Excellent video! TO ALL NEW CHAM OWNERS - I’d like to share a bit about a recent experience I had with my panther keeping his eyes closed during the day. I had a very difficult time figuring out why as his husbandry was/is pretty spot on (my breeder was actually stumped, too). Two things in particular were wrong: 1. My UVB bulb fixture. If you read no other part of my comment, *please at least read this!* You absolutely, positively want to be sure that you have the CORRECT light fixture to use your linear UVB bulb with - T5 HO with a reflector (I’d also recommend a Solarmeter 6.5 for SURE. Had I purchased a solarmeter to begin with, I could have avoided this problem entirely). I was using a combination T5 fixture, meaning that one fixture housed both my panther’s Arcadia 6% for UVB and a T5 6500k daylight bulb for plants. Using a combination fixture like this is not an issue in and of itself, but do be sure that your fixture comes with a reflector for each individual bulb you can put in it. My cham’s fixture shared a single reflector with both the UVB bulb the daylight plant bulb, lessening UV output. Had I continued using the thing, my chameleon probably would have developed MDB. Fortunately, this issue was pointed out to me by a very kind and experienced regular over at the chameleon forums, and I replaced the combo fixture I was using with this one: www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Fluorescent-Fixture-Indoor-Plants/dp/B07RTVD1HJ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Vivosun+t5+ho+dual&qid=1633940537&sr=8-5 Vivosun offers multi T5 fixtures with reflectors for each bulb. You can do what the OP has done with her cham cages - use one T5 fixture for UVB and a different T5 fixture or LEDs for the plant lighting (whatever works best for you! I just brought it up here in case anyone else new to chameleons decides to use a combination fixture like I did). I mentioned this earlier, but this would definitely be where the solarmeter 6.5 comes in handy (your cham needs a level 3 UVI at basking to ensure its body can synthesize D3 properly. The solarmeter 6.5 shows you at each point of your chameleon’s cage - highest, middle, lowest - what the UV index is). 2. Incorrect supplementation, particularly vitamin A. Neptune’s mom *really* means it when she says that this is your chameleon’s health, and you need to stay on top of dusting feeders with the proper amount of calcium/D3/vitamins. I was using Rep-cal Herptivite for my panther’s multivitamin (I’d used it for 2 months, in fact).. this ended up being a problem as REP-CAL HERPTIVITE DOES NOT CONTAIN PREFORMED VITAMIN A (preformed A is known as the active form of the vitamin, meaning your body can use it as-is). There has been a long debate on whether or not chameleons can convert beta carotene into preformed vitamin A like we can, which is crucial for eye health. That same debate has yet to prove anything one way or the other, so play it safe. Err on the side of caution and always, always ALWAYS assume that using a supplement with beta carotene will not be sufficient. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not use a multivitamin with beta carotene instead of preformed A. I ditched the Herptivite and am now using Repashy Calcium Plus LoD for both my chameleon’s preformed vitamin A and d3. Reptivite with or without D3 is a great supplement for Preformed A, too! It did take some time, but between the corrections made to my cham’s lighting and supplements, it would appear as though his eye issues are improving. Not noticing closed eyes during the day anymore.

@@farmhouseontherock I’m actually not sure. I probably wouldn’t try it. For one, I wouldn’t expect the foil to reflect properly. I also can’t imagine it’s safe to add anything to a light fixture that didn’t already come with it, especially on the inside where the bulb is housed. I *know* the fixtures can be so expensive, but if yours only has one reflector (but can hold two T5 bulbs), I’d only use the ONE Arcadia 6%/Reptisun 5.0 UVB bulb in it. If the fixture has NO reflector, I would only use it for a T5 6500 K plant light. Plant lighting is important (for plant health, not necessarily the chameleon’s), but what you’re really going to need is a T5 strip light with a reflector. The reflector in a T5 HO fixture is really helpful for achieving a 3.0 UV index, which is where you’ll need it to be at the top of your cage. Here’s one of the cheaper fixtures on Amazon. @@farmhouseontherock sorry forgot to add - I’ve been keeping panther chameleons (successfully) for about three years now. Not nearly as long as Neptune’s mom, but over time I’ve purchased a lot of T5 fixtures. It’s been my experience that all T5 HO fixtures have reflectors, so yours *probably* does too. Definitely still check when you can to be sure. I should probably edit my original comment to state the following: if you have a dual T5 HO fixture (dual as in, it can hold two strip lights) but it only has one reflector, you can still safely use it. But *only* use it for your UVB bulb, don’t use it for plant lighting as well. That way your fixture reflects the UV rays properly and isn’t impeded by the plant light. I definitely prefer to have a plant light, plants do really well under it and last way longer. That said, you can probably get by with minimal or no plant lighting if you use only pothos plants in your cage. They’re low light plants and tend to be really hardy. I use exclusively pothos in my cages nowadays. They’re what I’ve had the best luck with and provide a lot of coverage/vines for climbing

It really is crazy how big of a difference properly supplementing your chameleon can be. I recently adopted a 3 month old panther chameleon. When he was introduced to his new enclosure, I noticed not only consistent eye closing, but he continually tried to chew on the wood of the branches withing his enclosure. After about a month of a set supplement schedule, his eye problems have vanished and he no longer chews on the branches. He's 4 months old now and is doing great! Great video!

I just had a power outage the other day, (only for 2 hours) my veiled chameleon was very angry, he hung upside and closed his eyes and fell asleep. I woke him up gently when the power got back on, he's all good now, was pretty scary to see during the day.

my chameleon started closing his eyes during the day. i wasn’t sure what it was and i thought it was a respiratory infection so my dad gave him to somebody at his work. the guy at his work was very educated on reptiles and had many of his own at home. he said he would take it to a vet or find a cure himself. turns out having a chameleon just wasn’t for me 🤍

The Veiled chameleon I brought yesterday kept closing her eyes, so I was nervous and handled her more and washed them with saline solution. ㅜㅜ It was because of stress ㅜㅜ because of me!!!!! The chameleon beginner learned many things..!

My jackson does this i took him to the vet and they said he’s perfectly healthy.Not sure if it’s different with jacksons or not because he eats drinks and climbs around .i feel he’s super happy

My girl died the other day. Miss her. :'(. She was so freindly and woke me up in the morning by walking over to my bed. please act quickly, even for the smallest detailes. "like closed eyes. My brother’s veiled Chameleon actually developed an eye infection in one eye, that’s why its eye would be closed. He had all the proper set up with his enclosure and was fed properly. He had to be given medicine from the vet.

Eye infections are definitely a possibility as well! In that case the vet is the best option so your brother did a great job.

Great video! I noticed in the video there was some water dripping in your cham's cage at a fast rate-- is there a general rule of how fast a dripper should drip, or is any speed ok? Also, is it possible for a chameleon to aspirate water if they're drinking it at their own will?

Ideally you want a slow, consistent drip but it is not an exact science. A chameleon should be able to stay hydrated through misting and night time fogging. I have not heard of a chameleon aspirating on their own but doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

@@NeptunetheChameleon my chameleon started to close one eye for about 2 seconds and sometimes blinking with both his eyes, he is still moving about a lot and acting the same but I am not sure what it is that’s wrong with him please help .

My chameleon is usually very active, especially for a chameleon, now lately he's been closing one or two of his eyes while sitting at the back of the cage and hisses or bites when interacted with. He almost died before a few months prior to this new behavior where he was demonstrating the exact same behaviours. My question is why he has become much less social and more distant and defensive

What size bulb do you recommend for heating? I’ve seen some people say 60 all the way up to 100. I’ve going to get a baby so I don’t want to over heat them. What would be a good starting point.

It depends on how your enclosure is set up. I’d start with a 60-75W.

Glad I came across this video, I just 'adopted' a female panther and she is so unwell. I think she'll make it, I've stepped in and I'm doing what I can until she goes to the vet (vets appt booked) but there's severe dehydration, one constantly closed/flat eye and one healthy but 'majority of the time closed' eye......and she's just skin and bone :( I have other panthers but this is the worst case I've seen. I have recently found your channel and love watching your videos. I'm so happy to be in a hobby where we are constantly learning and evolving. Keep up the great work!

Is it common for then to stretch their heads up if basking. Just got my Jackson almost 2 weeks ago and I have seen him do this twice but onlyin his basking spot. Also what would be the best way to determine age. He was listed as a juvenile but not a age rage. He was eating every day for me but now he hasn't eaten for almost 2 days, so yesterday and today.

My chameleon had late stages if mbd. He was a rescue. His mbd got so bad that he couldn't open his mouth so I had to give him food and water by hand for the last 3 years he had lots of stress because of that and we thought of putting down sometimes but afternit got worse he would get better. But this time he was unable to open. His eyes and he was at the bottom of his cage wich was ordinary for him but we discosed taking him to the vet the next day but that night he died and I thought mabby he was just limp or needed heat so I left him alone but he was still in the same position in the morning. He was dead. He lived 5-6 years. We adopted him from a family member who rescued him. It was unsure if he was 2 or 3 at the time. He had a good life and loved this fake leaf that he had had since he was a baby.

help me! my chameleon seems healthy, eats well, mistking, full planted enclosure, t5 ho linear uvb, basically everything right in term of set up. but he is closing his eyes during mid day. is he doing it because the lights are too strong or because he is sick?

Like I said in the video, you’ll have to be a bit of a detective to figure out what’s going on with your chameleon. I’d suggest making sure their care is correct and if you don’t see improvements, I’d take them to a reptile vet.

I feed my Chameleon BSFL. He's been sleeping a lot during the day and his eyes are closed. I've read that BSFL are highly nutricious; but the two things the Chameleon doesn't get from eating them are Vitamin A and Vitamin D3. If I gut load the BSFL with Carrots, will he get enough Vitamin A from their food? The Vet gave me some Vitamin A liquid to supplement him to help him recover. He's been hanging upside down at the top of the enclosure; I read that this is how they try to absorb more light. So, I've ordered a UVB light meter. But I also bought a new UVB lightbulb and plugged it in, just incase the current bulb is no longer emitting UVB. I'm pretty sure the problem is Vitamin A deficiency. I'll know for sure when my light meter arrives. I've read that if a chameleon becomes deficient in Vitamin A, he can't open his eyes. It's not necessarily because he's stressed. Anyways, pray for Pierre that he has a full recovery and that his owner (me) learns everything he needs to stay healthy. I got him in the Spring and he's been doing great for about 6 months. So this was unexpected.

Quick question! I have a chameleon that I rescued, I built my cage according to your building cage video, and my little guy is doing so much better now. However, when I took him in, he was in a tiny, tiny enclosure, sharing it with two geckos and a frog, and he was completely sick. I took him to the vet, he got care, and he is doing way better overall, except for his eyes. I had to hand feed him for a long time because he was so sick he won't eat, so now that I want him to start eating out of a cup, he won't, so I keep hand feeding him because he won't eat otherwise and also his eyes are closed. With this being said, I don't know if I'm doing the right thing by handling and possibly making him more stressed out or if I should not intervene and let him eat whenever he wants and leave the cup there with the bugs forever... Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Did you have any other recommendations on what I should do? Thank you so much!

My chameleon went to sleep an hour before lights went off. It was super hot today and his cage was 86 degrees so i didnt turn on his heat and i put a fan in his room. But the coolest i was able to get him was 81 degrees. is this normal because he was hot or is something wrong with him?

Can I light a candle in the same room as the chameleon?

I have a 30×18×30 enclosure and an 18" t 5.o HO bulb. There's plenty of branches and live plants for cover..my question is if my uvb is too close to the basking area, it's about 5 inches away from him when he's perched there. and right next to that is a heat bulb that doesn't get over 90 degrees according to thermometer. I haven't really noticed my chams eyes closed, but should I put the uvb higher? Im also planning to get a longer uvb so the light is going corner to corner and not front to back how it is now. Thank you!

I would suggest getting a larger enclosure ASAP and raising your UVB so that it is 48" inches from the bottom of the enclosure until you can get a new cage. An ideal basking temperature would be 80-85F :)

Having lifted both basking and uvb a couple inches( planning to buy hooks so I can hang the lights from my ceiling) he seems to be liking that better. Thank you for the videos you do. Very informative. Pepito was bought as an impulse buy from my husband😔 but I'm the one caring for him. Im glad you share your passion for these critters so newbies like me can do our best. That does sound worrying. Im not as professional or know as much but I recommend to not make quick movements, dont look directly in their eyes and I like going on my knees when im doing anything in her cage so shes higher up than me? Im not sure if that helps sorry! :,)

Im pretty sure when arcadia gives out their numbers on uvb. That is without mesh. You loose up to 40-60% of your uvb output. So thats why alot of of people go with the 12% because of the loss through mesh. All mesh is different and will either let more or less through so its case by case basis.

The bulb recommendations I make for a chameleon are already factoring in the UVB loss from the screen top on the enclosure. Plenty of UVB on a T5 6% gets through a standard screen enclosure and provides adequate levels. @@NeptunetheChameleon thanks so much. I just went through mental hell trying to make the right decision for my 2 boys in 4x2x2s so i went with 12% because i was convinced to do so. But i have wrapped the bulb in mesh to cut that in 1/2 before it hits the mesh of the cage

A little of topic but, can chameleons eat rose petals? Are they harmless ? Are they edible?

I have never heard of anyone trying to feed their chameleon rose petals so I have no idea. I wouldn’t advise it.

I brought my 9 month old male panther chameleon home a few days ago and he keeps gnawing on the large stones that I have in my pots and I will cover them with screen but the breeder I got him from wan’t the best. Also there is a little bit of stuck shed on his head and I don’t really know how to get it off. Thank you

Not sure what I can advise about the rocks other than making sure they are not small enough for him to potentially eat and making sure your supplements are correct. As far as the shed goes, as long as it is not restricting anything or cutting off circulation, then I would leave it be. It will come off in time.

It should be 48” above the bottom of the enclosure since the correct enclosure size and safe UVB levels are 48” tall.

Hey so my female veiled chameleon just went through a shed about 2 weeks ago ever since she got done completely shedding her eye looks like she has shed stuck, her eye is open but it’s not bulged out like there eyes are she can’t fully turn her one eye and idk what to do the vet near me (the only one that sees chameleons can’t get her in for a month! Can I do anything to help?

My chameleon is almost three. He’s never had health issue but two weeks ago his left eye got super swollen. I immediately called the breeder we got him from and told us our light was too old so we got a new light and I put a couple drops of apple cider vinegar in his water. Within two days the swelling went down to normal. Now the same eye is a little sunkin in. I have an appt with the vet for him but not for another 10 days. I’m worried. Advice?

I have a young chameleon and he’s been so good, but out of nowhere he started closing his eyes and I don’t know what to do, he won’t eat but I figured out how to give him water :( do you have any tips on how to feed him or make him open his eyes?

I'd first make sure your UVB and supplements are correct. Then I would take them to a vet :)

Mine did this up until I changed the light bulb too hot he wasn’t happy and after he’s much happier I’m a new owner so I knew how fast to react once I saw the eyes closed but yes I did also add vitamin A for him and he’s happy 😃

If a vitamin A deficiency seems to be the problem, do you still only supplement 2x's a month?

Vets can give something that works as a Vitamin A booster.

I have a veild chameleon and I will hold him at night with the lights off and he will go into a sleep position so is it a different thing

As I said in the video I would not hold your chameleon at night and when they should be starting to get ready for bed.

My Jackson’s Cham has been keeping his right eye closed. I took him to the vet and got eye drops to cleanse his eye and 7 rounds of subcutaneous antibiotic injections (mild broad spectrum). I do realize that I have to 10.0 and not the 5.0 UVB bulbs so those will be getting changed out.

@@tattd_snw_wht how long was he closing his right eye? My panther has been doing this for the past week. I took him to the vet and they gave me eye drops for him as well as 3 injections some vitamins, electrolytes and calcium. It’s been 2 days of giving him eye drops but he seems to be closing his right eye still. It appears to be less then before but I’m not sure. I hope he’s alright man.

i recently got a baby veiled and i’ve tried handling him and he falls asleep a lot. based off what i heard in your video I shouldn’t be handling them at all and just let him get used to his environment, is this correct?

my chameleon was doing great, acting completely fine, eating well, she was well hydrated. but one afternoon I went to check on her and her eyes were sunken in and shut. the next morning I found her dead at the bottom of her cage. still don't know what happened. not saying that every time a Chams eyes are shut means it's going to die, but it definitely is not a good sign.

My male veiled is maybe 2 months old had him for 3 weeks going on 4 and recently he’s been keeping his left eye closed and rubbing it on the vines I have no idea what’s wrong or what to do 😩

I hope someone here can give me some advice. I am going to be taking in a 1 year old veiled chameleon male who's eyes have been possibly damaged from uvb bulb being too close. The lady said she has been having to kinda force feed him cuz he can't see his food (she said when she waters him and he's drinking she is able to skip 1 meal worm in his mouth during the drinking and he gobbles it down. She said she does this every 3 days.) I am getting him in a couple days and will be taking him in to my reptile vet. She posted on a fb post for anyone with experience can have him for free with his 38" tall, 15" floor space all mesh enclosure, his pathos plant and his uvb. No one has been able to take him in yet and I told her I would take him since there is no one who has chameleons available. I have experience with many animals including reptiles. I am going to get a basking bulb b4 he gets here and try to find some natural vines, as he won't have any when he arrives. With all this in mind, what wattage basking bulb should I use for his 38" tall, 15" floor space mesh enclosure (I am in northeast Kansas weather,) would a zilla t8 15 watt uvb be OK to use for a short time (if yes then how high up off the enclosure should it be,) and what should I use to safely transport him in to my vet who is 10 minutes away? Thank you to anyone who can help!

So our chameleon... Most of the time he is good,he is about 2-3 months now bought him at 6 weeks. Um he has plenty of plants and stalks to climb ,it dose take us a min to find him. he drinks and definitely eats about 5-7 crickets a day ,we put vitamin A on a banana for the crickets to eat with the white powder,we also put vitamin A in his water very little and we spray his cage constantly, he likes to climb up in the light his cage is always 80 ,and again he dose open both his eyes,but sometimes he just finds a spot and chills with his eyes closed,if we walk up they will pop open. But it's weird how he shows all these good signs but still looks like he wants to nap sometimes. But chameleons don't nap thoe??? Hes always a bright green. So idk is eyes closeing always always A bad sign?

The advice in this video applies to 1 eye as well.

So I’ve had my chameleon for a couple weeks, my sister gave him to me, and I wish I found these way sooner I feel like such a bad owner cause I thought I knew what I was doing but I didn’t and now my chameleon is stressed and keeps falling asleep on my hand I really hope he doesn’t go

I just got him a month ago( for Christmas)at first I put him with my anole and his 10×20 tank for that month but I notice that his eyes are getting smaller and I had his heat lamp and uvb light 10 to 15 inches up high so I wouldn't affect his eyes but I guess that made it worse since now his eyes are all tiny like he can't open his eyes I just change him to a 30 inch tank and still nothing I've even given him eye drops and nothing he can't open his eyes anymore. You think I should go to the vet or if there something I can do for him?

All this information is true for all chameleon species. I would put him into his own enclosure ASAP. Chameleons do not do well with cohabitating with other chameleons or species. He will also need a bigger enclosure. I would seek out vet treatment.

Her eyes are still closed how much time do I give her😢? For her to move around or see if she will move. Uv is directly on her moved the heat a little away, should I still mist the habitat?

Yes it is bad and that’s the incorrect UVB bulb. I’d suggest watching my videos around UVB, supplements, cage builds, etc to make sure your care is correct which should help improve their eye issues.

Yes. Under those circumstances that would be a sign that the chameleon's body is starting to shut down and they need to be moved to warmer conditions.

Yup very true!! That’s why it’s so important to use a multivitamin that has preformed Vitamin A.

I would first make sure his care is correct (UVB, supplements, etc). If he is a rescue then it is likely he wasn't taken care of properly which means it will take time for the correct care to make positive changes. I won't be able to be much help beyond that since a vet is really the only other option if the eye is as bad as you say it is. Pictures can be sent to me on Instagram @neptunethechameleon.

Or a high wattage UVB bulb like a 12% or 14%.

How is it too much when the real sun isn’t an issue?

In the wild the UVB levels aren’t nearly as strong/concentrated and the chams have places to hide, overcast weather, etc.
