, really. Call me biased, but if you wanted to sell that statement, you ought to have included something from the “other side” (I hate speaking in terms like this for a multitude of reasons) that came anywhere near celebrating Robbie Coltrane’s death because he had the “wrong” opinions. As for separating the art from the artist, I listen to Varg Vikernes’ music. Not only is he an unrepentant murderer, he is a literal neo-Nazi. I feel absolutely zero internal moral conflict when listening to his records. It strikes me as weird as hell that some people apparently need the producers of the art they enjoy to be in total lockstep with them ideologically. Not that I am comparing Rowling to a neo-Nazi. She is pretty much right on in her assessment of the religion of LGBTQIAAP2+ (and I say this as a bisexual man who vomits blood at the idea of being considered part of that toxic and wholly politically driven “community”). The problem is, I wish she would realise how much her own ideology had to do with CREATING the conditions for her to have found herself in the position she is in. It was feminism (and Marxism generally) that worked so hard to flatten the difference between men and women, to the point of obliterating it. How can she be surprised to find men wanting in on her victimhood narrative..?

You go on to pretend that JK is just a sort of innocent victim in the battle for truth and honesty- just a lady trying to express herself and use words that mean what words mean… ignoring that she’s also gone out of her way to align with and repeat/retweet a number of prominent and active TERFS- people who regularly proselytize some horrible **** about trans people. She has allied and armored herself with a number of these vile types, and repeated numerous talking points of theirs, and has *continued to do so*. It doesn't, but easy modes aren't free to add, and they definitely aren't as simple to put in as some people make them out to be. Also a lot of the pushback is because a bunch of people stormed in and started DEMANDING that they had a RIGHT to a mode they could play, arguing that the game doesn't respect them as people because it asks them to devote time and effort to understanding it. I have no issue with it if the devs want to add an easy mode. I do take issue with people acting like they're somehow entitled to have one made for them. If you don't like the game, you can play a different game, there are a lot of them out there.

while i do agree that you arent a bad person for playing a video game and they kinda went pretty hard on the hate. but like the thing is, is that some people just cant escape into a video game. some people deal with sexism within those games, be it design, or players within those games. it would be pretty hard to escape into a game but theres no option for your skin color. look, if you know the harm that JK does, play it. i dont really care.

Why should skin color even matter if you're just trying to escape into the life of someone else? What you're talking about is a character customization issue not something like racism or whatever. That just more sounds like you want to inject yourself into a video game.

Who deals with sexism within a game, some things just aren't that deep. I also don't get why it's always women who cry about it, they see a really good looking girl in sexy clothes and they cry sexism. A dude sees characters like kratos who are roided up to no end or your generic testosterone overdosed barbarian and we cheer for them and they become favorites. It's mostly the ones who don't even play games to begin with seeing how my ex loved Lara croft and my current GF went so far to have a bayonetta tattoo while my sister cosplays 2B every chance she gets. You guys don't even realize that you fight for a minority who would never go for the hobby even if you listen to every single one of their outbursts. You just have to look how things go everytime, woke games always end up underperforming and now we also saw how it goes when all the people who they try to include don't buy a game, it hardly did anything, maybe even ramped the numbers up. The simple fact is that they don't matter in this community, they storm in, demand everything, ruin it for everyone and no one ends up buying it because the product just turns into garbage.

Glad you agree - and I understand some people can’t / don’t use video games for their escapism. As for the rest of your comment, I’m a bit unsure as to your point.

speaking as an arab, your entire comment sounds like alot of professional self victimizing. i use gaming as a destresser and a method of escape jus fine, i dont need the same gender or skin color to relate to someone in a story, and the ppl that do need some self reflection. " look, if you know the harm that JK does, play it. i dont really care." what harm exactly? could u explain? all she did was speak her opinion about trans ppl online, she has a right to her opinion, and the ppl that pretend to be harmed by her opinion online and act like victims (a laughable delusion at best) should just go or play somewhere else? whats hilarious is theres a freakin trans person in the freakin game XD the world of art and entertainment isnt made to cater to your individual feelings. get over it my friend. stop thinking everyone is a victim and live life.

The game sucked anyways LOL 😅 4GB update? Not even close. I installed Hogwarts Legacy off the disk, then hooked up the internet, and was greeted with a 100GB update to a brand new game. And as I said earlier, the game was garbage anyways. Such a massive waste.

There is no such thing as "installing off the disk" anymore. ALL video games are digital these days. The disk is literally just a cd key to prove you actually own it.

@@failedGraphics That’s not true mate. My internet is terrible, so what I do now when I have a new game is turn the internet off entirely, put in the new disk, which starts the installation off the disk. Once complete, I can play to my hearts content so long as I don’t turn the internet back on, because that will prompt an update. If the internet is on when I put in I new disk, then it will bias the internet download rather than the disk which in my case takes about 10-20x longer. The file size is the same. Perhaps what you mean it is there is no longer such a thing as *playing* off a disk, which is true

@@failedGraphics I can make a guess what is going on. This has to be a console gamer, either series X or thiccest PS5, those are the only ones with a disc drive. Sounds "weird" that a physical release has the game on disc, nice. Now i have to make guesses about that "internet" and the download size.... If it's a Soyny, then your internet speed doesn't matter and downloading anything from Soyny takes 5-10x longer but that 100gig size is propably the size of the whole game after patching. Games on console take long ass time to download but you can just let it install overnight or while you are at work. technology illiterate people do weird things.

That Tess Fowler bird seems to the one who's more hateful tbh.. She was probably experiencing her "Person Who Was Menstruating" time of the month when she wrote those Tweets though, based on how irritable she sounds. 😉
