Why Are These Aliens Green?
Фильм және анимация

One of the most recognizable species in Star Trek, dating all the way back to The Original Series, is the Orion species. Notorious for their piracy and practicing of slavery, one of the Orions' other most notable traits is their green skin. How has this, as well as other aspects of their biology, impacted the history of their species?

Taking it seriously is part of what makes our fantasies so much fun! The more I can make sense out of a story, generally, the more I like it.
I love the fact that during the original series, the post production houses kept returning footage of the orion women color-corrected to be white, and they complained to Roddenberry about how their color correction was wrong until Roddenberry told them that the orion woman was SUPPOSED to be green

I just always assumed that their green skin was evolved in a manner similar to most species with regards to coloration, as a natural camoflaging. As you noted, the plantlife on their planet is green as well, perhaps their ancient ancestors evolved green skin to blend in to help hunt prey and hide from other predators.

Yes I think that is a better way of seeing it. Their climate and temperature regulation may also be different as to create a different type of adaptation to deal with their particular star. As human skin color variation is our adaptation to dealing with our sun.
@STho205

Then why aren't we green? Our vegetation is very green. Many evolution fan layman assume that mutations just happen conveniently to situational circumstance. However if mutations occur they must be random and they must be based on biochemical realities already existing in the physiology of the parent of the mutation. Some of them work out, many don't. Some aid health, most are destructive to health. Melanin in human skin can go pale pink to tan to black based on the density of melanin cites and their dilation ability. Human skin without these elements are very pale, with some pink, more or dialations tan, lots almost black. However the whiter people didn't just wake up in 7million BCE and say, man this sun is harsh on the skin. Road Trip. A chameleon or octopus has different chemical makeup. A plant leaf and stem has different photoreactive cells.

I was tempted to be a jerk and say, “because that’s what color the body paint was.” But then your video was too excellent. Well done. Now if I really want to be a hair-splitting troll, I could point out that Susan Oliver (The Cage) was actually NOT the first actor to portray an Orion (as, technically speaking, she wasn’t actually Orion, but a human roll playing an Orion in an illusion). Technically speaking, the distinction of the first actor to portray an actual Orion should be credited to Yvonne Craig in the TOS episode “Whom Gods Destroy.” But I’m not a troll, so I would never do that.

I did read in one of the Q books that the Orions were once part of the Toka Empire and weren't slavers or pirates but after the Empire was destroyed they fell into the later trends.

So do central African negroes have black blood cased on carbon? Blood does tint transparent skin (very obvious in Caucasian newbirn babies), but coloring is primarily cells that produce pigmentation despite blood color. Often by hormones (chameleons) or photoreactive (humans with a tan) or by pigment cell density (black humans)

Excuse me gentlemen. I couldn't help overhearing. Mr. Rudibega is employing the flawed logic of *bulverism* or the *identity fallacy*. Instead of presenting information relevant to the discussion, he fabricates his own false premise of motive upon another, and then attacks that construct of his own fictional motive instead of relevant information. This is not a valid form of logical discussion or debate. An argument can only be valid if the form of the argument is logically valid. So avoid using Bulverism, the Identity Fallacy. That would be wise. Afterall, it is only logical.

I figure Orions have been genetically engineering themselves for centuries. So the pheromones they emit would be tailored to local species, allowing Orions to better control whoever they meet. That would be an interesting idea for Orion history, where they would attempt to take over a political organization subtly, rather than by conquest. So lots of politicking rather than threatening, along with building up others to provide better leverage. The pheromones would also be used to establish their dominance at court functions, where the scent of the leader is supposed to be the strongest. This would affect room design, making sure that the scents/pheromones of the guests is sent out of the room via carefully arranged wind traps, while the pheromone scent of the leader would be blown over the guests (to reinforce her authority). It also means if an Orion leader is injured, that her pheromones won't be as strong, potentially leading to a coup or other political turnover (since nobody can smell her scent as strongly). As to the body shape - S6E20 "The Chase" Orion desire for wealth/luxury could even drive their technological development. Rome on Earth would not have wanted to develop better tools as it could put slaves out of work. Orions would develop better technology to make more wealth available. You would also have other Orions who would see the greater wealth being produced, and demand some of that wealth themselves (instead of wealth being concentrated).
Silly...Onions are green because they aren't ripe yet.
I really appreciate the effort on the research you put into your videos and you make it so enjoyable keep it up:)

I remember once in a TOS episode there was a conversation wherein Spock drops the fact that Vulcan and Rigellian anatomies are very similar. Didn’t FASA’s Star Trek role playing game back in the eighties mention that Rigel is part of the Orion colonies? Still, one has to wonder why green blood would only cause Vulcans to appear with only a slight greenish tinge to their skin color and Orions get a full on green hue.

There's a species of lizard in the genus Prasinohaema which has green scales and green blood due to the build up of biliverdin which is the same substance that causes bruises to turn green they evolve those feature because it helps them kill malaria in the tropical environment they're from. This could also be a reason why Orion skin and blood is green
Budget constraints like different colour body paint 😂
Orion’s are cool, but I’ve always been a Andorian fan.
Thanks to Green Lantern for the collab with Orange River in this video.
They're like the Hutt Cartel of the Trek universe. While they may engage in some rather "unsavory" activities, according to other major players, they're largely left to their own devices. Their assistance is offered to the highest bidder, regardless of affiliation. Not really a threat in full-on war, bit still strong enough to not want to mess with willy nilly.
Imagine in the far future having the same casual conversation we'd have guessing where a person's from based on their accent, guessing the star system they're from based on their dermal make-up.
Yes..you must do more.
This reminds me, when Star Trek Online VERY first launched, this one smart aleck in the forums made a post saying that he wished STO had Orion slave girls so he could have one on his ship. Next thing you know, threads and post started popping up all over the forums expressing their outrage at STO having slave girls in game. There were even people crying to boycott the game, and it all started from nothing more than a post from a smart aleck making a joke.

Gaila (Rachel Nichols) is my favorite Orion.
The Orions in Star Trek Online have a hue range far greater than that of humans, they have all of our pinks and browns and paler whites as well as varying greens. Though the paler varieties are very rare.
What about species on Voyager like Okampa, Tellaxians and species 8472... or some of those weird lifeforms that inhabit space like living spaceships (on TNG?!)? Or the creatures that the Equinox crew were abusing? Is suppose the changelings are probably the most curious. I wouldn't go as far as 'Farscape'... it's a long time since I saw any of that, but I remember it's got a real living spaceship! Oh the list is endless if you go to Star Wars and Doctor Who and all the other Sci-fi films and series...!

I haven't really covered the Prime Directive as a singular topic, I believe.
They are green because the O'Ryans are Irish.
This reminds me - if a species evolved near a red dwarf which I believe emit more infrared than anything wouldn't that mean they, and their plants, would evolve to be infrared "colour", thus pitch black to us?
