Enola Gay was the name of the plane, named for the pilot's mother. The bomb they dropped was called "Little Boy". Three days later Nagasaki was bombed...they named that bomb "Fat Man". The 'kiss' they referred to in the song I suspect was the nuclear fallout...aka radiation burn/poisoning that anyone in the vicinity of the blast suffered if they didn't immediately die in the initial blast. Such a happy sounding tune, very dark subject matter. A lot of 80's music was about the potential of WW3 happening in our lifetime. Thanx for playing that song...never gets old!

We just called them OMD, since Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is so long. This 1980 song was one of the first I heard by them, and they entered the charts at the same time as two other major synth pop bands, Depeche Mode and Human League, did, so I always associate the three together. In my mind, this song goes with Depeche Mode's 1981 "New Life."

Seconded! I'm named after Jeanne D'Arc (aka Joan Of Arc) and have a picture of her on the wall. I ♥ Maid of Orleans but you have to get past the weird synth sounds of the first 35 seconds (which I still love because it's OMD!). Maid of Orleans is the song I used to learn how to play the drums - fabulous drum part but it's a great song overall. I love OMD 🥰

The keyboards on this song are epic. There's that wonderful riff that is repeated throughout the song but underneath that is a keyboard line that repeats a slightly ominous sequence of notes, it produces a tension that says this is not just some happy disco song. Such an interesting song, both lyrically and musically.

OMD have darkish sound, and are one of the pioneers of electro/synth music. Hard to believe that this song was from 1980. A couple of other great tunes are Maid of Orleans, and Messages.

This was not just "a war plane", this was the one that dropped the first atomic bomb. This song has so much packed in it, Enola Gay was the name of the pilot's mum, and he named the plane after her. The atomic bomb they dropped was nicknamed Little Boy. Also the line "It's 8:15, the time that's always been", is because that was the time at which the bomb was dropped, so when the clocks broke the hands stayed pointing at 8:15 forever.

The Synth sounds between 1979 and 1983 will never be beaten. They were still analogue Synths then and although later model Synths were cool, they just couldn't beat what came before IMO. OMD had a great sound around this time. The Real Bass Guitar added so much to the dynamics of their sound.

8:15 am local time was when Enola Gay bomber dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. OMD was kind of between the German electro pioneers Kraftwerk and the more mainstream synthpop of the 80s, some of their early stuff was very experimental vs what they became known for as more pop friendly songs like "If You Leave". They had a music video later on in 1991 song "Pandora's Box" a tribute to the 1920s silent movie star Louise Brooks. They used footage from the 1928 movie Pandora's Box of her. I think you will be stunned how beautiful the video is of an actress almost a hundred years ago.

"Enola Gay" is an anti-war song by the English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), and the only single taken from their second studio album Organisation (1980). Written by lead vocalist and bassist Andy McCluskey, it addresses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the aircraft Enola Gay on 6 August 1945, toward the conclusion of World War II. As is typical of early OMD singles, the song features a melodic synthesizer break instead of a sung chorus.

It's an anti-war song, at heart. The cold war (between USSR and USA) concerned younger generations well into the 80s. Some artists expressed it in songs like this. Others being, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's - Two Tribes, and Nik Kershaw's - I Won't Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Two others I recommend for reaction.

OMD was one of the Pioneers of the Synth Pop sound. Them and The Human League were two of the first bands to experiment with this new sound. This song though, is not a very good example of how great this band was and what it meant for this new Synth Pop thing that became so huge later in the decade. This song is almost experimental. Sounds almost "childish" at times. My favorite OMD song is "Dreaming". It's a banger of a song, and it came much later in the decade. By then, they were known worldwide and their hit "If You Leave" had become one of the biggest songs of the decade. I think you just need to react to "Dreaming" and let's see what you think!
