Why a Picture Book Collection is Important for Self Taught Illustrators
Today I am talking about my picture book collection and why they are such a great resource if you are looking to get into illustration and may not want to invest a lot of money to start. Illustrators are pretty lucky that they can pick up a literal map of their inspiration's minds!

I love Rebecca Green illustrations, I was in her patreon and I loved it. I just found the lovely Book "The Shy Ones" bby Simona Ciraolo, and I really recommend it, not just the technique, but also the story. My picture book illustrator of all time is Shaun Tan, especially "The Arrival" and "Red Tree" book. Thank you for sharing!

Of course, glad you liked it!
You should think beyond what it is you want to do. if you want to illustrate children's books and all you look at are other children's books, you'll never go beyond what's already been done. Look at all kinds of illustration from all time periods and look at fine art. Analyze it for techniques that you can apply to picture books that have never been used before. Look at real life Look at other styles and cultures. The illustration that is successful is illustration that thinks outside the box, not illustration that just checks off the boxes imitating other illustration... Look at the masters of illustration... Artzybasheff, Leindecker, Rackham, Dulac, Harry Clarke, Mary Blair. Stuff that is totally different from what you do.

Hey Stephen! I think this is great advice. Aspiring children’s book illustrators should definitely pull inspiration outside of other books, like outside experiences, history, other art forms etc. However, I do think referencing existing children’s books is necessary to niche down and think about structure, writing and forming your own taste for that particular industry. We all just need to avoid being too heavily inspired by one source. Thank you for the detailed response!

Thank you for this video - I love it ♥ it was nice to see some of my favourite illustrators here. You should check out a book 'Maps' by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy, they are non fiction, but made with so much fun. I think you would like it.

So happy you enjoyed it 🤩
this is lovely. i have a couple of felicita sala books that I bought recently, Lunch at 10 pomegranate street and also Be a Tree. so beautifully drawn. i have a couple of Teagan White books which have sweet critters in them. the only rebecca green book I have (so far) is digital copy A year with Mama Earth. Also one book by Julia Sarda, The Listz, again similar style to the above. For more colourful books I’m a fan of both Sandhya Prabhat and Chaaya Prabhat. I like Jim Field and Oliver styles too. very bright and bold.
