It's the single most artificial element of modern mixes and is a terrible trend. It doesn't elevate anything in the song and just adds mud to everything. Listen to a mix of RATM or SOAD. Original snare with a light sample touch if any. Drums used to have much more depth and dynamics. If you listen to this mix at low levels, the snare is the loudest element which is ridiculous.

I agree completely. I'm very confused why he scooped the midst. I've seen videos with the guitar players from Loathe where they say their tone is almost all mids because of how low the tuning is but this producer never goes into why he chose the EQ. I'm guessing playing it by ear because of the different frequency response in the software he's using 🤷‍♂️

The bass is actually tuned to the same as the guitar. It gives the guitar signal kind of a unique alien quality to it, it’s set to blend with the guitar not just drop it a full octave. It’s used for a texture not pitch utility

If guitar plays a low E, that is open 4th string on bass, where should bass go ? I have seen sub octave bass guitars, and some of them go under 20Hz or octave under standard 4 string bass and I have yet to hear an instrument like this live. I do not see the point of such low tunings, but I love to experiment with sounds.

It's not like distorted guitar is mainly fundamental frequency. Distortion amplifies all the upper harmonics. It's more about the way it sounds. You could just cut off anything below 80hz on electric guitar and still be fine. It's still going sound like it's downtuned, cause the distorted guitar sound is mainly distorted harmonics anyway.

  • @blaness13

I mean the trick here, and low tunings are two different things, This trick is less about creating a down tuned guitar and more about getting a style grit and nastiness to the guitars, a bass is still providing the basis of the low end. Low tuned guitars are generally paired with low tuned bass, And E1 the lowest note on a standard bass is 41.2 hz, and the octave lower would be 20.6hz, There is definitely a different vibe tuning down that you just don't get with E or drop D, But I think anything lower than Drop A or even G, is basically just a dick measuring contest, in that you're not doing much musical things below that, I like A, cause it's easy to write keyboard parts in A minor, (all white keys)

their bassist feisal and their guitarist erik play in the same tuning, EAEA(D F# on high strings for the baritone guitar). This makes them in the same octave, and that's what makes their guitars sound so punchy and their tone so unique. it definitely makes it so there's not a lot of high frequencies in the guitar mix, but the synths, drums, and vocals, all go over top and fill in the high sections.

  • @drumkidstu

Loathe use the Meshuggah technique when it comes to guitars. Though they tune a half step lower than Meshuggah, the same concept applies. Bass tunes in unison with the guitars. Your ear begins to loose the bass much lower than E1 so they tune in unison to preserve the tone and make it super punchy.

It’s not being used as an octave drop it’s being used as an octave blend, meaning you are getting kind of a mix of both and it just gives it a weird sound, it’s not used to just pitch the guitar strictly an octave down. They are using VI style guitars pitched to E1, they are using it to artificially blend a bit of E1 and E0
