Why Airplanes Don't Have Shoulder Seat Belts But Cars Do

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There's almost no design for beauty in aviation. The wing location, round windows, waist seat belts. Why are all these things exactly that way? For example, why can’t you carry liquids on board? Why couldn't you use your phone on an airplane in the past? Why do landing gear tires not burst when landing?
And this one is my favorite: Is it true that hair and stubble grow faster on an airplane? The myth originated in the first half of the twentieth century. Soldiers noticed that their stubble had grown after the flight, hence the legend appeared. But this is not proven by scientists. So, fasten your seat belts. You’ll get answers to a lot of questions about planes.

SUMMARY:
- It’s better to stand in the leftmost line during registration. You’re likely to go faster because most people are right-handed and intuitively turn right.
- A plane can stay afloat from 10 minutes to 60 hours. It all depends on the model of the plane, weather conditions, and the pilot’s skills.
- White color best reflects the sun's rays and the aircraft body doesn't heat up. Also, the damage is best seen on white.
- Pilots easily control and land a plane if one of the engines stops working. The plane will just lean slightly to the side during the flight.
- When the plane gets into turbulence, it's tossed a bit in the air. The waist belt will simply hold you in place in case of a more severe shake.
- Even if lightning strikes, the passengers won't feel it. The entire aircraft is covered with an aluminum coating that conducts electric current but doesn't allow it inside the plane.
- Masks don't only fall out when the plane is falling, but when the air pressure changes too.
- If the aircraft windows were square, pressure would accumulate in the corners, possibly leading to damage.
- Passengers should get used to the darkness in case of an emergency landing at night. The lights are turned off so that they can easily navigate when leaving.
- The dirtiest place in the cabin is the tray table from which you eat. It has several times more bacteria than the toilet seat. Also, some passengers use this table to change diapers for their babies.
- The fact is that your taste buds change a little at high altitude. They become less sensitive to flavors.

As a long time pilot, 40+ years as a private, military and commercial pilot, I found this video painful to watch. It seems almost as if they just made up answers rather than bothering to do some research. There was usually some bit of truth to the answers but the answers were extremely simplistic, incomplete and often contradictory. Just some examples: 1.why are wings on commercial aircraft on the bottom? Well some passenger airliners have the engines on the bottom, some have them on top. Some cargo aircraft have the wings on top, some have them on the bottom. Some fighters have the wings in the middle, some have the wings on the top, some have the wi gs on the bottom, for a variety of reasons. 2. Why do the pilots and flight attendants and most private planes have lap and shoulder harnesses but passengers on commercial flight usually do not (except often in first and business class) because the airlines want to spend the least amount possible and want the least weight possible on safety gear. So it's clearly better to have a 4 way harness, as the pilots of most airliners and military aircraft wear, but most of the passengers just get the bare minimum lap belt. 3. Engines on the wing has been a thing since the first 707 airliners in the late 50s, not a new development that followed tail mounted engines. And there was no sudden drop in air fares when the the 727s, with their rear mounted engines, went out of service. Most business jets still use tail mounted engines, because they are quieter, but so do many smaller airliners. I could go on and on but the bottom line, simplistic, untrue, incomplete, and just plain made up answers posing as the real deal.

#15 ignores that modern phones don't disturb the plane controls even without airplane mode and that the instruments are now less sensitive to interference too. #16 contradicts the fact that there had already been movies playing in planes for a long time, and that we've been able to get TV on individual seats in some planes for years too (with the only key difference being that they can interrupt their signal in an emergency). And when asking why some wings are lower, he shows us a picture of them basically in the middle height.

The seatbelts are to keep passengers from falling out of their seats, not to safeguard passengers in a real accident. Notice the flight attendants have shoulder belts and the pilots have shoulder belts. On military aircraft, the crews wear shoulder belts. On civilian airliners, passengers would complain over comfort. If the belts were not properly adjusted, they would not be beneficial anyway.

It’s a lot harder to feel which direction and which way you are pointed towards in the air. You won’t notice. Believe it or not, if there is heavy clouds and you are pointed directly at the ground or inverted, you might not even notice until you leave the cloud layer.

Wing position doesn't really have too much of an affect on speed. High mounted wings are more stable which is why they are used on many lighter aircraft. Low mounted wings while less stable are better structurally for large wings. Many fighter aircraft have high or mid mounted wings to make up for the extremely unstable anhedral wings. It is not faster to have the wings in any specific position.

The small triangles on the wall are really a marking where pilots can view the wing to make sure they haven't collected ice over night. The landing gear indicators have been phased out and arent on any modern commercial aircraft anymore.
