Why and how did the Ancient Greeks establish colonies?

Ойын-сауық

We continue our series of Ancient Greek history. This video is a brief introduction of the ancient Greek colonies, it focuses more on the motives of the Greeks rather then the history of specific colonies, which I will make videos about later down the line. If you like the content, please like and subscribe, it helps immensely. :)

About greeks and establishing colonies, i've once heard that the myth of Jason and the argonauts, was a tale that was meant to explain greek colonization around the Black Sea during the Bronze Age. That explains why Jason travels to the land of Colchis, aka Georgia, a place that was explored by mycenaean travelers before the collapse.

That is very interesting! The voyage of Odysseus is also closely associated with the colonies as it was believed that Sicily was the land of the cyclopes and that the strait of Messina was the place where the monsters Scylla and Harybdes lived.

@@historicaladventurevideos Indeed. Just shows us how much was lost after the collapse, and that the greeks had to "re-explore" lands they stopped visiting since a long time ago. Always fascinated by your videos, by the way.

Is ekklesia (assembly) used when Greek colonized other places. How did it work. I heard that men intermarried in order to integrate the native population.

Although this subject is not very well attested, we do know that some Greek colonies which were established either by Athens or the Ionian cities of Asia Minor (Miletus, Priene etc.) did use the Ekklesia as a form of government, at least after the 6th century B.C. However, the majority of the Greek colonies had the usual oligarchies of ancient Greek cities or aristocracies of powerful families. Tyrants were also very prominent in the colonies. A small minority of the colonies had a king or a basileus. Regarding intermarriage, you are absolutely correct. Be they Scythians, Sicilians, Celts, Lydians, the Greeks intermarried with all the neighbouring peoples of their cities.

Nicely done. Only objection that you use the erasmian fallacy.

Thank you! I don't actually support the erasmian pronunciation, I'm just mostly using an English accent of Greek on my videos because I think that it's more understandable for the majority of people, since English is the common universal language nowdays. I also do the same for Latin.

@@historicaladventurevideos Maybe that was the reason in first place, to make it easier? But I am not sure it helped anyone in the long term. Let me show you and others this video that points towards a book I just watched today, with some very strong argument against the erasmian theory. It is an hourly presentation and very interesting. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHetvMuMoryZaLg.html
