Durango & Silverton Railroad - Part 2, with Driver, Passenger and Lineside Views

In Part 2 of this trip aboard the Durango & Silverton train, we continue through picture postcard scenery, never far from the Animas River, our handsome steam locomotive emits a purposeful beat as it continues to lift our train through the Colorado mountains towards Silverton. Take a seat, pull down the window and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

    Excellent video. Shows very clear and steady of the River from on board, rail views as from the front of the engine (although it is from the back played in reverse as Tim says) and all the other beautiful scenery. This is a wonderful video. Tim rode the train several times to get all the different shots of the same site. Good captions of the different places. Excellent editing. Thanks for sharing.

    An awesome, second chapter to a breath-taking ( and I mean that very sincerely ) train excursion! In full-screen, high-definition, your video is a 'virtual vacation' of stunning scenery and color! I actually had the sensation of 'riding' in the coach, right alongside of you! The gorgeous scenery at Counter 19:56 through 20:07 just nailed me to my seat! Thank You so much for sharing this video journal of your trip! Your footage is as good as any of the commercially available train videos! You need to get an award for this one!

    Hi, I really appreciate your comment, I enjoy travelling and making these videos although I can't give up the day job yet. This was my first visit to Colorado, I was on an organised tour to ride some of the states wonderful railways, I was expecting the experience to be a good one, but as it turned out, this tour surpassed all my expectations. I would love to return one day.

    Much of the route through the gorge is inaccessible by road and I think this is one of the reasons so little has changed since the line was built.

    You see so many Highline videos and videos of the train along the highway or at the Durango depot I bet a lot of people would think the train other than the big cliffs of the Highline travels through some hills at best. This video especially at the 20 min mark shows the beauty of the big mountains of the Weminuche that most of the train videos I have seen don't have. Amazing, great video!

    Thank you, your comment is appreciated. The High-line is breathtaking and I agree there is a lot more to see along the whole line. It amazes me that anyone could even have thought this line was possible, let alone actually build it. This ride was the highlight of my visit to Colorado.

    When two angles tell different stories! When I see the shots coming from the loco's end(right up front and looking onto the track), it makes the track appear wider than what a narrow-gauge track should be. Yet when I see the track from further back through the train, from one of the carriages, the track appears exactly as a narrow-gauge track should be.... optical illusion. Great video, Tim!

    +pega17pl, yeah. I got the impression from some shots(looking at the track from the loco's end) that the track gauge was wider than it should be, but other shots(from one of the carriages) showed the width of the track as it should be for a narrow gauge. An optical illusion.

    IT is the use of wide angle lenses, as the camera is lower and closer to the ground/rails they appear father apart than normal, and a sharper angle to the point they appear to merge in the distance.

  • @Timsvideochannel1

    @Timsvideochannel1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, the third rail is a check rail to stop the train moving further over in the event of it leaving the rails. They are usually used on sharp bends, bridges or areas where the train would drop off a cliff edge if it completely left the rails.

    The one way trip from Durango to Silverton is about 72 kilometers. You can take a bus back or return on the train. Wear glasses as the coal will get into your eyes especially uphill when the engine is working hard.
