Why are there so many Foreign CRIMINALS in China?

I've met a lot of serious criminals working as English teachers and the like in China, how is it that they manage to thrive in China?

Winston. China may appear to be the place you can reinvent yourself. But as tough as China is getting on all of us, China isn't the place to run and hide from the law. China doesn't want us. After 5 years you have to leave anyway. Once you taught English in China for 5 years, they won't renew your visa anymore. Plus with the US verses them mentality towards us the Chinese have, is China really the place to reinvent yourself? You hear stories all the time about why so many are leaving. Many schools that abuse us, the racial mentality they have, and all that. So yeah your problems back home may not follow you out there. But if you are out there, you are going to have other problems facing racial discrimination in China. You will never truly be one of them. Not gonna happen. Also, every one of us, regardless of what visa you hold or what you do there, you can be deported on a whim. Their laws are very weakly defined. Therefore they can deport you for any reason at all. You don't even have to do anything wrong. They can just say they suspect you of something. Also, your visa isn't your own. Your company can cancel your visa and tell you to leave. No due processing. No hearings. Nothing. You have NO RIGHTS in China at all. And if your employer cancels your visa without telling you, well now you are an illegal alien and will be held accountable once authorities find you. There are things you can be held accountable for which are completely out of your control. China isn't a safe haven for people who want to start fresh with a clean slate. Because there will be issues on discrimination you will face in China. There is no affirmative action in our favor like there is for minorities in America. There is no Chinese Antifa to fight for us. There are no Chinese politicians lime Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, all who want open borders. No. Xi Jinping is the right wing nationalist that the left wing media in America portrays trump to be. Anyone going to China looking for a fresh start and a chance to reinvent themselves know nothing about China compared to what I know.

Winston, an interesting twist: My wife fled from China to America to escape criminal charges. Actually, just possible criminal charges. She worked for a local government in China and accepted tons of bribes to prioritize property title transfers. Kind of a minor offense really once you realize almost all Chinese government employees are taking bribes. Anyway, she was going to be investigated so she got scared and managed to get a tourist visa to America.

I'm not a criminal in Australia, but I'm a total social outcast, living on the very fringes of society. No friends at all, crappy job, low income, mundain, financially in huge debt etc. A few years ago I used to have a chinese girlfriend, she took me to china for a holiday... When I was in china just 3 weeks, people looked at me differently. Some people wanted to take selfies with me off the street. People wanted to speak english with me, people found me interesting. For the first time and only time in my life I felt like I'd gone up a few levels socially. It's hard to explain, but I've often just fantasized of just vanishing one day into China. To me, the only ties holding me back are my elderly parents... To me, it sounds like one hell of an adventure.

I got my first work visa to work in China in 2016. I needed to write a test, show my notarized university degree, and show a criminal background check from my local police department. When my contract ended in 2018, I went back to Canada and soon remembered why I left. In 2019, I had to reapply for a work visa and it was a much more stringent process. My criminalbackground check, had to be notarized, and I had to resubmit my previous notarized University degree. I think it’s harder to get into China than it used to be. And yes I’m an English teacher, and fairly proud of it.

With the right gearbox, I shift as quick as automatic, or even quicker if it's a bad automatic. (Just the modern electronic throttle assistance and all that crap pisses me off to no end.) Man, it hurts so much that the to me perfect car in terms of state of technology sits in a garage in need of very expensive repair and maintenance.

Many foreigners in China are super-dodgy. When I was living there I pretty much avoided other foreigners as far as possible and lived in a normal middle class Chinese neighbourhood. I have worked (as a TEFL teacher in China) with alcoholics, heroin addicts, criminals and someone who from my understanding murdered someone in their home country. Many foreigners that come to China can't function in their home country so they think everything will be swell in China, however, when they are found out it is even worse for them. One of the so called teachers I worked with, an American, was sacked from the school I was working for. He ended up being a beggar in a town in Dongguan which is a large city close to Shenzhen.

Fascinating video, and I can relate to the "cushioning" of ones career titles, LOL. I'm a retired Fire, Safety and Security Officer, with a career focused on Industrial Security/Loss Prevention, then later Educational Safety/Crisis Management. That is, of course, I'm a retired security guard. I will say however, that my story resembles yours in that, I'm college-educated, have learned two foreign languages (and a smattering of a couple of others from the military) and maintained certifications in fairly advanced emergency response, active-shooter response, especially after school shootings became "a thing" here. LOL, I can honestly say my career was "law enforcement-adjacent"! I just went into school security because I got tired of having a target painted on my back while earning comparatively half the salary that law enforcement typically earn. I do thank you for the insight of life in China, I always find other cultures fascinating--and I loved watching you cruise the streets by the ocean-front!

It just made me realize that just because I took my job more seriously by lesson planning and reading articles online about teaching methods, making surveys for my students, teaching them how to analyze data, etc. I was still just doing something that a hung over loser that aged into mediocrity could do.
