Seems like a reasonable equation, right? But wait…are there other factors? Red Lobster shut down nationally, not just CA. Covid affected restaurants globally. Historically low unemployment has affected hiring nationally. Inflation has affected consumer pricing globally. And in the case of Salud Taco, the problem was the landlord. So, huh. It seems more complex than x+y=z

People have less money and are more conscious about what they eat. Rubio's has a ton of competition so that made sense to me. I am cooking at home more this year not because I set a goal for myself but just because my behavior changed on its own.

We will out in Cali during the winter and half of the restaurants were empty, kitchens were closing at 8 pm, but you can still buy alcohol until 2 am...portions left us hungry and poor....never again!

Those fish tacos were really delicious.

I am from San Diego and enjoyed Rubios mostly 25 plus years ago. Once in a while I'll still go there on Taco Tuesday, when their tacos are hugely discounted, otherwise they are over priced. Often their tacos aren't that great and fried for too long. I won't miss them, lots of better places to eat for less.

All franchise businesses go under all the time in California and because of the franchise fees being out of control while having to also buy all the ingredients from the company and then having to pay all your business taxes and paying your employees, you got thin margin lines for profit. Red Lobster and Rubios were already circling the bowl, mostly due to poor (and for Red Lobster deliberately poor) management, both declaring bankruptcy recently. Rubio's ceased operations in Florida in 2020, when the Florida minimum wage was still $8.56. Red Lobster didn't go down to endless shrimp, it went down because the private equity that bought it sold their buildings and then leased them back, keeping all the cash for themselves. But McDonald's is posting record profits and 33% margins even after the wage hikes, and In-and-Out is still posting 20% margins while paying employees $20 an hour and keeping their prices under $10. Just another straight-up "blame labor" propaganda story from CBS 8. Without the gouging, prices would still be under $10 here, just like it is at In-and-Out.

I ran a casual dining restaurant for 7 years and before that I did front of house for a AAA 5 diamond property. I now own and run a real estate consulting firm. The point of this propaganda news article is to try and get people mad about the $20 an hour, which is clearly not affecting fast food like you think it is. Moreover, restaurants like Red Lobster are NOT required to pay $20 an hour; they can pay $16. So this article makes the false comparison which both you and I object to, for different reasons it seems. I don't like the dishonesty, you do.
