Wealthy people have moved here, driven up the cost of everything and made it impossible for working class people to live here. Living in the surrounding communities is just as expensive as living in the city limits.

You have a very different stance on Asheville! 😊 I did hear the 90’s were cool though.

I moved away from Asheville because I got tired of " the scene". I always felt like I was living in the middle of someone else's party. I wanted a simple, quiet life. I can still drive to Asheville when I want a fun night on the town. I worked at the Grove Park Inn for a while. I couldn't afford most of what Asheville has to offer. It's rich people's playground..

Asheville has the same problem Greenville,SC has-too much growth, too fast. Asheville now has drug addicts sleeping next to businesses downtown. Everything is so expensive. Grove Park Inn parking went from free to $10 to $25 in a short span.Still a cool place, just expensive and less safe.

I recently visited Greenville South Carolina and was actually kind of surprised. It felt squeaky clean. And the Grove park charges $25 during the holiday time when they have all the gingerbread houses up. I don’t think it’s full-time $25 but I could be wrong.

As a NC native(Charlotte) Ashville has been unrecognizable to me for several decades. So disappointing it tried to become the SF of the east. We have the same growth issues in Charlotte, but we get mostly New Yorkers.

I know someone who lived in Asheville, he got a good paying job, but that job is a computer based job and out of state. Hes working in the comfort of his home. He said that there's not many jobs in the local area so he looked outside.

There are SO many different kinds from coding to IT to administrative assistants.

I lived there for almost two years. The beauty draws you in, but the people are unfriendly , rude, and strange as f@&$! I thought it would be cool to live there because I’m liberal and open minded . Honestly, I guess I’m not because my idea of fun is not gathering around a drum circle late night . I have nothing against that , but there’s nothing there . I think because of the mountains , the city can’t expand or grow. The cost to live there is stupid. I remember my parents referring to my neighbors as invasion of the body snatchers because they wouldn’t look at us, acknowledge us, nor say hello back ever. That was exactly 20 years ago. Worst place I’ve ever lived. Great place to visit for one day, but that’s different. I’ve always said this is the perfect place for a serial killer to start his spree because no one will care nor notice. I’ve let it go, but it still makes me sad I wasted two years of my youth there.

YEAP left the ASHVILLE area, 10 years ago,,and hell yes as a blue color worker, the pay in the area is horrible. Actually I liked some of the smaller towns around ASHVILLE,,but never liked ASHVILLE, yeah it has some cool spots, but I don’t see the hype.

Everything was more fun before we had so many responsibilities

My family has been in Asheville before there was an Asheville, almost 350 years. When you look at my DNA history say on 23andMe, they actually list us in a special category as "Early Settlers of WNC". We came before the Ulster-Scotts when there were only the Cherokee. There are family homes in Asheville that are on the National Registrar list for historic homes. We were the largest employer outside of the school system and even Mission Hospital. We built and operated Biltmore Dairy and Farms for the Vanderbilts and later the Cecil's. We were the first to settle in Biltmore Forest. My family owned half the real estate along Wall St. and downtown Patton. I preface my family history to say I'm a "super native" and I LOVE what has become of Asheville. I moved off to college in the mid-80's when Asheville was basically a dump downtown with hookers, porn theaters, drugs being sold near the police station and many of the buildings were closed and boarded up. Some of my family members do not like what has happened to the City, but I think this has more to do with traffic, which admittedly is pretty bad for a small city. I still come back to Asheville occasionally. Most of my family still lives there. I wish Asheville was like it is today when I grew up. Anyone waxing nostalgic about how Asheville used to be, say 1930-1990 or so, I don't have time for. Unfortunately, I won't be moving back, but I did find a nice 2nd home in the Burnsville/Spruce Pine area, but Asheville will always be home to me.

I share your sediment and I really enjoy what Asheville has become but I know that my perspective is only one and for a lot of people it has been a disservice and for a lot of other people it has been pure delight. As with anything. I love being a tourist in my own town and having the capabilities to keep extending my adventure daily. There’s a new kind of spark To it.

Well, I am pretty lucky. I just happen to have a husband who is extremely interested in KZread and grew up with a film background. Not everybody has that and they have to double time it. Don’t give me wrong, it still takes a lot of work, but at least I have him to help me. And I thank you, I prefer it as well. I don’t think I could ever keep up with trying to hold the camera and think about what I’m going to say and think about where I am in the sunlight, etc. it’s just too much my eyes would cross. although you may be mad coming up pretty soon cause I just ordered myself a new Christmas present, which is going to let me take a little bit of creative control on some of the videos and do it myself. I’ll be interested to hear what you think about those. I'll try to do them justice.

I have lived here for the past fifty years and have witnessed many changes to Asheville. Your review is excellent and a very accurate assessment of the current situation. For me, I have always enjoyed the option of living in rural Buncombe County and commuting to work in downtown Asheville. Now more and more people have opted for that lifestyle as well. This, along with increased tourism, has led to an more traffic and has help exasperate the downtown parking shortage. The job market continues to be based largely upon tourism. Service industry wages will not match the cost of living downtown. Residential locations, that are within walking distances of everything that Asheville has to offer, are being purchased by retirees and investors. There are still plenty of places in Asheville and Buncombe County to be utilized better but mass transit is almost non existent, so the traffic problem will not improve. Add to that, the future expansion and relocation of Interstate 26 through town. We are about the see a relocation of many residences during this construction as well as traffic interruptions. Despite all of this, as you pointed out, the overall net migration to the rate is positive. Most individuals that I know leaving the area; do not hate Asheville (or what it has become) but rather hate not being able to afford living in Asheville. Unlike Charlotte or Raleigh , there are not a lot of job options.

I think you are just describing what is happening to any city in the US that is desirable to live in. It’s an age old tale not just specific to this time and not specific to Asheville. I did see some recent data that says the population of Asheville is down approximately.36 percent year over year though. But the population of Buncombe county is up over 1.3 year over year. I could see people who rent moving to Weaverville for cheaper rents. I don’t see the houses for sale to be much cheaper though. You just seem to perhaps get more for your money. Black Mountain seems actually more expensive than a lot of Asheville for what you get. I guess it depends if you are talking about rents, entry level homes, or higher end homes. But of course I’m just sitting here in Florida looking on Zillow lol! You look great! Enjoyed the video. I will have to go to that roof top bar next time I’m in town!

Thank you so much! Yes, people who rent will always get a better deal the farther they go outside of town but when talking about Black Mountian, it can be as expensive or more expensive than Asheville because it is somewhat of a destination in itself. There are a lot of second homes in Black Mountain especially around the Montreat area. It has that summer camp feel. There are now so many rooftop bars and Asheville. It is so super fun. You all are going to have a blast.

We saw James McMurtry at the Grey Eagle on May 4th of this year and Oliver Hazard and Houndmouth at the Orange Peel the next night. We flew from South Florida just to see them and those venues are 2 of the reasons that we want to move there.

Development is going on all over the South. We live in Chattanooga, TN and everywhere you turn there is new development. We're wondering if the infrastructure can support it. We visited Asheville for the first time recently. It was a mixed bag. Streets seemed dirty and unkempt. But it is in a beautiful location for sure.

@@livinginashevillecompare them to places like Japan where there is no litter and ppl sweep the side walks. Our streets are dirty and not well maintained. To a American they are average. Especially around older areas of the city like where the old hot spot is and merriment ave.

Need to figure out how we bring up the wages and bring down the expense to live here if we want to see Asheville continue to thrive. Our Service Industry workers need to be able to afford to live here or the service industry will die.

I think it was a mistake to drive out the manufacturing industry. Not good to have a tourism only based industry.

Also, parking and walking seem to be an issue as well. That could be another reason why folks reside outside AVL proper.

Yes, people complain about parking downtown, especially because you have to pay for it in the parking garages. I’ve been pretty lucky so far but I know during really busy times of the year it can be a pain. There are so many beautiful and fantastic places to live right outside the city limits that creates much more flow and ease.

I used to love going to Asheville in the 90's and early 2000's. I saw many bands plays there. Great music scene.

Absolutely fantastic music scene…. I’m often overwhelmed at the options.

craft beer hub, exceptional views, always music venues, Biltmore and Grove Park Inn, all surrounded by the Appalachians... (the Blue Ridge Parkway goes right through it)... I would visit a decade before when everyone had dogs and the restaurants stood out, then I moved there in 2022-23... very expensive and turning liberal very quickly, and work was hard to find. one downfall for growth is the road system, there is only 2 main N to S roads and one is the interstate, they were doing major upgrades when I left, but there's still just 2. And it's very mountainy, so windy, often narrow roads are the norm. (surprised there aren''t more accidents)... and bears are everywhere, which is a positive or negative depends on your view... ( i watched a man shoo a momma and her cubs away from his garbage cans with a broom)

I’ve only been to Asheville once, but I’ve heard people talk about its growth and development. I think I can relate somewhat having lived 30 years in Nashville, TN. In the 90s it was a cool and kind of gritty place downtown, but you could actually just walk into a bar and get a drink and not have to wait in line like you do today. I rented an apt on the west side of downtown for $500/mo. It has always been a tourist destination but in the past 10 - 15 years it has gotten ridiculous. The rent and housing prices have gone crazy even in the surrounding areas. The traffic rivals Atlanta now. Tons of people are moving there just like Asheville, but for some of us it just isn’t our vibe anymore. I understand people moving from Asheville because I moved away from a city under constant construction. After a while I just wanted to live in a city that was already built. Maybe that’s how people feel about Asheville. No hate on Asheville (or Nashville), killer places to visit no doubt, but it doesn’t feel very organic with all the marketing to make these cities boom.

The heart is still very much alive and well here even though new people have come. It grew up near Nashville and saw that you talk about too.

The more stack and pack apartments in a city, the less desirable it becomes to me. I have yet to visit a mid sized city from coast to coast that isn't doing this. :-( Enjoyed your tour and insights. I have always heard; you don't move to Ashville to make money. You make your money first then move there.

Yeah, I call it Soviet Bloc Housing. They're doing it everywhere. Developers and investors are buying up houses and land and putting these multi-family apartments up and charging obscene rent prices. A space that one or two houses used to occupy will now hold hundreds of units. All of those people will contribute to clogging the roads, because the apartment complexes usually have their own parking decks. Many are at least trying to design small "villages" around these places where many things are accessible by walking. However, if all of these people can afford the rent, then there had better be enough jobs that pay well enough to afford it.

I remember when West Asheville was the place to get away. Now the radius is so much wider.

I lived in Asheville from '92 to '00, all of my 20's. I made some life long friends, and they tell me that my beloved city is no more. I plan to move back soon at 53. I think Arden would be my best choice. Any thoughts or comments about Arden would be greatly appreciated .✌❤

Sure, we’re getting ready to do a whole video on Arden but where did you live when you lived here before? Asheville is ever evolving and it depends on perspective whether it’s good or bad. For me it’s good because I enjoy new things and adventure and new people. Arden is developing and has a ton of second locations for popular restaurants and activities in downtown so you don’t necessarily have to drive downtown all the time. It’s only getting bigger and it’s cool because it’s close to the airport and also close to Hendersonville which is quite fun too. Beth, I don’t know which video editing software you use, but the volume of your voice is much quieter than the volume of your music inserts. I have to keep changing the volume because I hate the sound getting so loud!!! You need to make the two volumes similar. -Brad, moving to a rental in Asheville in January.

I've been a recording engineer in Nashville for 35 years so I kinda know about levels . In the meantime, I will continue to use my volume control as long as the audio is uneven, regardless of what the all knowing audio tech BDaddy thinks! LOL. Your music audio is definitely louder than when you talk. I’m 65 and been dealing with videos a long time. I don’t know what the Boozedaddy is trying to accomplish by speaking out saying I’m a liar. She’s probably a competing content creator who wants your videos to have problems. Look, you can play them on a big screen with a sound bar with the volume set and see for yourself. Don’t take anybody’s opinion and do the task to confirm right or wrong yourself. I watch on a Samsung TV with a Samsung sound bar, therefore the audio amplification is significantly better than the Intel onboard sound card BDaddy is using to power his studio monitors. They’re only as good as the audio signal provides and a laptop sound card is bottom of the barrel. Just please take a look at it. Regardless what Bdaddy says. Clearly he has a crush on you and he doesn’t know how to come out and say it so he plays Sound Angel to provide good news and win your heart! Lol Also, I’m moving to Asheville as a renter starting in January. I’m a potential home purchase customer in late 2024 and outspoken BDaddy is a nobody.

Asheville has changed a lot since the late 90s, with increased traffic, developers are building apartment complexes like crazy, meanwhile the City is adhering to Agenda 2030 goals by decreasing Merrimon from 2 lanes on either side to just 1 (the "road diet"), they instituted a $30/car tax no matter what the age or value of the car on top of registration and car value tax, and real estate taxes are obscene! I wish I'd bought a house back when I had a good job in the late 90s, but waited instead until 2006, and then the market bottomed out and while I'd love to move out to even Jupiter to get out of Asheville's gravitational field, I'm boxed in. I'm nervous to go downtown anymore, and there are panhandlers on every single street corner, which I've NEVER seen before the past 3-4 years, and there is a HUGE homeless problem here, as well as a huge drug problem. A woman high on meth broke into a friend of mine's gallery a couple years back and started screaming, taking off all her clothes, and trying to destroy his gallery. Driving up Merrimon, I sometimes see people acting crazy on the sidewalk. At Well Bred Bakery before Covid, the cashier complained about having to clean up copious amounts of needles in their outdoor seating area for work. Asheville was not like this 10-15 years ago. Yes, if I had the economic means, I would stay in the mountains, but leave the city limits, because taxes are twice as high in Asheville as Buncombe, and when I see the crazy things they put taxes towards, the racist, woke agendas, it makes me cringe. We can't vote it away, because I don't think we have election integrity. I remember seeing a report of voter demographics in the 2016 election, and there were several people aged 115 years old here who voted (hint--I don't think they were still living). Meanwhile, they try to entice and cram as many people here as possible, which I thought impossible because of topography, but I fully expect them to ban single housing dwellings at some point, in order to pack people in like sardines. The homeless flock here because of social programs. At least we're not a border town, though, because really, this is happening all across the US, from what I can see. That's what makes people want to run to the hills.

I used to come to Asheville in the 90's for the music scene. It was like a small Haight-Ashberry experience. Live shows, hallucinogenic drugs, drinking, hippies, and good times. When I returned in the later 2000's, it was different, like some of those same people were now harder drug addicts, homeless and panhandling. I still love the charm of Asheville, though.

Austin is about 10-15years ahead of Asheville when it comes to overgrowth. Can't totally compare them but a lot of the same problems. Lived in Austin my whole life so I have the same complaints as those in Asheville. And now I'm like it's too damn hot and too damn crowded and expensive here...and I feel guilty that I'm thinking of moving to a place that will just be annoyed at me for the same reasons I'm annoyed about here in Austin😂😅

Haha. Not so much- well, if your from Kansas, maybe it is.

All the $ comes from the outside. Not grown from within. Its basically being flipped. For lack of better words. Its actually started on a slow roll from 50+ years ago. IMHO. Ive been here 42yrs.

too much craft beer will only make you fat. I know. I would not pick a place to live based on craft beer. Having no craft beer would be a deal breaker, but you can only drink so much beer before it becomes a problem.

People are leaving because it's too far from the Outerbanks. It's such a long drive to the outerbanks where we all like to vacation.

I drove up to Asheville with my family one day because I loved it 20 years ago. The first thing we saw was a bunch of wealthy entitled white college kids protesting. We turned around and left without even stopping to eat or use the bathroom.

She seems quite happy the locals are leaving. Fill a town with rich people and then expect the peasants to serve your needs and wonder why they can’t afford 2000$ rent.

Got it, I used to go to these really cool art parties in peoples homes and they would have stages in the living room and I would go to abandoned buildings late at night-before I was a mother, ha ha and there would be hundreds of dancing party-goers enjoying the evening. We would flow from one musical event to a front porch for a pickin party to a street celebration of some sort, and we would see friendly faces everywhere and know most of them. I was absolutely surrounded by art life. And people living as art. In all art forms. I’m sure this still exists but it’s getting harder and harder for artists to be able to afford to be here with the freedom of expression that they once enjoyed considering the price of housing now.
