Why Amsterdam Airport Is So Busy (Even With little Population)

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is among the busiest airport in the world, but the city that it is in, Amsterdam is not even in the top 10 most populated cities in Europe, yet the airport manage to have millions of passengers every year competing with massive cities like London and Paris.

Used to fly via AMS and its a great airport for traveling. This video has a few misses. First Netherlands is in Schengen and many people outside Amsterdam will go to other countries to fly such as Brussels. Next as part of KLM is their partnership with Delta airlines. Delta has turned Amsterdam into a massive hub and has flights to Amsterdam throughout the US. Given its geography Amsterdam is a great connecting airport for North American travelers going to Europe, Africa, and even certain parts of Asia.

Many aspects are missing.... it has very good train connection means that many people even from Belgium or Germany are going here to depart/arrive... Netherlands has a very well established international conference infrastructure. There are sometimes corporate conferences/trainings with hundreds of participants. The Netherlands is a very busy international business hub, many companies have European HQ here and business people travel a lot to here/ from here...

Exactly. De Randstad is a metropolitan area which covers (most of) the western part of the country. For the rest of the country, it depends which airport is closer. It’s sometimes more convenient to either travel to Brussels or the airports near Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn. The video makes it sound like Amsterdam is The Hub for The Netherlands and that’s simply not true for various reasons.

I went to Europe on a trip in high school. We flew into Gatwick, south of London. I had no idea it existed until I got there. A few days in London, then by bus to Paris and then on to Amsterdam. So all three cities. And we flew out of Schiphol. Amsterdam is great! It has a real small town, countryside feel. Another thing you overlooked is the days of the Dutch Empire. All of the Dutch colonies around the world led to the start of KLM. And of course, the VOC. The Dutch East India company. And Royal Dutch Shell. For a "small country" the Netherlands has a worldwide presence. Like France and Britain and (UGH!) America. Here where I live on the East Coast of Canada there was a KLM ticket office. Amsterdam to Toronto and the return flight was Toronto-Halifax-Amsterdam. To load seafood on the return was the story. It was like that for a few years but they closed the KLM office here. I'm bummed about that.

The map doesn’t show all the London airports, Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stanstead and Luton. That’s a significant factor in the South East of England. However as many long distance flights go from Heathrow thats often the option for many UK travelers. But Heathrow has poor public transport access. There’s no direct access by rail other than from the capital. And that is what Schiphol gets right with its rail connections. And that why people outside of London often connect on KLM City Hopper to Schiphol. It’s quicker and cheaper than UK rail. Much as i like the single terminal concept at Schiphol there has to be limitations to its growth. There is already a lack of gates with many short haul KLM flights going from the Fokker Farm. Although KLM manage it reasonably well, it’s hardly ideal.

Not everything you said in this video is correct. The Netherlands has 5 commercial airport which serve passenger aircraft. One of them is actually in Groningen/Drenthe, called Groningen Eelde Airport. But since Amsterdam Schiphol has most intercontinental flights for the Netherlands, it serves as the intercontinental hub. All the other airports do have international flights (not domestic flights as you had called them) to other destinations in Europe, mainly served by low-budget airlines such as Transavia, Ryanair and Easyjet, but also by charter airlines such as TUI and Corendon.

So many things wrong in this video. Saying that there are no commercial airports in the north (waving at you Groningen Eelde) or further south (hello Maastricht Aachen Airport) is BS. Apart from that, a lot of people in the east and south travel to airports on the other side of the border because of good and direct connections (Weeze, Düsseldorf, Bonn-Cologne, Brussels and Brussels South) so they don't use Schiphol in the first place. Next to that the most important thing is missing; the reason why Schiphol is so busy is because of it's role in the intercontinantal hub-and-spoke principle thanks to mainly KLM and the partnerships it has struck in the past decades. This has made Schiphol a major base for flights in and out of Europe to other continents and therefor it is a huge transit airport. About 35-45% of the annual passenger numbers (71M) are having a transfer on Schiphol, so don't go in or out from the Netherlands. And that is what makes Schiphol such a major airport compared to it's humble location.

Not enough population? It's the most densely packed country in Europe (if you discount microstates such as Monaco and San Marino). Unfortunately the Dutch government agrees with you they think we can house many more millions. Schiphol is overrated, too big with one huge terminal instead of multiple terminals with a lightrail in between them which is more convenient as you don't have to walk so much.
