The tricky thing with the on field plays is the angle we have from the TV is so different from what the ump actually sees. So my guess is Madrigal's helmet fell just right in the worst position it could for the ump

That last one especially falls into that camp. He looks out by a mile from the camera angle but you need the Umps position to see if he actually whiffs the tag.

And the audio too. On safe/out call the ump is looking at the bag to see when the foot comes down while listening for the ball to hit the glove. At least, that's what a broadcaster told me in a game I watched once

Used to be a community little league umpire. It’s so much harder than it looks on TV. Sometimes the angle from the broadcast is just a better angle to see the play, and sometimes the only way to see what’s going on is being right there on the field. Being an umpire is a thankless job, and I respect a great deal of them for being as consistent and good as they are.

As an ump I can assure that angles are a thing, especially when calling balls and strikes. You see, the umpire is not centered with the plate, he's a bit to the side, in between the catcher and the batter. This makes calling inside balls easier but makes calling outside balls really hard because of parallax, untill you get the hang of it.

Played along with you guys. Got 8 of 11. Proud of myself. I used to be an umpire. I quit because I sucked. LOL. And the foul on the right field line looks fair even on the slow mo. So, I’m gonna chalk that up to the camera angle. I got one pitch wrong, and missed the pop-up on the slide at third. Not bad for a guy who quit the business cuz he sucked so bad. Of course, doing it this way, as a KZread play along is far easier. What got to me, and the reason I sucked so badly, is I anticipated too much instead of going with the play. If someone SHOULD have been out but wasn’t, I would sometimes call them out anyway. I didn’t suck so badly that I did it all the time. But I did it often enough that I knew umping wasn’t right for me. I do a great job armchair umpiring, as I did in this video (I think 8 of 11 is “great” considering the right field line play still looks fair). But throw me in the middle of the action on the field? Forget it. I’m a disaster.

As Jack will be replacing Angel. Lol 😂 I honestly think I would be a fair ump. But making calls needs to be decisive while the whole league and fans are watching. Great video, I don’t watch baseball that Often, I missed two on the ball and strikes. I don’t expect plate umpires be perfect., from their perspective the baseball looks like a white blur. For baseball play calls, I missed the first one, I went with tie goes to the batter-runner, it appeared the ball and the runner arrived at the same time. The second fair or foul ball, where the ball landed on the third base foul line, I got correct, by calling it a fair ball, because foul line is considered in fair territory. The play where the runner popped off the bag I got correct, by calling out. The last fair/ foul ball, I got wrong, because the ball clearly landed in fair territory from the perspective shown. The play at the plate, I got correct, because the catcher got possession of the ball before runner cross the plate. That is key when it comes to plays at the plate. Overall, great video
