The title for this video is the worst kind of clickbait. While the NBL had its struggles due to its rapid growth and lack of professionalism in front offices in the 90’s-2000’s, its rebound to success in the last 8 years has been quite remarkable. The premise of this video would be better suited to the A-Leagues dire situation.

That 2020 Australian Olympic Basketball team was very stacked with 3 players with an NBA Resume. Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and Dante Exum all really impressed me. They gave team USA all they could handle. Imagine if Ben Simmons also played with them damn good chance they finish with a Silver. Sadly by the time the Olympics rolled around Ben Simmons had just finished embarresing himself in the Eastern Conferance Semi Finals by refusing to dunk a basketball when he had the ball under the rim and only player near him was 10 inches shorter than him and famous for how bad his defense is in Trae Young. Instead of dunking it he passed it out to a guy that was double covered.

One of the big factors in basketball's struggle during the 2000s was the football codes' dominance of free-to-air. The NBL selling exclusive broadcast rights to Foxtel in the 2000s was a short-term financial boon that has stifled the NBL and basketball over the long term.

Linking the pre LK era of the league to the post, is like saying the NSL is the same league as the A League. The problems the league had in the past are largely gone. More than half of the teams that folded were suburban teams like you stated, many others were teams in Melbourne and Sydney were there was too many clubs competing against one another. In the current day, the only teams that are in the same area are South East Melbourne and Melbourne. Using Townsville as an example for post LK is also wrong, it was a pre LK team that folded because of issues under the previous ownership. Valutation of the Wildcats and Suns, more showed how undervalued the Wildcats were when they were sold. The valuation seemed low when it was sold, and it was only sold due to the previous owner's ill health. They have revenue of $12.5m a season. The Suns have around $220m. So the Wildcats were sold for less then they bring in each year. The Suns were sold for 18 times what they bring in.

Brisbane Local here. MAJOR issues we have in our sport locally. 1. The trickle down effect from clubs, I have been playing social basketball at Brisbane's major central stadium since 1992, in the 30 odd years of weekly games I cannot recall a time that the Brisbane Bullets had any Branding or introduction. Zero. That is a huge missed opportunity. Everybody I play with and against are avid NBA fans but have little knowledge of the NBL. This is the NBL's fault as they do little in the way of cross promotion. 2. This is a big one, NBL commentators and talking heads. Shane Heal and Derek Rucker have had careers marred by scandal and fraud, yet the NBL has no problem associating with them time and again. The play by play stuff has improved recently (we no longer seem to have converted cricket commentators) but it's still grim. 3. Live game entertainment, the soundtrack, promotions, lighting, contests at live NBL games miss the mark significantly. It's cringeworthy, actually thats a fairly standard problem in NBL circles, they don't know when enough cringe is enough. 4. The NBL talent, association with NBA leagues, NBA money etc is at an all time high, but they need to get real with their marketing, social media and their public persona. The NBL is one big Dad Joke and nobody is finding it funny..Make the NBL cool again.

Totally agree with the OTT PA announcers always urging people with the "louder" and repetitive "defense" chants. Dialing it back would be great. There's also way too much advertising and logos on everything, particularly the court and the jerseys. The jerseys cheap screen printed things. For some reason, Nissan Arena has no scoreboard--relying in end line screens. All in all, the game experience really misses the mark. I don't expect the NBA of course, but the G-League should be an achievable goal. Plus, the price paid for NBL tickets is very similar to most NBA tickets--they just do a better job with everything.

Wow AFL rescheduled games to kill off NBL is brutal. Didn't realise they would do that. There was a time in the 90s the tv rights holder purposely did not televised the games live. I remember having to watch replays at like 11pm even for popular games like the wildcats. I wonder if there was some collusion there with afl While the NBL is doing well now, I would be hesitant to expand quickly again. There's a simple reason why WA sports teams mostly do exceptionally well and it's because the state is flushed with money. When there is money going around there's more sponsorships and more people who can pay for the games. Smaller town teams like the supercats, devils, crocs, falcons etc just do not have enough people nor the big industry sponsor backing them. I hope the league will continue to improve and have more players in the NBA which will improve exposure.

You could have put the high light of the league, the wildcats comeback to half time being only 8pts down against the Houston rockets, come on that's pretty good for the NBL. PS don't worry about the full time score, it's just there team was like 2 starting 5s in the same team, the wildcats just needed a better bench

ABC trying the youtube sport doco format and failing. This was a doco about the cannons. No mention of Bullets collapse and revival. If you had of dedicated it to just cannons it could have been interesting. the way it is is half baked. Canberra should look to the Nissan Arena as a perfect size for Bball in Australia. Great atmosphere.

Need to aim higher. Just look at the investment put into Hobart's Derwent Centre before the league was ready to return there. Now there's discussions of expanding. Canberra needs a new high standard centrally located arena of around 6-8000 capacity. Then a revived Cannons. Brisbane Live can't come fast enough. It's the shot in the arm the Bullets need to return to their rightful place as an iconic Australian sporting brand. They should be able to challenge the Wildcats.

Cost of game day tickets, When I was a member. When the Kings got re-admitted into the comp until I stopped being a member in the first Bogut playing season, the season ticket kept going up and up. Final season before Bogut, season ticket cost $390, Bogut signing jumps to $465 and $510 for his final playing season. As a concession card holder, this was way too much with the over the top increases for long standing members. Plenty of other members walked at the same time due to the price increases way above inflation

Obviously it’s sad that you’re no longer a member however as I mentioned above it hasn’t stopped the Kings from drawing their best crowd numbers in club history. And if the on-court success continues, I’d expect the membership to continue to grow and more casual fans/non-members to buy tickets. With the NBL Finals around the corner I’d expect over 16k crowds at Qudos Bank Arena and it’s a great sign for the Kings and the game in Sydney.

@@lordjayvideos The crowd will probably be lower for the minor finals. I'm a Wildcats member and have attended several finals series, my season membership does not cover any finals games so after paying over $600 for the season many members won't fork over another $60 per game for a minor final (Grand final game, yes). A friend of mine is a WACA (cricket) member and his membership covers every game played, including finals if the team makes it.

I agree. There also really wasn't much benefit in renaming the Melbourne Tigers to Melbourne United, because I think one of the problems with the league had been instability, a revolving door of short lived teams with no history. The Melbourne Tigers had some of the richest history in the league. Ideally, they would have remained the Tigers and retained their history, and when the expansion of a second Melbourne team occurred - especially one called South East Melbourne - the Magic who had a huge rivalry with the Tigers and would sell out Rod Laver would have been the best choice.
