Why America Can't Let Boeing Fail

Boeing was once the most innovative and safest manufacturer of commercial jets in the world. Today, they are in the news almost daily with a new crisis, a part malfunctioning, improper maintenance, safety concerns.
That transformation can be traced back to a merger in 1997 between Boeing and rival McDonnel Douglas. The merger was supposed to put Boeing in a position of strength, absorbing their largest domestic rival, and let them dominate the market. Instead, it changed their culture from one run by engineers and designers, to one dictated by stock prices and executives.
This video tells the shocking story of how Boeing lost their way, and why their close relationship with the United States government means they can never truly be allowed to fail.

The gov ought to let Boeing fail, if it comes to that. Gov subsidies/bailout would just weaken the industry long-term, sending the message to US businesses that they can be grossly mismanaged and still survive.

It takes a generation to build a competent and experienced engineering group, and probably as long to change the corporate culture. Boeing has a steep hill to climb, but it's somewhat comforting to see more accountability and less hubris.

If Boeing still want to exist, about, let say, 10 to 15 years, they will HAVE to go back to who they were: A company were QUALITY and SAFETY come FIRST!!! Not SECOND!!! If they continue this way, they will finally go down, because more and more deadly accidents WILL happen! It's not IF it will happen, but WHEN it will happen. Period.

US manufacturers don’t care about quality, profitability more important. They sit in meetings half the day dreaming up ways to cut costs. They haven’t figured out that empowering the workers and giving them the tools makes the organization more profitable.

Deregulation has nothing to do this. It is a wrong conclusion to make. The same lack of quality has not been seen in the airlines, nor at airbus, nor at other plane manufacturers. This is a Boeing specific issue. Actually deregulation saved millions of lives through lower fares and increased competition in the industry.

That's a great point. The point we were trying to make is more so that deregulation changed how the industry worked, which led to the Boeing/MD merger and that led Boeing to where it is today.
