WHR Photo Charter - Laukota No.11 'Fiji' - 9.5.14

During its stay at the Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, 1912 built Hudswell Clarke, works number 972, was used on a 30742 Charters photo charter on the Welsh Highland in aid of the Railway Children Charity on May 9th. 2014. The locomotive which worked at Lautoka Sugar Mill in Fiji as No.11until the 1950's when the line was dieselised. Many of the steam locos were scrapped in the 1960's but fortunately No.11 survived and had a spell on a tourist railway after being converted to diesel power.
The loco returned to Britain in 2011 and went to the Statfold Barn Railway the following year and was successfully steamed in 2014.
On a dry, but windy day with some good spells of sunshine, the train is seen at various locations including Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert and in the Aberglaslyn Pass.
Many thanks to Martin Creese, Paul Lewin and the crew for providing the photographers with a most enjoyable day.

Lovely video Austin - the little loco was dwarfed by the rugged Welsh hills and mountains and the scenery was stunning providing an excellent backdrop to the train. I liked the long close up pan shot following the loco around the curves, and the shot at the end of the train emerging from the rocky tunnel was a great frame shot. Thanks for another enjoyable video. Ken

Many thanks Ken, the close up shot was quite fortunate as we had filmed at the same spot in the morning and I was concentrating on train in the landscape type shots. We returned to the same spot near the end of the charter as the sun had made an appearance so the opportunity presented itself. I must admit it was one of the best days I've enjoyed this year

Thanks again for a wonderful video. I walked a section of this line and through that tunnel back in 1970, with a sense of great sadness - a sense of what might-have-been. It is wonderful to know that the line is restored. But I still have not had the opportunity to go back and travel along the line. One day ... Tom

Hello from Pakistan. What a delightful video. There was a time that I rode steam in my childhood in the fifties. Thanks from bringing my memories back. Specifically, I rode steam trains with my parents on the now abandoned Zhob Valley Railway as a teenager.

Beautiful gem of a narrow gauge loco there. Tender engines seem to be a tad uncommon for most narrow gauge lines, barring gauges of 2’6” and up.
