Spurs have a huge chance of qualifying for the Champions League once more by finishing in the top spots of the Premier League but not every fan is delighted with the way their team are playing. Does it matter how entertaining Conte's side is to watch if they get results? What could they change?

@@toohottyentertainment *That's not it.* Tottenham, unlike any other top side, is perfectly willing to drop into a deep block and allow quality opposition to dominate possession, choosing to take their chances on the counter with speculative runs and long passes rather than creating their own chances in the opponent's third. *That style of play* can stymie technically talented teams that are patient in possession and play a high press-like Arsenal, who dropped points against bus-parking sides in Southampton, Newcastle, Everton, and Brentford-and Manchester City, who dropped points against Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and-whaddya know-Southampton, Newcastle, Everton, and Brentford. Arsenal lost to a negative Manchester United side who had yet to jettison Ronaldo and find their creative form, and City lost to a Tottenham side who seem to play negative football against every big six club. *Those pyrrhic results* are much more difficult to come by for ambitious well-coached teams like Brighton or self-respecting clubs like Liverpool or Chelsea who play with too much pride to resort to negative, unwatchable football. You give Sp*rs too much credit by saying they turn up for big games. What they do is to take a Champions League squad and make them play like a newly-promoted Championship side, putting on a miserable show and alienating their most devoted supporters.

The reason Spurs were good in possession under Pochettino was because they had technically gifted players in midfield and defence (Eriksen, Dembele, Alderwiereld), but now they’re relying on players like Hojberg, Skipp, Dier who will put a good shift in, but don’t excel with the ball at their feet.

simple. Conte (and Mourinho for that matter) are reactive coaches. Their basic game is sit deep and pray for smash-n-grab to get a result. Works if the league has only 2-3 top teams. It does not work in PL anymore because it has become way too competitive you cannot rely on 1-2 chances per game to break smaller teams down. They are forced to come out of their rigid shell in the 2nd half to get an equalizer/winner and were exposed as a poorly-coached team. Does Spurs even practice attacking patterns and combination plays in training?

I fully expect Conte to go after we get taken out by AC Milan later today, but that will only be one solution the the many issues plaguing the club, the main one being the ownership. Unless that changes we will forever be spinning out wheels going no where, hoping for the once in a blue moon lucky break where we get close to winning but ultimately fail because... Crappy ownership still in place!! Levy (🙄) will probably go for Poch to keep us all quiet, if I was Poch I wouldn't walk back into this role without cast iron written into the contract guarantees over the spend, if he doesn't get that and takes the job again he deserves what ever happens (which you know will him depressed on the touch line waiting for naffing Danny to pull the plug again)

Well, I guess... welcome to the world of Antonio Conte? Atalanta fan here, been knowing him for quite a long time, since he basically went head on with our former captain (as well as with the supporters, goes without saying). He did pretty well at Juventus, as well as Chelsea and Inter, but what nobody ever liked about him (despite the attitude, obviously) is that never seemed to have a backup plan: always playing passively with that 3-5-2 formation, changing players role-for-role and that's about it: not scoring enough? Move in a forward, move out another one; not enough density in the midfield? Out a midfielder for one that hopefully ends up being more physical and better suited for the match. And that is it, really. Inter fans were critizing him quite harshly for this reason, when he got sent off the UCL in the second season; sure, he ended up winning them the title, but still never moved aside from his style of play, never making changes or major adjustments. As well as never being an entertaining team to watch, but as long as you win I guess that's not the biggest of problems.

Spurs have simply just got found out. Brighton under Potter were the first team to figure it out last season when we lost to them, as long as a team sits back in a solid defensive shape, spurs can’t score because their players are not creative. As a result whenever spurs are in possession teams always immediately switch to a defensive shape resulting in spurs side passing, teams also immediately take advantage of their 2 man midfield which means spurs won’t even be in possession most times now. Last season teams committed everyone forward and played a super high press against spurs but spurs would always end up thrashing them, this season nobody bar City and Liverpool have done that which is why Spurs have so much success against them most times

They were proven to be successful when Conte just arrived to a new league where the other teams might not be familiar or have forgotten his tactical styles, but not in a long run. The other issue with the players Tottenham have signed recently, is that just 3 or 4 are actually regular starters or at least frequent subs. But the majority are either squad playres that play very few games, and in some cases no games at all. Some of them have gone out on loan deals, but the club hasn't been able to bring back much money out of them. As for Arsenal, most of their "expensive" signings have become actual regulars, and only a few of them have been disapointing. Those few that don't play much for Arsenal have already left, maybe not for a big fee, but at least the club has been able to move them on and take them out of their wage bill, and some of them had really big wages for how little or bad they played. So Spurs have a bloated squad, with high wages, but most ot those players are not playing, either because they don't suit Conte's style, or they are just not good enough anymore. Maybe some of them were bought at a point where they had played really good elsewhere and the club tought they would use them more, but their level has decreased and now nobody is interested in buying them either due to the wages or for the amount that spurs want to get. If a different manager comes in the summer, they might be able to use some of those players more effectively in a different tactic, but the main problem is recruitment rather than tactics.

Really good analysis of spurs play. I'd also draw on how poor Perisic has been and that when he plays Son doesn't score, or even pass to him that often. Lack of class defenders exc Romero means we can't push our defensive line higher up. WB's in general have been poor so no creativity there. And missing out on Eriksen and not getting a passing creative player in the middle limits central play. Conte's doing his best with a bad bunch, reflective of a really poor transfer window and policy under Levy.

The tactics were absolutely just fine if we have the quality of the players. If the LCB and CCB had the sense of dictating the game we could easily win the ball as fast as Romero would love, which means we win it in front defensive line before they got into the last line. When Bentancur is there, Hojbjerg and him would usually become the first person who win the ball and start the counter by moving in forward. But with Skipp the transition getting a lot more slower and the way ball driven up just doesn't work because Emerson and Perisic doesn't have the pace to keep up. Last season Sessegnon were doing just fine because he's one the option on transition making usually 4v3 on the counter with Kane, Kulu, and Son alongside with him. And that's impacted Son's gameplay either, last season Sessegnon was the one who would bring the ball from the defensive line making Son got a free space on the final line. Meanwhile now Perisic and Son seems to be in the same position again and again which is frustrating. Perhaps we need another window to sign a LCB like Bastoni or Ndicka and having a CCB with the Ball Playing ability like Dier and the interception ability like Romero would be fine. Perhaps we should sign a CM with a creative force in terms of playmaking like SMS or Mason Mount. The one who could do both job on the field to cover up bentancur and Hojbjerg.

Some of Messi and Ronaldo's best goals would have low xG but it's because they're talented and are performing better than expected for a baller, not because they're overperforming

In a year where Spurs are fourth, most teams are effectively worse than them. And if their football, which relies on opponents making mistakes, isn't working, then the next few years will be very hard if they stick with Conte. This will likely be the last year (for a long time) that they remain in the Champions League. With this in mind, it is essential, financially and for the sanity of supporters, to turn this form around, salvage what has been a miserable season and secure Champions League football. A refresh and change of mood is almost certainly a way to enact this. Pochettino coming back would bring this. Spurs almost have an alright team. They need a new centre half, goal keeper and number 10 in the summer but this squad can get top four. Unfortunately for Spurs and their fans, almost every 50/50 footballing decision made by the board and club have been incorrect over the last year. Because of this, I don't hold much faith in them remaining in the Champions League or any even any European Competition next year. From there it is a slippery slope especially with the background running of the club.

Due to my sympathetic attitude towards Son, Perišić and Forster, I've been looking at Spurs under Conte, even though my team is Celtic. I think the problem has been correctly identified, but the solution is/was simple. Kuluševski hugs the line, but is too slow to operate as a winger. He needs to move into the center. That way, he wouldn't block the wing back (Emerson is IMO better than Porro) from bombing forward. Being risk-averse is fine, but long balls instead of "safe" short passes would actually be safer, yet better in attack. If Kuluševski is part of the midfield in a pure 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2, he can have the whole pitch in front of him in view, and fire passes for Son and Kane to prey on. Getting rid of Dier won't happen. Homegrown quota and all that. What Tottenham should buy are central defenders (to replace Sanchez, Romero and Lenglet) and a keeper.

Best Spurs can hope for is to bring Poch back and sell Kane to fund a rebuild. They didn't win anything under Poch last time but at least they played good football and went to a UCL final.

Watching this video after the Tottenham - Milan game, and my god is it accurate. Watching paint dry is more exciting than Spurs games, absolute waste of an English Champions League ticket.

I don’t think this is totally accurate, there’s some great midfield creative talent camped out on the bench right now. Also want to remind people that Poch eventually got two of his ideal signings for his style and they are both out on loan right now because they didn’t perform

That was excellent! The things you said and how you said them ! Simply the perfect review. Boring is the word, absolutely! You deserve a pay rise cause Antonio gets 15 million for his shite football 😂 I'm so sick of Spurs, you can't imagine.
