Why And How To Candle Your Eggs

It has been 6 days since we placed the eggs in the hatching machine. It is time for us to check which eggs are fertilized and which are not. We are using a simple LED light as a candling light.

Wow I could see them when you moved the camera back so you could focus on the eggs 😹 that was surprising I did not think I,would see it from that distance . I noticed the veins before the heart plus the air pocket I noticed was different to the unfertilised eggs. Thanks for sharing that it was something I have not seen done in almost 40 years when I had the chance to do this on the farm I stayed at when Mom remarried when I was almost 6 I had fun on the farm even learned to drive the tractor as well 😹😹😹 only down side is when I fell, out the low bedroom window right on top of a bed of stinging nettles not a pretty sight I can tell you😹😹😹

gr8 vid....instead of the tape on your light try using the cardboard center of a toilet paper roll....it wont let any light bleed out through it like i noticed the tape does.....its very flexible and forms a perfect "seal" around the egg....i use it on my flashlight when candling my eggs and it works like a charm especially on very dark colored eggs

I had to look this up, because I unfortunately candled incorrectly this morning, using a phone flashlight. 5 eggs were non viable of the 6 I tossed. The 6th had a fully developed chick in it, and chirped when I tossed it into the woods and it hit a tree root. Grabbed my 22 to put it out of whatever misery I put it in. Thanks for this video, it'll help me ensure it never happens again.

They're only a few days in so far but I believe so far there's only one I'm questioning on if it's viable. Which is good. I can't wait to see how they are this weekend! :D And yowza, that LED is great! My candler is 12+ years old. That bulb hasn't been changed ever. You shouldn't shake the egg like you do in the first candling, could shaker the embryo loose so to speak. If hatching rate from the incubator are low, that might be cause you've shook the eggs. And as a lady wrote, move the incubator to the let, so the table at the right side is free for you to put the frames on while candling.

Great videos, I am just learning about chicken husbandry and this is a valuable resource!! As for life only coming from life... In a short term view this is of course true... in one week a rock does not turn into a chicken... life took billions of years to emerge on Earth and has been evolving for billions of years since then. Human history is only a tiny speck of that and in an even tinier speck we can selectively breed and control the traits of species like chickens for our own particular needs. To me that is the stunning thing about life... it is adaptable, flexible, resilient.
