Part 2 - Welsh Highland Railway - Then and Now - Rhyd Ddu to Waunfawr

We re-join our train at Rhyd Ddu for the second part of our journey to Caernarfon as far Waunfawr. Once again I have included images from 2000 to the present day including many shots taken before the tracks were re-laid. Rhyd Ddu is the highest station on the line with Mount Snowdon towering over the station on one side and wonderful views over (Lake) Llyn y Gader on the other side. We take a look at construction trains in Beddgelert Forest from the time when Rhyd Ddu was the end of the line for passenger trains. Our NGG16 Garratt steam locomotive eases out of the station to start its descent to sea level, the view from our carriage window shortly after restarting causes passengers to reach for their cameras, as we are treated to an amazing vista offering stunning views over the valley far below, with the picturesque (Lake) Llyn Cwellyn hemmed in by high mountains on either side. We run within sight of the Lake for the next few miles until we reach its outflow into the Afon Gwyrfai (River Gwyrfai). As the river flows gently past the pretty village of Plas y Nant the valley floor widens into a lush marsh dotted with old trees covered in moss, after which the railway passes through pleasant farmland crossing the river several times before reaching Waunfawr, which like Rhd Ddu was the end of the line for passengers for several years, as the line was gradually reinstated all the way to Porthmadog.

    Hi Martin, I don't live in Wales but one way or another I have visited most years in the last sixty, sometimes for holidays, other times to visit relatives or friends. I have grown very fond of both the place and the people. Coming from England's South coast I usually enter via the Severn Bridge and meander my way North stopping off at the many wonderful railways along the way. It has been inspirational to see the rebirth of both the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, they are a real credit to all those who made it happen, now I call in at the Corris Railway hoping to see it emulate the success of the FR & WHR. I'm please you enjoyed this video, hopefully you'll find one or two more to watch both on this and other KZread channels. Cheers. Tim.

    Hi Peter, I love Welsh scenery, it's mood changes with the weather, dark and foreboding under heavy clouds one moment, bright and sunny the next. Much of the rolling stock on the WHR came from South Africa, although the carriages are from the UK, many being built recently to enable the running of longer trains.

    Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it, has the new camera arrived? From your channel I see the last of the scheduled trains until Christmas have now run on WSR. With the shortening days and less going on at that the weekends, you will be forced to spend the evenings either working on your layout or sitting by the fire, drinking hot cocoa. I think I'll shoot a video showing the leaves falling from the trees around my local Pub beer garden this afternoon, although I think someone may have beaten me to it. I look forward to seeing the results from your new camera.

    Yes and lots to find out about too! First unknown to me was that a Sony camcorder only works with a Sony sd card. It wont accept any other make so i was left for a while thinking there was something wrong with it!! And no one anywhere near here, not even Currys in Taunton, has any in stock as they are a lot more extensive to purchase than other makes. I eventually got one from Amazon and my recent video about the coastal walk from Minehead was my first true 4k upload with it in normal lighting conditions. I am pleased with those results. If i cant sort out a few unknown things about it for myself soon, do you mind if I ask you a few questions about it?

    Hi, I bought my camera from Bristol Cameras who also supplied a couple of SD cards, they are 128GB Scandisk Extreme Pro SDXC1. I have had no problems with them although the Sony cards are probably the safest bet. I also bought a couple of spare batteries, the one that comes with the camera lasts a long time so for day trips spares are not really necessary. If you edit long videos for KZread, 4K does tax the computer so I work on 10 minute segments that I combine to create the final video. I still edit most of my videos in Full HD, but starting with 4K video does allow the use of stabilization software such as Mercalli without any lost of picture quality. Lens protection is vital if you are planning on filming out of a train window because the dust in the air stops the automatic lens cover from working, I use a standard daylight filter for protection. I'm going to take a look at your coastal walk video now. If you have any question, just ask and I will help if I can.

    Thank you! I also bought my AX53 from Bristol Cameras as they included a free second battery for the best price I could find on the net.. I will search out those Scandisk cards which hopefully will be easier to find. I find having made a video, there are many still j pegs also recorded with the movie footage which if not wanted waste memory card space.. Is this some quirk of the settings or am I accidentally touching the photo button when zooming I wonder? The photo button was in the same place on my previous Panasonic camcorder and I didn't do that then! The fine quality of your uploads made me think you use 4k throughout, but are you now saying you start in 4k but then convert to HD somehow (how?) and then upload as HD? If so, you still show excellent picture quality.That daylight filter sounds like a good idea.How would I describe the size and fitting I would need to fit the camcorder? Is there a way you can see in the camcorder the amount of free space there is left on the memory card? There was on my Panasonic and I found that facility very useful. So far on the Sony site i can only come across a copy of the brief instructions that already come in the box, and not a more detailed manual. Do you know if there is one?

  • @Timsvideochannel1

    @Timsvideochannel1

    I would suggest contacting Bristol cameras to buy a daylight filter and memory card as they will know what to supply and their prices are pretty good - its worth stretching to the 128 GB card, I have just looked at the filter on my camera and it reads AIR UV 55mm. If you put the memory card into your computer, there are lots of small images, they are the preview images for your video clips (they are very small files and not the result of accidentally taking photos). When using 4K they appear under M4ROOT - THMBNL. I have only used the camera set at 4K & MP4. The still images appear under DCIM - 100MSDCF. There is a small button on top of the camera to the left of the photo button to switch between photo and video, although photos taken in video mode are pretty good. You can see the space left on your memory card, but you have to be quick. When you open the viewer or flip out screen, for a short while in the top right hand corner the time left on the card is displayed under the battery charge level indicator. I film in 4K all the time, but my video editing software allows me to output at 1080P. If I am using footage from several cameras some set at 1080P and some set at 4K I find I get the best result if I output the finished video at 1080P. If all the footage used is 4K then I upload to KZread at 4K. I only used the instruction manual that came with the camera, but I was already familiar with the way it worked as I also have the predecessor to this camera. The best way to learn is to scroll through the menu on the camera, although in reality once the camera is set there is little need to change anything. There is a rotating ring on the front of the camera that you can assign an action to in the menu such as focus, but again I never use it. I hope this helps. Tim.

    You are lucky to have a helpful niece, loosing an Email address can be a bit of a problem, all the people past and present that now have an incorrect Email address for you. It happened to me a good few years ago when Email was changing to broadband. I have a second channel I originally set up to test music I had purchased for incorrect copyright claims. It doesn't have enough views to be monetized, but I have a large number of videos I edited for myself before I knew about KZread, many of them use pop music, so they cannot be monetized. I am considering uploading one or two to my second channel and renaming it accordingly.

    My situation arose because the service I used announced to me(via email) that their prepaid broadband service was being shut down, leaving only a post-paid broadband. With the closure of the prepaid broadband they were shutting down their email service. For me, that's a deal-breaker. And it's Virgin Broadband that's doing this for reasons of their own. As to KZread and the notifications "bell", comments still get to me because KZread notifies me of those comments, as they do for you and everyone else once the(your) email address is established and your channel's up and running, or if, like me, you've had to change email addresses, when the new address is inserted to replace the old. My greatest concern was the possible loss of over a year's worth of uploads but that was sorted, thanks to my very clever, computer-savvy niece. Thanks, Erin! Anyhow, that's my situation in a nutshell. Cheers, Tim!

    A lot of money has been spent restoring this railway, both public and private, but at least we can see what the money was spent on. The railway is lucky to have had the backing of some influential people such as Pete Waterman who's influence has helped secure funding for locomotives and their restoration. Funding for initially rebuilding the railway itself to Rhyd Ddu was forthcoming from the Millennium Commission (£4.3m), European Regional Development Fund, Welsh Development Agency, Wales Tourist Board and sponsorship from the WHR Society, Historic Houses Hotels and First Hydro. Please click on this link for more information - www.festrail.co.uk/whr_history_3.htm The volunteers who gave their time freely to help in the re-construction made and are still making a massive contribution to the railway we can all enjoy today. The railway is still not quite finished as new passenger facilities are being constructed at Caernarfon which will both enhance the town itself and give a fitting start or finish to a ride on the line. I hope all the people and agencies who contributed feel their money has been well spent on this wonderful venture that will attract many thousands of tourists from all over the world to Wales, spending money and creating jobs in an area that really needs them. Oh, and I have to agree without all the outside help reopening this line would have remained a dream.

    Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed visiting North Wales via this video. As a child I spent many wonderful holidays there, if feels like my second home as I visit most years. The railways were built to take slate from the quarries to the nearest port for onward shipping. The terrain was difficult and money was limited, these were the driving factors behind the choice of gauge. Some of the locomotives are surprisingly big considering the gauge is just under 2 feet.

Only three trains a day each way at best - crap! 😡 I would’ve expected at least double that in the high summer season. All that effect and money spent rebuilding the WHR and they hardly using it. There’s plenty of passing loops on the route so six, seven or even eight trains a day would be doable.

    Hi, the volunteers have done a wonderful job bringing this railway back to life. They need to contruct another 10 or 12 car train to run more services, along with restoring another locomotive to working order. That will be expensive and they will have to be sure of filling the trains before they can run extra services, although it might be a good idea to run a regular heritage train similar to those that used to run on the line.
