So once you make it, you know there's 1,000 guys trying to take your job every year. There are a ton of demands on their time, and they are still human.

I took my GODSON to a basketball training clinic for young teenagers in February 2023. The Coach had the kids doing these drills where they had to pivot and spin to the basket, he was relentless about footwork, for about 1hour I sat there like "damn, I played basketball everyday in the neighborhood most summers in the 1990's, this stuff ain't no joke"!

It’s one of the most difficult things in the world to achieve, there is quite literally a barrier to entry just off height, so that eliminates 90% of population, then you take into account the fact there is only 400 players out of billions of people, it’s nearly impossible to make it, you have to survive injuries, and beat out competition, and naturally have height by default. It’s incredibly rare, which is why I respect those who make it, and got no respect for those who take it for granted, like bums like Ben simmons

  • @crisgonzalez3757

it’s really not if you have the height, since that knocks out 90% of the competition. trying to make it as a world class soccer player in one of Europe’s top 5 leagues makes getting into the nba look like a side mission. since you aren’t easily disposable in the nba if you start dropping your performances since lack of competition for your spot and only a couple ways to get into the league.

I played baseball up to college and I played basketball and football along the way…I tell my kids to this day that basketball is the most difficult sport in the world to make it professional. There’s only 12 players. You absolutely have to hit the genetic lottery in unique ways and stay healthy and be hyper-competitive and be hyper-devoted and have character. I grew up in Chicago with some freak athletes but so many just had crazy lives. I heard personal stories about certain “stars” and knew they couldn’t play at a high level.

  • @spenser6353

There are some nba players that didn’t hit the genetic lottery. John Stockton and Steve Nash weren’t big or fast. Some guys can make it because of skill or being a specialist at shooting. But for the most part most nba players are athletic freaks

Even things you enjoy you can complain about. things you hate especially you can complain about. if people are telling you you're just complaining, guess what you have a right to and at the end of the day it's going to make you feel better. It's not like we're quitting and giving up it's just nice to talk about how hard it is sometimes without being treated like you're weak or otherwise.

I've always thought about this. Its a 82 game season + playoffs. They are literally playing every other day. During their days off, they are travelling/practicing/rehabbing. If they are a star player, you get added responsibility of talking to media after every game. They don't have the weekend to look forward to like the rest of us folks. With whatever "free" time they have, the pressure of social media is around, so they gotta be careful with what they do in public, or who might be filming them. These dudes might have the fame and all the money, but with it comes a completely different life with its own set of problems. Mad respect for the hoopers out there.
