For decades, I wore Sperry Top Siders in brown almost every day from Spring to Fall. No socks, of course. I wore them to Walt Disney World for an entire week without discomfort. The key to success in wearing boat shoes is to NEVER wear new ones for more than a couple of hours at a stretch until they're "broken in" to the shape of your feet. For this reason, I often had three identical pair in my closet: one new pair I was slowly breaking in, one pair that were broken in and not looking "well worn", and one pair that were broken in that looked very worn that I'd use when I paint. Painting while wearing boat shoes is great, since they are non-slip and it's usually fairly easy to clean drops of paint off your ankles. When you step on paint drops, the flat bottom squishes the paint flat, allowing it to dry quickly. If you paint in sneakers, the aggressive tread design holds the paint and you end up tracking it from place to place.

Great video! I’m from a northeastern port town, and many of us wear topsiders all year round. No socks in spring/summer, and then wool socks in the fall and winter. Our Dad’s and Uncles wore them with everything shy of a suit. Paired with a matching braided belt you look squared away in most situations. Your take on these classics is spot on! Love the content.

Great video! I appreciate the way you bring out the history in your videos. I didn't embrace the preppy aesthetic back in the 80s, but I bought my first ever pair of Sperry Top Siders last summer and they are becoming one my my go-to shoes for causal, pool/beach wear. Straighten out your boy Aaron! Seriously, y'all should do a meet up in Atlanta and maybe even bring in Jeff the Style OG.

I learned a lot of things being in the Navy, and our influence on fashion was of course part of that. Been wearing Sperry topsiders since as my default summer shoe. Never wore it with socks and my wife was definitely not happy about that, so make sure to have at least two pairs you can rotate out on. And of course, some deodorizer lol

I have a pair of _"Boat Shoes"_ and they are comfortable and when walking on gravel, one doesn't really notice it! My are the same colour with three pairs of eyes and original laces! Also they are *Goodyear Welted* as there is stitching between the sole and upper! I would highly recommend them, for everyday _"after work"_ casual with a polo-shirt and jeans!

About 15 or so years ago, Sperry made a shoe called the "Waterline". They were a little bit clunky, but the sole had unbelievable grip. I put them to the test several times when I visited Acadia Natl. Park in Maine. The rocky coastline could be treacherous, especially when wet. I did a lot of photography on my trips there, and never worried about slipping into an angry sea. Sperry knows what they're doing when it comes to a wet environment.

I have a pair that has the "crochet " look where it looks like they were woven out of leather rope. I wear them in the summer with shorts & a nautical themed shirt like one with a graphic design of a shark on it or a blue polo shirt. I have worn them without socks with a sprinkle of deodorant powder in the shoes & a deodorant spray on my feet but l found that my feet still sweat & feel uncomfortable, so now I wear them with no show socks

I remember when I was a kid/teen in the 80's in Mexico City the Sperry top siders were very popular with Polo Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, shirts and pullover sweaters, all roll up sleeves and pop up collars, with chinos or denim like Guess jeans with leather in the back above the back pockets, and Ray-Ban wayfarer sunglasses or Top Gun aviators. Wearing Polo Green fragrance or Drakkar Noir.

perfect timing! I just recently re-discovered my Sperrys from my highschool days, and turns out they were in great condition (minus a little molding inside bc I never wore socks with it *oops* ). so I cleaned, balmed, polished it, and voila! they're perfect for business casual looks! one thing though: trying to tie these shoelaces are a PAIN. I kinda regret untying them while cleaning. they're very thick and doesn't fold easily like normal laces. they can't comfortably be tucked in either. I just wished I knew how the factory people managed to tie them so perfectly.

They look great and a no-mark sole works awesome for going into clients homes, Damn comfortable yet they start to stink day-in day-out and the inner sole wears before the outer sole does. Whats a good way to keep down the stink and inner wear?

South Carolina native here, specifically from downtown Charleston born in the early 70's & yes growing up in the 80's & even still today when-ever I go home to visit family, Sperry & Sebago boat shoe's are on people's feet all over town. It's like the signature shoe of the city for everyone regardless of ethnicity. It's crazy because I was not really a fan of them until I saw a classmate with a pair of Gold Cup Sperry Top Siders on in Junior High along with another popular brand of clothing a lot of Carolinians wear called Duck Head. I remember asking for a pair for Christmas back then BUT I guess they were too pricey & mom said no BUT as soon as I was grown & on my own, I remember the first time I bought myself a pair of Sperry Gold Cup Top Siders while on assignment in Savannah Georgia, I actually bought 2 pairs that day, still have one of them. I've been a huge fan of Sperry boat shoes for over 30 years now & I have probably as many pairs of them as these sneakerhead people have Jordan's. Where I am going & what I am doing that day is how I make the decision as to whether or not to wear socks, they are some of the best shoes I have ever owned & i'm gonna have it in my will to have a pair of Top Siders on my feet when I am gone....

The Thursday Boot version with a dark sole and laces that don't require tieing are really a camp moc which is a much better look and should be adopted by any man once they are out of college. The camp moc is far more versatile as it can be worn sockless in the summer with shorts or with a pair of heavy wool socks in the winter and it looks equally good either way.

Thank you Antonio for the wonderful video. Finally, some sartorial video stepping out of the herd mentality (as many so-called sartorialists diss them as non-stylish choice). The thing is: they’re functional, serve the purpose, and practical, and that makes them my choice for many casual occasions, especially in the tropical countries. Function defines style, and posers don’t. Btw, I wear them with no sock.

I enjoyed the history of the shoe, but they're not for me. Side note, where is your shacket from? Thanks.

They do make Sperry deck shoes for women (I have a pair) and women do sail. I did notice you were leaning pretty hard on the MEN'S shoes here.

Hey Marine, Aaron always puts down boot shoes and should have worn a pair the day he slipped down the stairs, have you convinced him otherwise? I wear mine without socks. I use them as defacto house shoes and for washing the car. I also wear Sperry CVOs but with socks. Semper Fi Marine. PS, where is your son going to college?

There are so many videos on KZread saying, thatz Boat Shoes are an absolute nogo unless you are on a boat. If I remember right, even RMRS said so and now these shoes are again so stylish? I am a little confused...

Don't be. Trends come and go, taste is changing. It's the same with for example Alpha M and his stance on tight clothes etc. If you like the design - wear it. Don't try to look "stylish" too much

I never embraced the preppy mindset. Nor am I a nautical guy who spends time on the high seas. I owned a pair of brown top-siders back in the day, but I did not wear them all that often. And whereas I love the idea of being on boats, my vestibular system does not allow me to enjoy a ride on choppy waves. It's hard to feel stylish on 50 mg. of Dramamine. I do, however, like a good moc on dry land. OloKai (a great company, by the way) has a nice modern variation on the traditional boat shoe.

My mother was released from a slave labor camp in Cuba. She was on a boat coming to America to reunite with us. She ate some bad fish and she died…on the high seas!

Good video. Love the history but boat shoes have been out of style since around the mid 2010s. Penny loafers and even horse-bit loafers are way more popular these days.

No socks. Just moderately coat your feet with virgin unrefined coconut oil (anti bacterial so no smell left in shoe) and your golden (for leather shoes).

Some tend to prefer the trendy look, the choice of young people. I prefer the classic look so I have no issues with boat shoes.
