Trying to Buy Clothes with a Disability
Today, for the first time in a year I went to the mall to buy some new clothes. I wanted to give you a glimpse into what it's like to try to buy clothes with a disability.

I dunno if shoe brands count, but Vionic carries a lot of zip up and velcro shoes. They are so easy to get on one-handed! (I have some nerve issues on my left side.)

Walmart is comming out with adoptive line. Billy shoe is a shoe brand with no laces. IZ clothing is an other one
This was so cool. You answered so many questions I didn’t understand the answer to! Thank you for being vulnerable and teaching us about your disabilities
Was gonna say my disability doesn't affect my clothes shopping experience and then I remember that my depression/anxiety makes me cry every time I try on clothes...

You okay?
Loved the slow motion entrance with the swim shorts 😂😂❤️
That stripy shirt is SO cute! The colours really suit you!
Loved the look of the blue linen, too bad it got funky in the chair. Great swim trunks and last shirt! Love you, bye!
I have a disability as well, so I started to sew my own clothes. I would love to sew some short and shirts for you as well! (For free of course). I just need your measurements.

I wish we were best friends IRL for so many reasons, but one would be so I could be your personal seamstress! I love sewing and started cause I’m tall and nothing was ever long enough.

I have the opposite problem I’m super short and everything is too long on me
@wendyannh

@@Ginger_Sweet My issue, too! And I’m short waisted and too fat for the majority of petites, unless they are women’s petites, so I almost always have to factor the cost of alterations into the cost of the garment in deciding whether or not to even buy it.

@@wendyannh I’ve just given in to the leggings are pants crowed and buy everything stretchy i am also wearing leggings 2 sizes too small because they’re cheaper than compression garments I have lipodemia and lymphedema so im trying to get the excess water and lymph juices outta my legs its slow going but its working i have a huge dent in my left calf because my cast was cutting into me after surgery in 2020 lol
Loved the slo mo swimsuit entrance. Some brands that have accessible or adaptive lines are Tommy Hilfiger, Target, and it's either lands end or LL Bean although that's just in their uniform line. One of the things Tommy makes are seated fit pants! Jillian Mercado is a disabled model who has done work with Levi but I'm not sure if they actually have an adaptive line.

I had no idea about any of those! Tommy Hilfiger does not make plus size clothing, though, that I know of. That’s another form of exclusion of different bodies - except that the average woman in the US now is something like a 16.
So when will you be booking your clothing model gig or get sponsorship by an accessible designer??? This vid was informative yet fun. So you!
I do most of my shopping at Walmart I'm sorry to say. I have very little money plus I am overweight (100 pounds). Thank you so much Spencer for being so candid and insightful. You are a true gem. I look forward to your new content.
Thank you so much for talking frankly about these sorts of issues. It's very easy to be unintentionally ablest because unless we are disabled or are close to someone who is, its easy to miss accessibility issues because the status quo works for us.

My sentiments, exactly! You don't know what you don't know.
Great comments about how to make clothing more accessible. Can't help but think that part of the problem is fast fashion - alterations and custom fits are a better deal if customers knew they'd be wearing this for the next several years.

This is true. Thank you
Waist SNATCHED hunny💁🏻♀️ the swim trunks are so cute i’m glad they worked out for you!! thank you for another enlightening episode Spencer♥️♥️
Really glad I found you're channel! So relatable. I'm a full-time wheelchair user and have pretty much been only wearing maxi dresses with empire waists for the last 5 years. As you point out, my waist expands in the sitting position and I can no longer tolerate uncomfortably tight clothes like I did when I was younger! 😅But I still need to feel somewhat fashionable! I learnt to sew for this reason too!
The bathing suit looked great! And I loved your glasses change! Yes, the word is simple and stores do need to cater to more diverse bodies. If Big and Tall and Lane Bryant can do it, I mean, come on…..Love your videos!❤️
I really enjoy listening to your stories. You are such a genuine person and seem so sweet !
I'm in a wheelchair. Clothes shopping is hit or miss for me... Especially in the pants department. The waist part is fine (usually). It's usually the length that is either too long or too short. I also discovered I cannot wear jeans (too heavy on my legs).

Try another brand. There are multiple mills that make denim, and it comes in various different weights, including some very lightweight summer forms.
so sad you had to return most of those clothes 😵 but your fashion sense is IMPECCABLE
4:11 I canttttt stop laughing 😭😭😭😭😭 I love it!
I love this video! It has helped me understand how you sit, and see how I can be a better advocate for people with disabilities.
Fussy queen ... LMAO that last outfit was the best anyway
That linen shirt looks awesome on you. So sad it didn't work.

ikr?! he looked so good!
great video. I know the struggle all too well. I use a wheelchair the majority of the time and clothes shopping for cute clothes is a nightmare. usually i'm stuck in just plain tshirts and sweatpants. Now I will say I love Time and Tru clothing brand! Their pants are super comfortable and with my leg braces, I find that their pants work well with them. Shirts from them are sort of hit and miss just depending on the style but for the majority, everything from them fits. I'm not a dress person because of my wheelchair and i found a cute, simple black dress that fits great and doesn't get caught up in my wheelchair.
My dad is 90 and I he only wear a sweat pants because I can't find more formal pants with elastic waist, for an elder that is not fast enough to unbutton , can have bathroom problems. At least I can't find in Argentina
As always, entertaining and funny, and love your style and how you show up as yourself - keep rockin' it!
Yes!!!!! Love your ideas on making clothes more accessible for those w/ disabilities. Love your ideas on how to make that possible. It's so difficult to find clothes that fit my 2 year old son. When he was born he had tortacollis & had head & neck mobility issues bc of it. He also has a flat spot on his head from that as well bc he couldn't move his head/neck himself in the crib like other babies can. He had early intervention for a year & we did physical therapy w/ them as well as physical therapy elsewhere until he was discharged @ 12 mo. Since his head is abnormally shaped per the therapists from having this condition finding shirts to pull down over his head easily & can be taken off just as easily are difficult to find. When he was still wearing Carters brand onsies when he was younger it wasn't a problem bc those necklines stretched so it was very easy. I'm finding now that he's a toddler the regular necklines they have on shirts are a hit or a miss. I dislike that they don't stretch & have no give to them.
I love this and I love you! You're so open about yourself and I love how bubbly you are! Keep being awesome!
Good luck with finding more clothes that suit you better, I do love your spirit (as always)! And yes, the purple shirt is too cute and matches the hat really well :)
I love your personality, not only do you make me laugh but you also inform me on stuff I didn't know about before
Love your matter-of-fact explanations!
The choice of music at 4:05 just killed me. I adore your sense of humour + this video was super informative especially the part about how your body changes while sitting down. That nice light blue button up in Medium looked gorgeous on you!!
Ooof, my waist blobs over when I sit, too😂😂😂😂
I love linen because it keeps you cool & sweat free!
I love your ideas for clothing accessibility! It makes sense and i hope it will become widespread!
It's cute when u swing like pendulum love u spencer ❤️😻
Two words for the gappy button ups (provided everything else feels good): FASHION TAPE! Amazing fabric-safe double sticky tape... put a little between the buttons and those gaps close right up. As a curvy gal, I live for the stuff!
I love you Spencer! You have taught me so much and made me laugh at the same time. “As always, You’re my new best friend, call me every 5 minutes.” makes me giggle every time!
Good video. Continue on your road on getting the silver play button
Our city is finally open again but I’m still too worried about going to buy clothes I really wanted a few new light dresses to deal with our stupidly hot summers I’m not sure if the Scarborough town centre has reopened yet and my ankle is still pretty messed up from surgery I also had to lend my wheel chair to my father because my grandmother with dementia fell a few days ago and needed emergency surgery on her hip and leg thankfully she is now out of surgery and healing she took her first steps with help today they’re keeping her 2-3 weeks though and will be trying to treat her dementia as well I’m just hoping to get my grandmother back .
I love how you edit your videos like you jump all over the house every other sentence!! 💜💜💜💜💜
Shared your video on Twitter. I think the fashion moguls need to hear this and I think you should be the model to represent this!
Actually, as a able bodied person should I say that two things bought is a success. Fast fashion is a cruel b to everyone:D
Love your content keep it up!
Really interesting video. I learned to sew when young so I could alter clothes, partly because my disability makes me a bit too tall with ape arms. Later I learned how to make patterns for a perfect fit. Even made corsets to help with my spine. Even made fancy dress costumes for people with disabilities. I loved the challenge. It’s a shame My own disability made me give it up because, like you said, there should be more availability. Really interesting to see what a different body type/shape/disability needs and why. Thanks. 👍
I use Silverts, it is in Canada and I don't know if they have a U.S store or not, it is web-based, and they have a ton of clothes for the disabled. Love the store, everything from shoes, clothes nightwear etc.
Loveeee the graphic shirt but you have to return it, and love bottom up shirt looks amazingggggggg but sad that you had to return it:( , and the last shirt looks amazingggggggggg and happy it fits perfect!
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I'm a lifetime seamster and am working on expanding my tailoring skills so I can help my disabled friend alter their clothes to fit them better. I intend to teach them so they can eventually make their own alterations. It's tough for amateur tailors like us though, as there are so few instructional resources on how to tailor for disabled people. If you happen to see this comment, would you be able to share any additional specific tips like making shirts shorter in the front and longer in the back for wheelchair users? My friend has struggled for years to find anything that is comfortable for a person with one leg, so anything you can suggest would be helpful to at least try. Thank you again, and I hope you are having a wonderful day!
I have my limbs but I’m not proportionate (I’m female). I have a bad time buying clothes too. I thank you for this video & I agree with everything you said!
Spencer, why don't YOU start an accessible clothing line? Or at least be a consultant for a big brand? You'd be so good at both!
I love ur energy
Dude, don’t worry about the length of shirts if they otherwise work for you, because hemming them is such an easy and fairly inexpensive thing to do! I would also think that if you asked, considering your particular situation, that the stores should make an exception for you and allow you to try things on there. I have occasionally asked for help like this as a disability accommodation, although not for trying on clothing but for other matters I can’t even recall at the moment. It has no force of law, of course, but it can’t hurt to ask - and you are so delightfully charming I have trouble believing that many of them would not accommodate you. I haven’t found store dressing rooms closed here, however. Fortunately. And I’m a woman, so that might make a difference. I’m lucky that although I am using my wheelchair more and more often, I have not found any real problems with clothing, except with my beloved long winter coats and my longer skirts. I have to be super careful about making sure that skirts, dresses, and coats are well tucked up under my legs before I venture forth so they don’t get caught in my wheels, and I do have a couple of very beloved coats, including my furs, that are just impossible. I got one skirt caught in the wheels a couple of years ago and it got pretty much literally stripped from my body as it tore, and obviously I had to toss it, which was a real bummer. Fortunately there was just enough left intact that between that and my blubber flowing over I didn’t give the whole neighborhood a show on the way home. My fault for even trying to wear it; there *are* limits. And everything does indeed scrunch up like it does for you, so I look considerably fatter than I actually am, which is kind of a bummer, but a really minor thing compared to the blessed freedom my chair has given me. I think your suggestions about adaptive clothing are great. Even “normies” couldn’t object to magnets and velcro instead of buttons and zippers. Both have certainly shown up in shoes, so why not also clothing? Unfortunately, the world of disabled bodies is wide and highly varied, as I’m sure you know, so no one solution could possibly serve everyone, but these would surely help many. A good seamstress or tailor could easily change these things for you, but of course there is a cost involved. It would be wonderful for people who really need those adaptations to be able to actually get stylish clothing instead of the dreck they show in the various adaptive stuff catalogues. What do those places do, hire the worst clothing designers on the planet?? They are truly hideous, and it’s all the more insulting because they *are* targeted at disabled people. I wouldn’t wear any of that shite if you paid me.
i have issues with clothing to fit my needs also. it frustrating. the waistbands are never right and bottoms are too short when sat down in my chair. my stoma doesn't always fit the clothing and when i had a line it often battelled with bras and straps on my tops. sleeves also, if they are too long, have large buttons or loose they get caught in my wheels. things that dont stay sat on my shoulders are an issue also. i can't keep adjusting them and move/stand at the same time. i have found a couple of places that have things that work for me but mostly i have given up shopping for fun and only get clothing when i have no choice. that T looks great on you.
That striped shirt looks awesome on you. Great fit and great style.
You are a huge inspiration for me
More thought should be put into clothestores for disabled , can't believe they haven't done this before & like you say alterations aswell is a must .
I luv the swim shorts 🩳. You kind sir are a breath of fresh air 👍💜🙏 God Bless
I loved this video. You are funny🤭
Have fun Spencer. 👍❤
Unfortunately I have the sit down stomach spread. 🙄
I love the last t shirt!
I loved the blue linen shirt!
I hope designers see this video since there are so few who have actully specialised in fasion design for people with disabilities Excellent vid and great sugestions and you look fabulous in the striped knit top Hugs your way🤗🤗
Loving the button up!!! 😍
Spencer!!! Missed you goof ball
I love your videos!
I think I'm just as bummed as you are about that linen shirt. It looked SO GOOD! You rock a button up! Thankfully the stripe and hat combo was amazing too.
I freaking love this guys attitude
You inspired me my friend i hope one day I can meet you even if is virtual
That linen shirt looks OUTSTANDING.
You’d think the stores could make a return policy exception. . .
Noo! That button up linen shirt looked so good on you!
This video was so informative
My love handles appreciate elastic waistbands too 🤣
Hey, everything you bought works for you as far as I’m concerned. You look great in it all. Am I getting weird? Lol
I don’t know if you’ve checked Gap or Old Navy but some of the boys sized pants have a thicker elastic band on the top that’s wide and soft. They also sell ones with an adjustable waistband that you can tighten or loosen with a piece of elastic and button on the inside.
We have recently discovered my son has taken after them. One min a size 12 pair of shorts or pants from the same brand fit him then others don't & fall right off of him. They don't always stay w/ elastics so it just depends. I wish companies think about these kind of things when they make clothes for people w/ any kind of disability or issue that makes it difficult to wear the clothes that are currently on the market. Just like those that have sensory issues & how certain fabrics or tags in clothes bother them. I'd like to see more companies make their clothes more comfortable for those that can't wear what's available in stores. So far I've only noticed one company that does this for children's clothes. Brands need to make more of an effort to be enclusive to all people. I've found I have more luck buying him new Carters clothes when it comes to the neckline vs trying to wear the hand me downs. I'm not sure why that is & am disappointed that I can't keep everything that was given to us. You would think the necklines from the hand me down clothes would stretch out over the years but that hasn't been the case.
Those shorts are cute!
I agree. I wish I could find nice jeans that will fit over my prosthetic leg. I hate shorts. But I’m stuck in sweat pants when it gets cold because I can’t wear jeans. If I want to wear jeans I can’t wear my leg.
You absolutely need to start a disability clothing brand!!!!! Xx
Magnets for buttons would be great my hands don't always work the way I want them to so I really struggle with button especially on jeans
I live with a seamstress. Have severe Scoliosis and so my hips and shoulders are noticeably askew. Can buy offset hemlines and print tops.
Your clothes are super cute! I though you looked great in the linen top.
Love this video. I'll be calling in five...
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!! Call me 😏😉 OHHHH the shirt that fits is a great color choice. You look great in it. Hugs!
If you use a wheelchair I recommend clothes designed for equestrians and pilots. My favourite trousers are mil-tec flight pants - they're like cargo pants except the pockets are on top of the thighs instead of the sides. Finally, useful pockets! I tend to buy pants that are too big and then use an elasticated belt to hold them up. Obviously an elastic waist is simpler, but that can limit your options. Also yes, that body is beautiful - please accept this respectful ogling from a fellow wheely guy.
You have great taste hon 😊
I despise clothes shopping. Nothing ever fits like it should. I am short short leg short waisted but I’m big at the top. So everything is entirely too long and in the front it’s busting open with buttons are super tight across the chest area so it’s just it’s miserable and I hate dresses.
You need to come to Jamaica and teach me how to swim
Love the linen shirt 👕
I’m sure you know about Tommy Hilfiger, their accessible/ adaptive clothes and shoes line.
I'm so mad that blue button-up didn't work in the wheelchair because it looked SO good on him!! Accessibility in clothing is definitely a massive issue. Children and pregnant women get different clothes made for them. Plus-sized people do too, but I'm sure other plus-sized people like myself can tell you that they often still don't sit right. They're often just made larger with no consideration to where fat collects. I often get pants that squeeze my thighs super tight, but sit loose and baggy on my waist and around my lower legs. Shirts often don't fit my shoulders and chest properly, but are loose around my stomach. Then...that's it. You have to pay a ton of extra money for any other sort of accessibility in clothing. I hate it. I almost wish I knew how to sew for no other reason than to offer clothing alterations to disabled people for the lowest price I reasonably could go. But businesses that can afford to provide these options at lower rates really should be doing so.

i just want to know where you get your glasses and can i hire you to pick some out for me lol :)
You looked super good in that linen shirt tho! Too bad it fit weird when in your wheelchair
I don’t have a disability, but this is my experience shopping aswell. Legit the few times I’ve bought clothes this past year I have legit returned everything and it’s so annoying
