Who Were Gene Tierney's Most Notable Lovers? | Hollywood Life

► In this video, we look at Gene Tierney's love life, including her most notable lovers and marriages during her Hollywood career.
► Gene Tierney was a famous American actress who starred in many films during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She was born on November 19, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, to a wealthy family. She was discovered by a director during a family vacation and offered a contract, but her father disapproved of her becoming a Hollywood actress. She later pursued her acting career and became known for her beauty and roles in films such as Laura (1944) and Leave Her to Heaven (1945), for which she received an Oscar nomination.
Tierney had a tumultuous love life that involved several affairs and marriages. Here are some of her most notable lovers.
John F. Kennedy: Tierney met the future president in 1946, when he was a congressman. They had a brief romance that ended when he refused to marry her because of his political ambitions. Tierney was hoping to gain a divorce from her first husband and then marry the dashing young politician, but it was never to be.
Tyrone Power: Tierney had an affair with the bi-sexual actor in 1946, while they were filming "The Razor’s Edge". Power was married at the time and had a reputation for being a womanizer.
Howard Hughes: Tierney had a brief affair with the billionaire, aviator and film producer in 1940s. Hughes was obsessed with Tierney and tried to control her life, but she rejected him. Hughes eventually became a lifelong friend and he paid all medical expenses for her disabled daughter, Daria.
Kirk Douglas: They met after Tierney ended her marriage with Oleg Cassini in 1952, but Tierney broke off the affair with Douglas the minute he told her he was not interested in marriage. Douglas dished about some of Tierney’s odd habits - including insisting that he visit her by climbing into the window of her Hollywood home and mount her when she wasn’t expecting it.
Prince Aly Khan: While filming for "Personal Affair" in Europe, she began a romance with Prince Aly Khan. They became engaged in 1952, while Khan was going through a divorce from Rita Hayworth. Their marriage plans, however, met with fierce opposition from his father, Aga Khan III.
Tierney married twice in her life. Her first husband was Oleg Cassini, a fashion designer, whom she married in 1941 and divorced in 1952. They had two daughters, one of whom, Daria, was born deaf and mentally disabled due to Tierney’s exposure to rubella during her pregnancy.
Her second husband was William Howard Lee, an oil tycoon, whom she married in 1960 and remained with until his death in 1981. Howard Lee was previously married to actress Hedy Lamarr. Lee and Lamarr divorced in 1960 after a long battle over alimony.
Tierney suffered from mental health issues throughout her life and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She underwent several treatments, including electroshock therapy, which affected her memory. She died on November 6, 1991, at the age of 70.
Gene Tierney’s love life was full of passion and drama, but also of pain and tragedy. She was one of the most glamorous and talented stars of her era, but also one of the most unfortunate ones.

I think about the “me too” headlines of this era and I think of the” golden age” of Hollywood where I’m willing to wager that any female (and I mean any female of any age) who had screen time, got there because she did a “favor” for some Hollywood producer, director, actor or what ever. I don’t think this generation knows how rough it was for those before them.

@@kev792 I was reading “the Godfather” by Puzo…and the producer who given his horses head in bed…he was a guy who prayed on 12yr old girls for movie role ( it’s not in the movie) it’s in the book and that why the godfather doesn’t mind tweeting him as he finds that distasteful …in the time line of the book that would have been 50’s…Shirley Temple came to mind, sadly. While the book and director is “fictional” this guys says “she was the best piece of asz I’ve ever had and I’ve had them all” when talking about why the god fathers god son (Jonny Fontaine ) isn’t getting the role of a life time…it’s not far off for that type of person to have huge control over whether you in a movie or not…to say nothing of the male star having their co-star as a love interest/lover or what ever. Nothing in Hollywood back in the day was merit based…just watch some of the old black and white films.

@@garyb2392 Yea, I've seen a couple types of those films. They were heavily misogynistic and often featured large age gaps between the actors. Meaning super young female and an older middle aged guy. Those people were sick in those times. Still are actually.

@@kev792 couldn’t agree with you more! There is a reason why “casa blanca” was the most regarded film of the era because there is literally nothing else good but hundreds and hundred of films were made in the same structure as you described…20 ish actress and 50yr old actor…who of course are “dating”…I think of Lauren Bacall she was like 25 when she was with Bogey he was like mid to late 40’s! Now a days people freak out…but this sort of thing happened all the times
