    Oh my goodness, this is EXACTLY what I went through after quitting alcohol. The exact same symptoms. It started with waking at 3am one night experiencing an extreme panic attack, like someone holding a plastic bag over my head suffocating me while also holding a taser to my central nervous system. Also, it was much worse at night. I could only sleep during the day. I think I slept 6 hours total in about 2 weeks. I thought I was going insane. I couldn't stand in a shower or even be indoors because the walls would close in on me. I walked 17 miles in one night. Fortunately it got better but I couldn't imagine going a full year in that state. I'll never touch alcohol again that's for sure... scared straight. Anxiety disorder is a nightmare. Exercise really helps me too. Vigorous exercise daily. I also take some supplements now like 5-HTP, L-Theanine, Magnesium, GABA, Ashwagandha, Tumeric and B vitamins that stimulate serotonin, dopamine. They really help a lot without needing to be on pharmaceuticals which I really don't want to be on for life.

    Hello Shaun, I’m a 15 year old suffering from DR, I started feeling this way at the age of 13 due to a bad car accident. It’s a off and on thing, some days I’ll feel excellent, and other days not so good like I’m a insane person. I need help controlling these feelings, I always watch your videos to help me realize I’m not alone and it’s a complete normal feeling.

    Hey Dylan, thanks for your comment. Firstly, please make sure that you’re speaking to your parents about what’s happening. It’s very important that they know what’s going on. Secondly, I know DP can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you. You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DP 👍

    You're going to be okay. I had this when I was 15 after smoking synthetic marijuana. I'm 26 now and it gets better. You learn how to manage it and it eventually goes away on its own. But it's important to take care of yourself and eat healthy foods as well as working out. Like I can't stress this enough, eating healthy is paramount. But you'll feel a lot better.

    I first bought the DP manual back in 2018, and it's been a huge help! Not to discourage anyone, i've been dp-free for about 2,5 years on end. But i always find myself coming back to this video. Just because i think consistency is a big one. I'm in a relapse right now, which are always scary because you thought you were ''cured''. And even though i have the tools, i always have to sit and think to myself, what changed? i had some stressors in the past months but i've slowly slipped more and more alcohol in my life to deal with it. From a couple of drinks in the weekend to basically 2/3 beers every day at some point. I think the take-away here is that even though you're recovered, treat your DP like it's always there in a way. Continue to live healthy and don't slip up, make it a habit. Because it can't be a coincidence that all of the times i've ''relapsed'' inbetween 2018 and now have always been in periods of my life when alcohol intake is high, and healthy ways of living and excersise are at an all time low. Thanks Sean for helping me through these years, in a bit of a low spot right now. but i've given up drinking for a while as of last week and i'm sure i'll beat this ''relapse'' once again. Also thank you for making this video in particular, the connection inbetween the negatives of alcohol and how it affects your DP/DR is'nt talked about as much as it should in the DP community!

    I had my 3rd Dr/dp attack today. It was like my brain was on fire, like an exploding psychology. Everything felt like a profound realization, like an acid trip without the visuals. My mom was driving to the hospital and I had this extreme urge to do something that would get us both killed like turn her steering wheel, so I held onto the hand holds like I life depended on it I didn't know who I was, everything was real and fake at the same time, but I also was able to narrate what was going on. I felt like a child and my mother was answering ally questions like I was a baby. I felt innocent, born new and the most terror I've ever experienced ever.

  • @Dpmanual

    @Dpmanual

    Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual. And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

I never drink to the point of a hangover, but almost everytime I drink alcohol it increases my derealization (even after a few sips). I get what you're saying about alcohol reducing anxiety, especially in social situations. This is what makes it so difficult for me. Going out can improve my dpdr and alcohol helps me with socializing, but it also increases dpdr :/

I think I suffer from DP since I have memory, when i was like 7/8 I experience DP when I had very strong emotions, expetially when I felt a lump in the throat. But then my anxiety led me to question me reality and my percetion everyday. But since I experience this syndrom its like my body get used to, yeah some days are bad or very bad but its ok. Alchol helped me a lot, yeah dont overdose maybe hahah, but at some boring and very stressful dinners with family and family friends i started to drink to feel dizzly, i love that sensation but its important to know our limit, self control is key, its very difficult because when those stressful situations, or parties, or just a couple drinks with friends i love that sensation, i feel like im officially ok. sorry if I made some errors or write boring stufs hahaha but finally after discovered this channel about six month ago and a community I also finally found someone who understands me, who won't trait me like a pycho so thanks to Shaun and thanks to this community I felt understood. Hi Nicole, it's a good idea to reduce your alcohol intake (and avoid hangovers completely) at least until you're 100% recovered. Remember that ultimately, DPDR is just a symptom of anxiety so when the symptoms vary, it's just your anxiety levels going up and down, and certain situations / environments can change them. I know it might seem difficult to believe but you actually have complete control over it 😊 Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website, starting with this one: www.dpmanual.com/about/depersonalization-definition-what-is-it/

I felt like some weird ghost/demon/creature was gonna jump out of the corners to get me . I was given a jab of diazepam and spent the weekend in hospital. The anxiety attacks continued for 2 years until I learned to master my mind and control my thoughts, the panic/anxiety attacks disappeared when I stopped anticipating them , and started ignoring them like they were just normal. Incredible video, wow. Since 17 (I’m 26 now), I have had pretty consistent feelings of dissociation. As far as the drinking, I feel grounded, no anxiety, relaxed, and dp is virtually gone, etc. However, the next day, after having 12 beers, I am completely spaced out, unbalanced, anxious, and just completely out of it. I feel like my mind just checks out. I’ve been heavily drinking every week for years-I’m trying to cut back and drink less. I find, however, that alcohol is really the only time I feel completely “grounded.” Side note, I’m going to Europe for a week on Monday; I’m slightly nervous because I know this foreign environment will cause feelings of dp. Any thoughts?

And to answer your question, I had the same fears of being in an unfamiliar place that pushed up my anxiety and DP levels too. What I did was go on shorter trips to expose myself to those situations and demonstrate to my brain that was nothing to be afraid of and no need for the anxiety to be there (and a bunch of other techniques too!) 😊

    Hey Viktor, thanks for your comment! 😊 I know DP can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. @@katerynakozachenko4779 Not covered in this video, but alcohol can actually have mild dissociative effects DURING the drinking, which I think is felt more prominently for some people than others (as our bodies react to alcohol slightly differently which is why some people have a different 'drunken' state than others). I've had anxiety with DR in the past, and now if i drink too much alcohol then the drunk (or even just tipsy) feeling can make me feel spaced out and can mimic previous DP/DR experiences. But it still comes down to that fear of "losing control" and the obsession many DP/DR sufferers have of craving a perfectly "normal" state of mind. Because before i ever had DP/DR i would never worry about this when drinking alcohol, and nowadays during periods of lower anxiety i find that i can allow myself to drink more and not worry too much about it. So learning to be more okay with not always holding on to 100% control will solve this. Also the philosophical questions you mention about reality i've had BIG TIME before - they actually turned in to the single worst symptom for me. Just here to say that no matter how intense those thoughts get, at some point in the future you'll look back and find it almost impossible to find them scary any longer. As Shaun says, it's all just anxiety.

I have been trying to leave off the use of nicotine for a long time now, but it’s hard. And I feel like my dp/dr kind of lingers when I use it. Sorry but depersonalisation (a type of dissociation) IS actually recognised as a possible symptom of alcohol DURING the time of drinking. We would never say that depersonalisation isn't a symptom of weed or ketamine, so why alcohol. Alcohol is a type of dissociative drug, which for some people (including me) can create spaced out feelings of detachment even without being drunk. Based on Shaun's discussions on alcohol, I don't think it is a symptom for him which is great. Like any symptom of any drug it's going to vary person to person. But I've seen enough people mention this now that I do think it's a slight flaw in Shaun's work not mentioning that is a consideration for SOME people. Personally when I was trying to recover from DP I abstained from alcohol for a time since it would bring back the DP sensations, but after a while I re-introduced it once my anxiety had gone down enough and I no longer automatically interpreted any slightly detached bodily sensations with panic. Having said all of this, everything Shaun says about the effect alcohol has on DP as a consequence of the hangover and increased anxiety AFTER drinking is also all true.

    I got my worst panic attack ever a couple years ago when I was on SSRI:s and abused alcohol at the same time. One night it just struck me out of nowhere. It literally took just seconds after that first sensation, and then it was off to the races. I completely lost grip of reality, felt completely out of my own body, didn't know who I was. I thought I had experienced bad panic attacks before, but that one was extreme. It lasted for hours upon hours. I tried talking an ice cold shower, put my fingers in my throat and threw up over and over, prayed to God. Eventually, when nothing worked and I started looking for ways to kill myself, I just took the longest walk at around 4 am in the morning to find a gas station that sold alcohol. I got ahold of a sixpack and just downed it one beer after the other until the panic finally let go and I passed out. I almost developed panic syndrome after that night. It was horrible.
