Why Are There So Many Iranians In Los Angeles? [Becoming Iranian-American, Pt. 1] | AJ+

Los Angeles is home to the largest community of Iranians outside of Iran. But what are the origins of this slice of Iran in America, aka “Tehrangeles”?
Watch Part 2: • Being Iranian In LA.: ...
When the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis happened, Iranians in the United States endured a period of immense anti-Iranian sentiment. They were protested, beaten - even their immigration status was threatened.

I was there last February and the people are so kind in Iran I never experienced this kindness in other places, and I travel a lot. The people are nice, the food and their culture. The people are not their government, they are just human like us. If I have the chance again I will go again to Iran!

I'm sad to say that there are many "new" or renewed restrictions on Iranian nationals and citizens wishing to enter the USA - legally. However, if you claim asylum citizenship from Iran, you will be granted immediate citizenship. (I know the irony in that, but that is how the US statute is written, according to my immigration lawyer.) Best of luck, truly.)

I can only speak from personal experience. I was a young woman in London & met many Iranian families who'd fled from Iran after the Shah had been deposed. They were gentle, kind, intelligent & well educated people. The professional classes. They were devastated at what they thought was a massive backward step in their country & wept for their beautiful country. They had lost so much, yet they remained optimistic. I know most either stayed in London or moved to the US. Certainly far, far nicer than the violent thugs invading Europe.

Growing up, my best friends was a family that immigrated from Samoa. Our favorite place to eat is this Korean BBQ place in Torrance that we grew up with. My schools were always diverse. Myself, I'm half Mexican half French. I remember when my family took a family trip to the East Coast. My mom was forced into an existential crisis when we couldn't find a single grocery store that sold tortillas in Pennsylvania. LA is the true melting pot of the US. More so than NY.

I love all the Iranians people, they are very friendly and hard workers, all they want is peace, and better future. As a Mexican emigrant I have a lot of connections with them. Love and peace ✌️ Iranians brothers and sisters.

lol I know I'm late but anyway My family and I are moving abroad and I'm literally so scared, I'm from Iran, and I'm Muslim( and English is not my mother tongue), I feel like people will judge me (I'm proud of my county and identity but since some people call Iranians and Muslims "terrorists" I'm kinda scared) but these comments really helped me, KZread has the best comment sections ever :)

Tehran winter temperature is more like Maryland, USA and is characterized as a cold desert climate with continental climate and Mediterranean like rain patterns

As a Persian American who has lived in the middle of Persian Square (a few steps from where the video was filmed) my whole life, I call myself "Persian" because I associate "Iranian" with post-revolution Iran. The culture has changed since the revolution. The culture I grew up with and relate to is Persian culture, not the "Iranian culture" of post-revolution Iran. So I'm Persian, not Iranian. But that's just me.

@@purpleblastoise The word Iraq is derived from the city of Warka in Iraq. As for Iran, it means the Persian Aryan peoples, and this is the symbolic name for the country. Each country has an ethnic name and a national name

There are so many Iranians in LA because that is where they went after the Shah was disposed. Mostly all are Jewish and very polite. They for the most part are respected and have been a positive addition to the area in LA that they chose to live. They have some outstanding restaurants and some of the best tea that you will ever have...that ice cream store they show has some the best on the west coast...
