Pedri, at just 20 years old, is already one of the best midfielders in the world. And it’s no surprise that Barcelona have become pretty reliant on his incredible quality and versatility. But have they become too reliant on him?
The stats suggest an astonishing dip in performance when Pedri is not on the pitch. So in this video, I try to explain the many reasons why this 20-year-old is the heartbeat of such an illustrious club. Using data and analysing his performance.

If anything Pedri is the most Xavi like character in the team Xavi also used to dictate play. Now Pedri might not be similar or as good, but he does play that role and because we lack Iniesta/Messi type players. We now see the benefit of a player like Pedri

@@dr_ubo Pedri has traits like elite players of the past. But I think he is more a mixture of Zidane-Xavi-Iniesta. Pedri doesn't have the pace as Iniesta, so he relies on his excellent first touch to resist pressing. This trait is like Zidane. The other traits are much discussed so I don't repeat them.

Pedri is half the reason why we're able to witness unleashed Dembele. The pausa attracts opposition press and thereforce since dembele operates in wider space, is left unmarked. And pedri then releases an unreal long ball to use Dembele's abilities to their best. The press resistance in opposition half is one aspect barca lacks a lot without pedri.

The one thing Barca got really right against RM today and were lacking in the most against United was their intensity and fight to win the second ball and get it out of Real’s counter press. This is a really important aspect in the modern game imo that doesn’t really come into the tactics picture. At the end of the day, it is a team sport and that togetherness and rallying can help come through even with a significantly depleted squad. The midfield and defense was on fire today and their confidence with carrying the ball out of the back with those quick passes was just majestic to watch - that was Barcelona- the movement of the ball was so quick with those combinations - even though they didn’t create a lot of clear chances, it felt dominant. And they should have def scored the second, don’t know what Fati was doing there!

I have always thought that after Messi's departure, we won’t be able to experience beautiful moments of individual brilliance but never have I thought that Pedri would change that so soon. Whenever he is with the ball, he can pull of magic at any time and he usually does in every match. So, comforting for supporters, teammates and coach alike to have Pedri on the field because of their ease and comfort with the ball given our way of playing. Regardless of his importance and value to the team, he should not be overplayed and rested whenever possible. This time we might have overplayed him and now he is injured.

I think this not only enables the team to progress the ball more fluidly and quickly, but also makes everyone else on the field more confident of getting out of tough situations and playing at their highest level. Brilliant video. The one additional aspect of his game potentially worth discussing is his defensive ability. He doesn’t challenge incessantly like Gavi or have the physical tools of Araujo but his defensive positioning, reading of the game, ball recovery and press resistance after winning the ball back are incomparable. As much as we suffer from a lack of creativity and progression offensively without Pedri, his absence in defence costs as significantly in transition and puts far more pressure on the back line.

The technical analysis you just made is quite on point and also gives perspective to what Barca's future recruitment goal should be;Getting a foil for Pedri.....not necessarily like for like, but someone as dynamic.....I have always had this yearning that as important as Pedri is that could be a pitfall to the potentials of this Barca team.overplaying him on regular can leave him susceptible to aftermath of wear and tear, and when he is not in the squad the cracks beginning to show. He needs someone to take a bit of the burden. I would recommend that guy from las Palma's (moliero). His skill set is quite similar although not on the same level as Pedri, but he's got the potential to reach those heights.on the other hand they could also put their trust in Pablo Torre and give him more game time. That way he eases his way gradually into the team and when fully adapted may give a different attacking/creative profile to the team which can make the team even less predictable and more dangerous.

The most surprising thing that i know after pedri get the injury is how he is so important our possession keeping After his injury we completely lost our possession And adding on top of that we have busi, dejon, gavi and yes we can't keep the possession without him I don't know how it is possible but now its happening

Great analysis as usual! Pedri really is essential for this team. Because of FFP Bernardo might be hard to sign in the summer but what are your realistic “backup” options in that position? Or should we go for other positions (RB, DM and (Lw + Left footed CB)) and maybe go for Wirtz next summer, if he even fits into our system.

You said it all. This is why Guardiola and the coaches after him were so successful. They had several players on the team with insane La Pausa ability. Xavi and Iniesta, Messi and even Pique was decent at it. Suarez and Ney absorbed so well from Messi. This crop of players have work to do.

Great analysis, if you watch Barça videos where players talking and interacting you will see that pedri is a natural leader, a kind of a subtle one, the one that Xavi used to be when he was a player.. but definitely not when he was 20 😅 This man is just crazy, future ballon d'or without any doubt Xavi should either adapt his approach to make him defend less and rest without the ball like Messi, or rest him in the less complicated games which requires an upgrade of Pablo Torre

It's obvious to the eyes that Pedri's absence is affecting the team, one wonders about the improvement of FDJ & the role Busquets has to play in the team. The wingers for me are far from it, they can't take the initiative at all. Come post season, every player must work with the team's performance & improvement coach. But it does make me wonder more about Xavi, why can't he change strategy to utilize the players at his disposal, you can't keep forcing a Pedri influenced system on them, he'll never get the best out of them.

Can you analyze the last madrid-barca? It has been said a lot of xavi's approach, pragmatism, but in press conference he said his approach was the same as always but the team couldn't manage madrid's pressure at midfield and 3/4, so they ended up defending. Sorry if my english is poor in football lenguague, greetings from Argentina.

With Gündoğan being free in the summer, and that lack of a profile being within the sqaud, would you consider his arrival vital to the squad building Barca need to do this summer.? Personally I think along with this RB/DM needs to be addressed as I think the specific profile should be a problem solver. Someone able to understand the game-state and when increase/decrease that tempo during that phase of the game. Often we lack the "pausa" that once characterized the great Barca teams of the past. One thing is for sure both FDJ and Pedri need to have freedom for their best to show.

What catches my attention in your analysis is the lack of Pausa. You've mentioned it before in a previous video. The team doesn't have enough Pausa, which is something Barca midfield has never lacked until now. I see some indecision, wrongly timed and misplaced passes that boils my blood up!😡. It's usually ruins our counterattacks. The only thing perfect in this team right now is Defence. Midfield still has a long way to go. Great analysis as always!

I think Gavi has the potential to be an Iniesta type of midfielder. He has the movement on lock in the way Xavi has deployed him. But he lacks the control to take on that extra role and lighten the load off Pedri. He is aggressive and costs the team future games with picking up yellows or loses his cool. I think as he matures and receives future instruction under Xavi, he can develop and flourish as a duo with Pedri.

As much praise as one can have for Pedri and his amazing skill and talent, one can also criticize Xavi for not putting effort into building the team's identity and having a real plan. Relying on one player to glue everything together proved to be a big problem. A better approach would be to challenge and guide the others specially with how much young talent he has in the team right now and help improve the unit as a whole. I wonder if he will figure out how to go around one player's injury without making it look like he can't trust the current squad to carry out a plan.....even though personally I believe the current squad (without Pedri) can do wonders if they were to be given a good plan.

I think this match should explain very well why Xavi didn't bother to care about the Europa league, at least Barca went down fighting which is the good thing here about their Europa league exit. This match showed Barca prioritized domestic success compared to Europa league, and with how Xavi adapted quick without key players, this shows he is ready to take on Europe, but it just isn't the time yet.

So basically, Pedri is like the metronome of this team. I thought as much. He holds the game down in a way no one else can. And since they are playing DeJong out of position, and his defensive abilities are more required these days, you can't see that same magic in Frenkie.

Pedri is a nice mixture of iniesta and Xavi. Elegant on the ball, can carry the ball to the final third, control the tempo and find the killer pass. But we can’t rely on him all the time. That’s why I think Barça needs wirtz, he’s someone who’s more attacking and has that finishing touch/eye for goal. Pedri-Wirtz-De Jong trio😮‍💨

Pedri has that Messi-esque thing to me. Even if it's just 1% of Messi, that's already a gift most don't even dream about, much less have. For his age, he's unbelievably good with the ball and he was that since he arrived here. Just a naturally gifted midfield player. Without him, we had to play a completely different style. There's less control and creativity and more sluggish chance relying tactics. It worked against Real but it's not always gonna happen. I hope he gets back soon. For good or bad, we need him. One could even say we almost depend on him with a huge percentage for our attacks. We're so lucky to have him.
