Devastated about Ryan, of course, but their level of professionalism when they not only completed their Australian tour after his death, but also did the European summer festival tour. Deadset legends.

Also you mentioned metal singers being able to maintain those fry screams on the road. If you enjoy the more modern down-tuned aggressive metalcore sounds, I implore you to explore the work of Mick Gordon on the videogame soundtrack for Doom and Doom eternal. No lyrics to speak of generally, but the music is so powerful in its intent and execution that the point is clearly put across regardless. For those unfamiliar, the title track for Doom features a chainsaw (run through a synthesiser) as the lead instrument. Definitely a novel approach to making music, and it sounds absolutely phenomenal.

    I wished I had known about Polaris before Ryan Siew's death. He was a talented guitarist who I would have wanted to see play live in concert. News articles don't disclose the cause of his death. He has mentioned on his instagram that he stopped taking anti-depressants and was recovering from brain fog in January this year. I shouldn't speculate, but my initial thoughts when I read the articles were that he may have taken his own life. It's very heartbreaking if that's the case. My heart goes out to anyone who is suffering from mental health issues ❤ Polaris' music is awesome. I need to see these guys in concert. Their Triple J performance of "Vagabond" is excellent. The lyrics in their songs really do reflect the subjects of "anxiety, depression and loss."

    Not to be confused with the band “polaris”, formed from members of miracle legion, to score the American children’s show “the adventures of Pete and Pete”. Periphery do that messed up dissonance bit during their melody pieces like you were talking about! Graveless and Dracul Gras is a great example! Omega as well is another great example and all the chords in the clean part are basically stacked 4ths/dissonant chords under the melody. Really evil sounding!

    I always think of the choruses in these kind of songs as "the Evanescence bit". Bland minor key stuff with the same anguished held notes. Then in the 2nd verse the singer is back to shredding his vocal cords again to reassure you he's still hardcore.

  • @fmkwvejf

    @fmkwvejf

    Polaris has 2 vocalists actually! On their first 2 albums it's pretty much the long-haired lead singer doing all the screams, while the bassist does the clean melodic singing. On this album (their third), they overlap a bit more, with each of them doing both harsh and clean vocals at times. Though it's still mostly Jamie screaming and Jake singing, like on this song.

    1:35 (ish): I’m hearing the intro to Halestorm’s “White Dress”. Further in the video, I’m hearing something else familiar, but my ear hasn’t found the right synapse in my brain. I’m thinking it’s reminiscent of a band I recently saw live, which is either Breaking Benjamin or Disturbed, or a mashup of both bands. Sorry my brain is overloaded with music lately, and showing its age. I recently binged Seether, and binged Alter Bridge this morning. Now _I’m_ just waffling. 😂 Justin, don’t do the screaming/growling vocals without talking with the vocalists who can sing like you do, *and* growl/scream *and* haven’t lost their voices. Did you notice that Wolf commented on your Insta post? I think it’s time you two do a podcast together.
