It's more of a traditional thing for them, like clothes. They grew up only knowing that their head should be shaved. Even aang was shocked to wake up and find he had hair. And don't forget the air acolytes also shave their heads despite being non benders, and zaheer also shaved his head even before receiving airbending just because he admired the airbenders' philosophy and wanted to live by it.

Jinora does I believe, when she gets her tattoos. Could be that most opt not to until they feel ready to commit to the identity which would certainly be around that time. It is a more “modern” time of that world so there would be other social norms to consider. Even more so since they are rebuilding the old air nomad identity. They would be remixing old traditions to make a new version.

@@mentalrebllion1270 Granted that shaving her head for getting the tattoos seemed more or less necessary. Need a clear canvas to make the art per se. Then she grew it back, and I don’t think she had a traditional female air nomad hair cut(aka having the front kind of shaved or balded a bit more while keeping the back long), where iirc she grew it back just to her normal hair style. Kinda lame but, still, suppose she technically counts even if only for the purpose of the ceremony. Wish more air nomads did visibly shave their heads though.

As a bald man, I can tell you this is true.

Funny thing, hairs actually perform a sensory role for humans and other creatures. shaving the head is, if anything, going to make it harder to feel the air pressure changes.

Let's be real, its more about being able to proudly identify yourself as an airbender or air nomad, rather than "feeling the wind" which open hair would also be able to do. Edit: many down there act huffy puffy about it. I want to remind you that Aang hiding his arrow by his hair was shameful to him. And that cutting that hair again to reveal the arrow afterwards was a moment of pride and honor to him. Yes it's cultural identification.

Another aspect to consider is that while the female air benders do shave their hair initially, they later keep at least part of their hair longer. So no, it cannot be crucial in its function. It's a cultural choice of identification

@@Ken-ru6or I have shaved my hair and while I do "feel the wind" against my scalp that way, open hair, especially shorter hair, does the trick as well. Also, don't forget that the female air bender did have long hair and only shaved part of their head, which clearly shows it's not "crucial"

changes in the air are much more apparent with a bald head. I remember shaving my head bald for the first time and being amazed at how it felt like I could feel every slight change in direction of the wind, and even the slightest drafts indoors

I think if the earthbenders are also like the air nomads which is wise in that part, They can also train earthbending wearing blindfold so that they can feel more the ground/earth where they're standing so they'll also develop seismic ability just like Toph 🤔

actually hair is an important part of teh human body, the native americans used their long hair while hunting to feel slight changes in air pressure and wind directions.

I think that’s where it truly comes down to cultural influences…the Airbenders (or Air Nomads) are heavily inspired by Tibetan Buddhist Monks. Like the real monks of Tibet, they dress in colorful orange robes, they shave their heads, and they are vegetarian. Their practices ultimately have to do with their beliefs system, which is based off Tibetan Buddhism. They would likely grow some crops and/or forage for what’s available locally, but since they don’t eat meat, there would be no hunting.

My question is... Where did all these airbenders come from? I didn't watch Korra. Isn't Aang supposed to be the last one? Are all airbenders his grandkid?

Essentially Air benders fled during the time of them being wiped out, settled with the earth kingdoms people, had children who no longer held roots to their air nomad ancestry so the air nomads essentially died out, until the spirits gate opened and awakened latent air nomad dna

i think the reason why "her" and "over" sounded muted is because he said in the song "you're not coming back but i can't say it outloud". he acknowledges his lover left him for someone else but he juat can't belive it so he finds it hard to say "you love her" and "its over", but that would mean it was actually true (which it is). maybe im reading too much into it 😅

Works irl. When trying to find where leaks are in a house, you can feel the current if you're bald. I forget what the profession is. But they put a giant fan in one door. There's a device to check the airflow, but head does it too. A professional talked to us in one of my environmental courses.

It might also be Aang and Tenzin basing their understanding of Air Nomad culture on Aang's experiances as a monk. Aang was raised by monks and taught to be a monk before he went into the water/ice. How much of the air nomad culture survived the destruction? those who survived were integrated into other cultures/groups

However, the hair itself doesn't have nerves. The sensation you might perceive at the hair root is from the movement of the hair follicles and the skin around them, rather than the hair itself. I shaved my head a couple of years. it really is a different feeling when you feel stuff like wind on your head or water from showering. not the same when you have wind through your hair. In the beginning I got shivers down my spine when I felt those breezes on the top of my skull.

Actually, it's more likely that shaving your head makes you more aerodynamic. Due to being airbenders, this would be important for controlling the air around themselves more fluidly.
