When a vehicle slides and hits a curb in the ice or snow serious damage can occur. Your vehicle is designed to approach any oncoming object directly facing the tire surface. However, typically when we're in a nicer snowstorm and we're sliding into a curve, if we're making, let's say a left-hand turn and we slide to the outside of the turn because we don't have enough available traction, the coefficient of friction is no longer sustaining us as we go around that corner. The front tires may understeer and push to the outside of the curve. We call that a scrub radius. If that happens, the outer tires will push to the outside. You'll feel as if you're turning the wheel, but the vehicle is still continuing straight, and it may come into contact with that curb on the other side of the road. If this happens, you definitely want to turn the wheels straight, which is very counterintuitive and hit that curb straight on.
Now, it won't feel very nice. It's going to be hitting like a big speed bump, not going to be very pleasant, but the vehicle is designed for incoming impacts on the front of the tire, that leading edge. It is not designed for impacts to the side. If we take a look from the front of the vehicle looking towards the rear, we'll be able to see exactly why damage can occur when this happens and how best to avoid it. If this tire is rotating forward and it strikes an object, that objects going to attempt to deflect into the tire. Now the tires pressurized for the tire itself will absorb some of that force. The tire itself may deform and if it's at high enough speed, the impact, of say, a cement curb, may actually deform the wheel hard enough, it dents into the wheel itself. We'll show you a picture of those we have here in a few minutes.

Hi Saul, greetings from Scotland.I found your video very helpful. I showed it to my son, who had kerbed his offside front wheel on ice. I drove it to check it, it felt like a damaged wheel bearing, and also the steering wheel was now offset, and this video convinced him to take it to our local garage. Result- new wheel bearing and also replacement shock absorber which was bent! Keep up the good work, it's great to see a mechanic that cares about the quality of the work he carries out.

I used to live in Denver so but now I don't I'm out here in Georgia and I drove off the road in the fog and struck my right wheel on the side and a ditch and it's bent in and towed out cambered in on the top and towed out it's a Ford Explorer 97 do those frames bend easy or is it probably just a swing arm do you recommend I bring it to someone to tell me what is the case?

So, it is possible to bend the frame if sliding into a curb in the snow, right???

I bought a car that driver side took a direct impact, broke the lower ball joint and bent the upper control arm which was aluminum. I put a new arm and ball joint and inner and outer tie rods and measuring the spindle location in relation to the strut its having a positive caster condition on the driver side where the impact happened, in fact the wheel is about half an inch further towards the wheel wells on the driver side than it is on the passenger side. I have measured and checked the frame and I do not see any actual frame damage, the horns are straight on the car and the strut tower and upper arm mounts look ok, as does the subframe and crossmember and lower arms. I think something could be tweaked. should I take the car to a traditional alignment or maybe take to a frame/wheel alignment. I am thinking it will need frame adjustment

Hi Saul, thanks for the video! I was involved in an accident. My front passenger side was damaged. I replaced the strut assembly, lower control arm. Now after alignment, the caster is not as positive. The wheel is basically shifted back a little. What should I do next? Thanks!

Question I was only pulling out of the parking spot. The side of my right front passenger tire wall rubbed against the curb. Amd the side of my truck when up the curb. My truck drives straight no crazy movement of the steering wheel. Should my alignment be okay?
