Why Accessibility in Sports is Important

Today I wanted to chat about my complicated relationship with sports. Why I feel that way, what sports I love and they this should matter to you too and why accessibility in sports is so important.

I guess I’m just naive, but it baffles me that several adults thought. “Oh look, a child with *literally no legs*. We shall make him do sports!”

In another one of your videos I told you about my grandaughter who has no legs. She does good in school but her favorite is gym because our coach/gym teacher let's her out of her wheelchair and let's her be herself. He adapts thing help her. He also doesn't baby her. If they get in mischief and have to run laps around the gym she runs with the rest of them. It's easier for him to make sure she is a part of things because it's a tiny school of 325 students pre-K through 8th grade. In a larger school she might be swallowed up in the crowd. PS... she is in gymnastics and loves it.

Your treading water is similar to sculling in artistic/synchronised swimming. It’s a technique that many people struggle to grasp. Thank you for your videos, you speak articulately while being approachable and funny.

I LOVED this video. I feel so seen. The difficulty of growing up with a physical disability in gym class had more of an impact on me than I realized. I loved swimming growing up and was good at it - I should get back into the pool!

Team selection by the captain is just awful. Should not be allowed. As I have no athletic ability at all I was always one of the last to be picked. So demoralising. X

@@husker91 yes, some teachers just point at kids and say 1 2 1 2. Friends are often times standing together. So that way you break groups up and have comparable teams.

Yes! This is so important to find YOUR sport. I remember I was trying aerobic with all those youtubers because everybody did that and I was so bored, i couldn't do that exercises, my motivation was really low. But then I've tried running and it turned out that I can be active, i can be motivated, but i had to find my discipline :) I'm so glad you have yours, swimming is really relaxing!

as a disabled person who has always been interested in sports and was always pressured by gym teachers to participate, but never received accommodations, i can relate! i also have always loved swimming. i'm a wheelchair user now as an adult (which has done nothing but improve my life in every regard), and i would love to reignite my love for archery and water through adaptive sports. my rheumatoid arthritis means i'm limited on time, strength, mobility, energy, and function [especially when the brain inflammation flares up!], but i've found a free adaptive water sport group where i plan to move with my partner, and i intend to fully take advantage of what they offer. they started their program after one of the disabled coordinators tried to board a standard sailing boat and fell between the boat and dock, having to be rescued from the water. he and his friends never wanted to experience that again, and they created an awesome program that my boy and i have heard nothing but good things about. thanks for this video and for sharing your love of athletics! it is so important that able bodied people understand not only that they can help us overcome the barriers other able bodied people created, but how to help us. knowing we exist and to listen to us is a huge first step towards that.

Your attitude is amazing and I love how you advocate and teach but you keep everything fun and encouraging. My oldest daughter has Autism and she participated in Girl Scouts from Kindergarten until she graduated High School. Her Troop Leader and I worked to accommodate her needs and make sure that activities were accessible for her. She didn’t do everything, but she did most of the things the other girls did. She didn’t always do it in the same way, but she was challenged in a way that she could be successful and she had fun and she made friends and the other girls treated her like a regular kid and part of the group. That was absolutely huge for her, and for us as her family. I’m forever grateful for that experience, and I truly do hope that more people will understand that inclusion and accommodation makes life better for everyone, not just people who happen to live with extra challenges. I’m so glad that I found your channel! I hope to see more videos soon. Keep loving life!

I promise to spread the word on the Playbook to other educators! Can we get it into the hands of the highest level Phys. Ed. Leaders at each School Board/district? Any chance we could also have a real talk with those gym teachers that ignored your needs as a young kid? I can’t imagine a teacher not realizing they had the obligation to accommodate you and every student. Universal lesson design- common sense!

Gym class sucked and I am not disable. I was a "girl" so as some boys were playing football I had to roll over in a stupid skirt. Why did they separate us, why did girls had to use skirt. Also teachers would choose a captain and then those children had to choose their team mate. Sport sucked no matter, but I've what for kids with disabilities even more. I hope things start to change
