It's all about sectional density! Like I told you recently, my 6.5x55 would shoot all the way through a tree that was almost 2 feet in diameter, while my 8mm and .308 rounds would get stuck and not make it through. I'd never heard they were tough on barrels...what's the reason for that? Just the greater bearing area?

  • Жыл бұрын

The ammo we shoot is ~910ms / 3020fps. So that will wear the barrel down faster than a 308 which usually is about 2800 fps. But I have not had any real issues with it. You can compare it to 223 vs 308 in barrel wear.

  • @buffaloshite

    @buffaloshite

    10 ай бұрын

I suspect these wear statements are based on extremely uncommon theoretical circumstances. If contemporaneous machineguns could do thousands of rounds, the cost of barrel replacement is probably negligible at that point on an AG-42 if they ever get that used. I have a 6.5x55 German K98 rebarreled with a Danish Schultz & Larsen heavy barrel and a bolt from an Imperially stamped Austro-Hungarian Gewehr 98. Definitely not numbers matching - but She still cycles nice, and I don't wish it was in .308.

ya thats sad. European ammuntion is way better then "american" as they are higher pressure. For instance, the 120 scenar-l loading from Lapua has two diffrent velocities - 2700 (830m/s) and 3015 (920 m/s). Compare that to the 6.5 CM loading of 2790 (850 m/s).

The Swedish Mausers are made of very tough vanadium steel so can usually withstand a good number of rounds. The M96's are very old but very tough. They had very high grade iron sources which gave them very high grade steel and adding vanadium to the mix created an amazingly tough steel. I have a 1908 Swedish M96 VFR target rifle that was probably an extraordinarily accurate rifle that someone or many people shot probably close to 100k rounds through. I tried it out and it shot all over. I looked in with a borescope and almost 2 inches of the throat was shot out. I had a Swedish CG80 target barrel which I put on, but getting the old barrel off was difficult. I had to machine off some of the old barrel to break it loose. That old Swedish steel was remarkedly tough some of the toughest steel I have ever machined. I went through 2 Chinese carbide bits getting enough material off to remove that old barrel. Now I have a beautiful CG80 rifle with competition style sights on it. The Swedish target rifles were just accurized military M96's.

Regarding to your thought about how long the military will make use of 7,62-.308 ammunition made me think of the documentaries of the low-intensity shooting exchanges that Swedish units in Afghanistan have with small groups of Taliban in Afghan mountainous areas when some Taliban's 2-4 with some one have an old Lee-Enfilde .303 rifle harass some Swedish patrol at a distance of 600m-1km and the patrol answer to that was call in artillery or flight support or maby the cheaper option of answer with CV-90-40mm or M2 .50 cal, the new AK-5 KSP-90 5.56 was not good enough for that task and the PSG-90 was not apparently on that trip, In any case, you can't call the modern west-world military cost effective rather the finance manager's nightmare they haven't learned anything from Vietnam war or Soviet's war in Afghanistan, if the Swedish unit's had have the KSP-58 and even the old m/41B then they would have solved the problem reasonably cheaply.

It's not just the .308. On either Hornady's or Vortex's podcast they were discussing the 6.5x55 mm cartridge versus the 6.5 Creedmoor and one of them who had been looking through reloading manuals flatly stated: "It's (the 6.5x55 mm) a better cartridge case" and nobody on the panel disputed that. An avid hunter I know used to buy and hunt with every calibre that came out . . . . until he encountered the 6.5 x 55 mm M 38 Swedish Mauser. He said he had more one shot kills on deer, elk, moose and black bear than with any other calibre.

The 6.5x55 was also a German Mauser calibre rifle. WW2 Sharpshooters still chose it. I chose it because it is the BEST all around cartridge for light to medium game. Other rifles have copied it, with only minor improvements if any, and why gild the lilly anyway? Together with the Swiss 7.5 x55, these precision riffles are regarded by many enthusiasts as the most accurate military calibres available to the soldier in the field. I had a rare one--a Husky with a chrome lined bore--sniper version. Incredibly accurate rifle--even using the overcharged military rounds designed to operate a gas-actuated or recoil activated machine gun. If any rifle cartridge was ideal for loading to a specific rifle `action and barrel length, the 6.5x55 with its range of bullet weights available is probably the one. The semi-auto version especially needs a different hand load than does the bolt action one. The military ammo has a tad too much muzzle blast and that after-market screw on dissipater gadget may be of some use here.

Since I’m new to hunting and from the Netherlands where certain (in my opinion biased) calibre opinions live, I was wondering what your opinion is between the following calibres: .308 (advised by local hunting school due to impact force) 30-06 (advised as above) 6.5 PRC (the ammo I think is better. Would pick the 6.5x55 but somehow that calibre gets lots of resistance for bigger game due to less delivered force)

  • Жыл бұрын

For any hunting distance the .308 is good enough. The issues come in where you want dual use for target shooting at long range. So depending in usage scenario you want to take a closer look at the caliber you choose.

One issue with the 6.5x55, esp for americans, is the bolt head. They are close in size but the head on 6.5x55 is larger. In the states they tend to make x55 ammo with the bold head size of 308, but when some ammo is made for US and EU/Sweden, the cases will not fit in some actions even if they are "x55". This makes for a poor experience if you buy a "classic" american gun, in america, with inch-pattern..

I'm a big fan of Mausers, I have several of them. But the Swede unfortunately is not one of them. The problem here in the States is the slightly bigger case head and brass availability. But there are other options just as good. I have a 260 Remington and a 6.5-06. Competing with or besting the old 6.5 is not a problem. The 308 is actually excellent as a hunting round though. It delivers a bigger payload with more efficiency because of the larger gas area at typical hunting distances. The ballistic advantage of the 6.5's isn't even a factor until you are a good 700 yards out, and the majority of big game is taken at much shorter distances than that.

Do not forget that the 6.5x55 have less recoil compared to the .308. Anyway, here in Sweden 6.5x55 ammo is cheap and available if you shoot it. So there is no real reason to pick a 308 compared to a 6.5x55, unless you want to hunt with an AR10 or something.

The remarkable thing about the 6.5x55 is that it took a mere 113 years for a cartridge that’s only slightly inferior to catch on in the rest of the world. 😁 I was recently deciding between the 6.5x55 or .308, and went with the 1894 classic for the same reasons mentioned here, plus I like that it makes full use of the action length on a T3X instead of having a bolt stop. Obviously it doesn’t make a performance difference, but it’s nice to have a Scandinavian cartridge in a Scandinavian rifle, too. No regrets! It’s so easy to shoot well, and there’s a great variety of factory ammo in Norway; everything from inexpensive 100-gr reduced-load training rounds (“Rekrutt”) to state-of-the-art Lapua cartridges that get maximum performance out of this excellent and versatile calibre.

People think that people from the 1890's where dumb. They where not. the smokeless cartridge was pretty much perfected before the turn of the century. There was additional development in powder, but the base design is not flawed at all. There was great care taken when designing the case and dimensions. the largest issue today is the Short Action hysteria people have for some reason. the X55 was developed to be used in machine guns and later automatic rifles so it was not at all limited to just bolt actions. In another universe the x55 was nato standard and it was killing russians today.

@ Back in March I got to shoot a .25cal topped Creedmoor. The gun companies are really missing out on that wildcat. It was so soft. Could be the greatest ladies and junior shooting round. The rounds I shot were super stout 130gr loads. The new twist rate and super heavies make .25 another great choice.

I wish it was more popular in the US but it isn’t. It can be hard to find brass to hand load it, which is the only real option we have here. Fantastic cartridge though.

  • 8 ай бұрын

Yeah, it is awesome. Hornady has some nice factory loads for it I use for hunting when I cannot be bothered with reloading. But any 30-06 rifle can fire the 6.5x55 with a barrel swap (I did this myself once). If my memory serves me we had som BAR:s in 6.5x55 for example in Sweden back in the day, belt fed as well.

I have a Sako 6.5x55. I use Ar2209 made in Oz by ADI (Australian Defence Industries), the American equivalent of H4350, also made in Oz and renamed by Hodgen for the American market. After a lot of research and testing I am 3-4 grains over ADI load data, which is very low because of ex-military load data. My go to load is a 143 gr Eld-x at 2860 fps. Pigs are not impressed.

6.5 in general (Grendel, Creedmoor, Swedish) is absolutely better on paper than similar .30 and .22 caliber rounds, but unfortunately they also tend to cost like 50-100% more, at least here in the US. (Plus my m/94 shoots like two feet high at 100, even with an aftermarket raised sight 😔)

Major exaggeration on the difference in wind drift between the 308 and 6.5. Just went on the Federal ammunition site and ran factory 6.5C vs 308 using 140gr 6.5 match bullet and 308 168gr match bullet. At 1000 yards and 10 mph wind the 6.5 drift is 88 inches and the 308 drift is 108 inches. That is no where near 2 or 3 times the drift. Actually it is only %22 more drift. At 1000 yards a 10 mph wind requires correct and proper adjustment for either caliber and a drift of 88 inches vs 108 inches is a negligible advantage. With that drift both calibers require very correct wind reads and proper adjustment and if you are off you will miss. The 6.5mm caliber does offer advantages over the 30 caliber in smaller capacity cartridges but not your exaggerated advantages.

  • 9 ай бұрын

That depends on the bullet used ofc. There are good .30 bullets nowadays but even at 22% you are still handicapping yourself using a .30 cal rifle.

I think it's funny how everyone pretends that 6.5 Creedmoor is some new revolutionary idea when 6.5x55 has been around for ~130 years and has effectively identical external ballistics. In modern rifles (i.e. made of materials that can withstand higher pressures than 6.5x55 was originally designed for), there is even a performance advantage of 6.5x55 over 6.5 Creedmoor.

  • @lars277

Hey brother, the Swedes invented the first 6.5 caliber cartridge over 125 years ago. 125 years ago, the first cartridge they make and the 6.5 Creed which everyone is so high about is basically the same as the 6.5 x 55 SE. I am an American veteran. The 7.62 NATO has a rainbow trajectory. They tried to bring 30.06 ballistics in a shorter case and it just did not work. 7.62 NATO is evidence of the institutional insanity of NATO.

Everyone knows 6.5 variants are better than 7.62x51 for long range. But most shooters will never have regular access to ranges beyond 500 yards. And here in the USA we're generally hunting at under 200 yards, so the .308 always works great. So buying a long action rifle is somewhat pointless unless you're in competitions.

  • Жыл бұрын
