As a native of Tianjin, I'd say that the old Tianjin concession area is still the golden area of Tianjin, with the highest housing prices and the best living standards.

I've heard about the concessions in Tianjin, but this is the first time someone explained them to me. Although this might be a bit nit-picky, the flag you used for Austria-Hungary is not the national flag of the nation. That flag is the civil ensign (what they use on civilian boats) and is very different from the national flag.

2:58 Well the very non-Roman Polos probably knew Latin fairly well as it was the European lingua Franca at that point and they must have used it on a regular basis as they were traveling merchants and Latin was the language of commerce in Europe then.

Some more info on the concessions in other cities would be interesting. Parts of Qingdao still look quite European in a strange way, and China's second largest brewery got it's start there because of the German concession

Fun fact: These 8 Nations have never in their entire histories agreed on anything in unison ever, never before, and after this one instance, never again (so far). It's a miracle that they even managed to march out of Tianjin together, diverged into separate fronts and remerged in the center of Bejing without accidentally pissing off one another.

Babylon, Persia, Greek, Roman, Ottoman, China, Britain all went through this situation. China was at the bottom of the cycle, Europeans at the top, just the facts. Saved you 600 seconds, friend.

They didn't have the time. The Japanese attacked the Italian concessions as soon as they heard of the armistice. They were besieged for a time, and then the Italian garrisons were taken prisoner. Mark Felton made a video about it (title is "Italy vs. Japan - The Forgotten Pacific War").
