Our Children's Picture Book Collection 2023 // Character Building, Fiction, History, Culture

We love reading picture books to our children! We are currently in the mode of organizing our books. More importantly, we are cultivating a rich library on the picture book level, children’s chapter book level and for our own reading purposes. We’ve really enjoyed having books in our home. It is well worth the maintenance. You just have to have good shelving options.
Not all picture books are created equal. We didn’t realize that, until we started reading on a regular basis to our children. Some of these books we pick up and two-thirds of the way through it, we are struck with the profundity of the messaging in the book, the beauty and the way that it’s written or the beauty of the illustrations. It’s been really fun to start hand picking various picture books we are going to have as a part of our long term library and be introducing to our children at such a young age. These are the books you want to read to your children over and over again! You want them to have great illustrations, a beautiful message, and less twaddle. It’s great to know that we have a plethora of really rich literature at every child’s level right there in our home!

I think your kiddos would LOVE C. W. Anderson "Billy and Blaze" series. They might be a challenge to find as they were published in the 30's/40's, but the pencil drawings are incredible!

Hey guys! Just ran across your video and love your collection. I, too, went on a little children’s book buying spree this last year. Had to buy two new bookshelves 😆 I don’t think anyone mentioned this one yet, but anything by Leo Lionni is sooo good. “Swimmy” is one of our faves and is all about being brave. The illustrations are so unique and eye catching, too. Highly recommend!

My grandma worked at a library and would buy us those little house on the prairie books in the hardcover editions and slowly built our collection till we had most or all of them. The illustrations are such beautiful, soft colors. I accidentally 😉 have a couple of them at my house that I borrowed from my parents and haven’t returned. Edit: I just got “Deep Nutrition” from the library yesterday after hearing you guys recommend it (I got the other one you recommended, as well), and my life is changed and I am totally terrified of what kind of mom I will be someday now that I have this information.

All if Patricia Pollaco books are that bang for your buck type of book you mentioned several times. It takes me 10-30 min to read her books depending on the book. She is from Russia and she wrote her books all based on stories from her life. I havent found one we dont love. I just checked all of the ones the library had and we found some new favorites i need to add to our collection. Owl moon is another great one, A coat for Anna are just a few that come to mind.

Really enjoyed this video!! The last two were awesome & interesting! I grew up as a missionary kid & I want my kids to be aware of the world with its different peoples and cultures, and the need for the Gospel. I don't know if you have heard of Operation World, awesome resource to be able to pray for the world & specific needs in the culture. There is a wonderful kid version! It is called Window on the World that I highly recommend.

Thank you for doing this! I’m building my library for my littles and the depth of the language and beautiful pictures that inspire them is important to me! Do you have recommendations on Bible stories that are accurate and beautifully illustrated? I’ve literally been looking into writing and illustrating my own, because I want them to be accurate and respectful in the imaging.

Hey guys I'm sorry this is off topic...I do savor lots of your content lately and am blessed by it! Just saw your meal prep and you wearing the baby while cooking in this carrier and was a bit shocked. I've learned here in Germany never to wear a baby or toddler with it's back towards your body cause it's contrary to his spine which is round and not straight in the beginning and the hips that still develop. The natural position to wear a baby is basically like it is in the womb, like you automatically wear it on your arm (if upright) and as you see newborns draw up their knees when you take them up. To help baby get in this position in a wrap or carrier it needs to face you, plus the fabric between it's legs must be wide enough to support the whole upper leg from knee to knee. Thus the knees will be a bit higher than the butt, versus if it's only just between the legs they will hang down straight, straighten the whole body and spine. Also especially with boys, if the fabric is only between legs, the whole body weight will be on the testicles. Sorry for my English, hope you get it. So it's not just beneficial for babies hip development to wear in an "M" position, it's also just more comfy, plus baby can see mommies face. It's actual the perfect distance of 7,8-11,8" face to face where little ones can focus best. Maybe you wanna look into it, I hope it's helpful. Be blessed!

I really wanted to love Brambly Hedge, but it was a pain to read with my little one. He was so not interested and I even started getting bored with all the details. But then again, I think I'm not a fan of animals personified in stories maybe. I had bought the whole collection. I think the illustrations are too busy and the writing is tiny. I will give it another try. But I love Max Lucado's chikdrens' books. Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae is a classic. Might be considered twaddle...but so imaginative and super fun.
