In 1973, I worked at a hospital in Houston. Gene Tierney's husband was admitted to the hospital. I saw her waiting out in the hall. I wanted to walk down there and ask for her autograph, but I didn't because her husband was ill and I would not bother her during her time of worry about him. I'll never forget it.

She never did consider herself beautiful; she hated her mouth and she was slightly plump as a very young woman. Daryl F. Zanuck wanted her to lose weight, and develop a lower voice, and ordered her to start smoking, which became an addiction, and she later died of emphysema. She also states in her book that she had always loved food, and said that from the age of 20 on she was hungry all the time.

Im struggling with mental disease, I hope I ll reach her age with that strenght. She said one time that his Last husband loved her with the best and worst of her. Thats the most important thing 😢. I had a boyfriend that Was like that but I got really scared and really anxious Back then. I didnt feel Good with myself and I didnt want to be in such state with a boyfriend. I thought that i should try to recover. The day I bróke up with my boyfriend was so sad, I Felt That it Was What i had to do but I was crying at the same time

Nuny, start with two of Tierney's films: 'Laura' and 'Leave Her to Heaven.' 'Double Indemnity' with Barbara Stanwyck. 'Conflict' with Humphrey Bogart. Any movie with Barbara Stanwyck, Bogart, or Bette Davis from 1930 - 1955. 'The Women' with Norma Shearer. 'Stage Door' with Katherine Hepburn. Turner Classic Movies is the best for exposure to older films.

Yes, she was indeed a beautiful woman but to me, the thing to admire her for was the way she endured unbelievable suffering (the birth of Daria, her daughter, for instance) yet survived and gave this wonderful interview. Why are such nice people so often loaded with endless troubles when others, far more deserving of them, seem to sail through life? A very dignified lady. She doesn’t try to paint a perfect picture of herself but is honest and open.

The extraordinary face is still there, if older. Look at her films. She was a mesmerizing actress of great delicate beauty. When she was on screen, you looked at no one else. It's great to see her here happy and confident after much turmoil.

Mental illness was a taboo subject to discuss back in those days. People assume that if you've got a mental illness, that you should be in a padded cell. And the electric shock treatment is a brutal form of psychiatry. Vivien Leigh said that when she'd gotten EST, she was just glad that it was over. Pure Vivien suffered from manic depression, renamed bipolar disorder. Though everyone who known her personally all said she was intelligent and very intellectual. Both lovely gracious ladles.❤🙏🙏🙏xx.

Wonder what they had in there that they felt the need to keep it with them; and as I typed this I realized it was cigarettes they had in their purses! Classy ladies wouldn't walk around carrying a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, but a purse, yes.

My grandfather worked in Hollywood. He said Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Gene Tierney were the most beautiful women (IN PERSON) and most photogenic women out of all the other actresses. Our modern celebrities do NOT hold a candle to any of them.

Bobby Paluga Tierney was diagnosed with empyema at this point in her life. Many of her generation did not know the dangers of smoking. There is a particular sound people with empyema have which is what you hear in the timber of her voice

As a kid in 1988 we moved to Houston from Mexico into this beautiful neighborhood. Every house had huge yards. Our neighbor across the street was an older lady. I must have been 7 years old. This older lady became friends with my parents. She was very elegant. One day we were getting out early from school and Mom and Dad were out of town on business and our babysitter was unavailable to pick us up. So my mother phone the school and we were to stay across the street until the sitter arrived. A cleaning lady scooped us up from from where the bus left us and took us to the house. She had lots of black and white pictures, a rugged voice and she coughed alot. We ate peanut butter sandwiches and milk. Mrs. Tierney we called her. She was so sweer. We had no idea who she was and she never told us. We would often try to go back but mom would say "Mrs. Tierney is a film star she dosent want to be bothered". Of course we didn't believe it she didn't looked like what we saw on TV and the movies. It wasn't until I was 18 when it hit me. Omg! That was Gene Tierney! Bless her heart.

The first one, Daria, was born severely and multiply handicapped -- partially blind, deaf, and mentally challenged --as a result of Gene's exposure to rubella whilst pregnant with her. Her younger daughter, Christina, also ended tragically. Her father, fashion designer Oleg Cassini, had initially arranged for his substantial estate to be divided between his two daughters. But when he died it was discovered that he had changed his will and left his fortune to his "companion," who claimed she was secretly married to him. The case was still in litigation at the time of Christina Cassini's death, age 66, of ovarian cancer, from which she had suffered for several years, in 2015. As of last year the case had not been settled.

What a beautiful lady! Even in middle age she still had great charm and warmth.❤️❤️❤️

I've been watching her movies, especially the ones with Dana Andrews. She was a very talented and skilled actress with stunning beauty. She could play a narcissistic, cold, and ruthless individual in Leave Her to Heaven and then a loving, compassionate one in movies like Where the Sidewalk Ends. Her eyes could project various emotions in a brief moment. One of my favorites! And it seems like she was nice, genuine, down to earth person. Overcame a lot!

I had not seen Gene Tierney in an interview before. She is wonderful! I'll bet she was fun to know. Good story teller....when she's not being interrupted.

Loved Gene Tierney in Laura that movie is one of my favorites of all time. Very compelling and mysterious. I have watched it more than once. I get something me out of it every time. She is very charAsmatic and definitely lights up the screen.

The more I read about this woman and the more I see of her, the more I am astounded at how wonderful and down to earth was. A wonderful actress, the most underrated of that era. And so unbelievably beautiful! Gene Tierney was exceptional in every way. Thank you so much for uploading this - it's a treasure.

So tired of all these comments that moan about our modern times. Was it really so much better to live in the 1940's? Well, back then you wouldn't even have Internet to write about it. Yes, you might consider the old days "classy" and they had some very charismatic faces ... but it was also an extremely racist, sexist, hypocrite, homophobic time. I'm a passionate fan of Gene Tierney and her generation but I also appreciate our modern cinema where at least sometimes a black person gets a major role and subjects like sexuality are not censored as something nasty and dirty. I think our generation also has many very charismatic and unique faces who are also fantastic actors - Michael Fassbender, Cara Delevingne, Natalie Dormer, Christoph Waltz etc.... How do they "all look alike"?! Btw, it's absolutely possible that Gene had some face lifting done, as it was practiced at that time and long before. Marlene Dietrich for example had several plastic surgeries.

Sandy Weinhold No offense, but none of those names will Be remembered 5 to 10 years down the road. Cara Delevingne is only a former model with a stunning face. No noticeable talent for acting so far. Like I said, no offense but no one today will ever be remembered as the great Golden Age of film with great writers , musicians, artists and directors are all now in the past, sadly. The new crop changes every year it seems .Its not their fault, no support system exists today to nurture any foreword motion of their “careers”.

@@marjoriemargel1567 True to an extent. Still, I just want to mention that every person's cheekbones become lower as they age (gradual volume loss and sagging of tissue). But, if you start out in early adulthood with very high cheekbones (like the lovely Gene Tierney), you can look forward to still looking good into your old age. :)

My kids dad always told me that I look like Gene Tierney. I don’t think I could have received a better compliment! ♥️

I wish people like you would learn to research and find out facts before they come to such rash conclusions. You are the one who is screwed up...

What does mental illness have to do with her acting ability?She was a talent and a great beauty.She also seemed from different accounts to have been very empathetic towards others.Likely due to the pain she suffered at the hands of her illness.Mental illness is common in Hollywood and some of the most talented suffer/suffered from it ...Patty Duke Astin, Robbin Williams,Vivien Lee and on and on.What a cruel and uncalled for comment you made.It sounds like you need a lesson in compassion.People can't help being mentally ill.

This is an amazing, real, down-to-earth, very talented woman. She was unique and special and no one else could compare to her style. She seems like a very nice person and must be appreciated for the years of suffering she endured and yet raised a family amidst all of that, to say nothing of working in Hollywood which, as she notes here, has broken more than one man or woman.

It's amazing how frank and candid she is about her mental illness. Very rare for a star to be so open, but she was always very down to earth, and according to many a pleasure to work with. She was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen on screen. Loved her.

One of my favourite actresses. Gene was so courageous to talk openly about her illness in 1979. You could see that Mike was in love with her as we all were.

It's funny, I'm watching Heaven Can Wait and this interview at the same time. It's so strange to look up from my computer and see Gene Tierney some 40 years younger on TV, then back to my computer, but I digress. You can see the labored breathing, and how her voice changed due to the emphysema which eventually took her life. A beautiful down to earth woman, who was still beautiful at this interview. Never smoke. It's slow suicide

Loved her in "Laura' (1944). Her voice was higher back then. She said she hated her voice so took up smoking to lower it. That was her demise. She was the perfect 1940's movie star. Classy and beautiful with just enough sex appeal. .

A great actress-loved her in the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. To put out a candle of aging well--does anyone? We all grow old......and botox just makes it worst in the end. I think she was well looking and still carried on the class she created. A very beautiful woman with charisma and smarts. Do not see a lot of that today.......everyone has someone whispering in their ear on what to say. That simply states a forum of simplistic brain power today. Very demeaning for our times today. How devastating for the upcoming Hollywood Icons-or are they icons-really? Love the fact she dissected some of the facts of mental illness-she was a brave individual. I think about that when I'm watching some of the old movies because so many of them have such substance in them and I think of how many people don't get it... It worries me how dumbed down so much of society is today and worry about the public schools. Speaking of the education aspect, so many young people don't value it, talk over the teacher, disrupt the class in many ways-making it hard for teacher to teach and for kids to listen and learn, the ones that want to learn. I don't have the answers, but I have some ideas and I think of it a lot. I say this as an aide and a teacher in the classroom for the last 9 yrs. Clearly my soapbox because I have a lot of thoughts and worries regarding this topic. BUT, I agree GT was lovely as a younger and older person. Laura is a comforting movie to me because I love Dana Andrews and Vincent Price as well. I also loved The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

Gene Tierney is wonderful and Mike Douglas, wow, just a class act. He was a great interviewer. He was a good listener and respectful to his guests. And so prepared.

She’s one of Martin Scorsese’s favorite actresses. He never worked with her of course but he often says how underrated she is.

Intelligent, charming, humble and beautiful. Gene Tierney is so wonderful in this interview. Mike is just fine, too. Love it when Gene puts her head down as Mike starts to sing LAURA. I kept thinking how lucky David Brenner was to be sitting there watching and listening to this great lady.

I really think that both Miichael Douglas and David Brenner were in awe of a very great lady in their presence. I believe she felt their admiration. RIP - ALL. ❤

You can tell Mike had such a special affection for Gene given their similar age, and his connection to the song. This was a really well done tribute like interview that he gave to her.

I am a man in my 60's and I just love Gene Tierney. It was so great to see her in this interview. Still beautiful. Thanks!

I always loved Mike Douglas' voice, so so natural. And I love it when he backs the mic away when he sings louder, you know his voice is legit, and no "condenser" mic for him. That must have been a thrill to meet her.

My grandmother, who I think looked like a movie star, told me Gene was her pick for most beautiful... and Gene’s brother was named Butch. That’s what my grandmother named my dad. Kind of cool. I miss my granny, and women like this.

Gene Tierney was one of a kind. Talented , down to Earth , beautiful.. Her mental health probably triggered by being in show business ( which is brutal and draining.)... I knew her daughter Laura - we went to Laura's mother residence. I had no idea who her mother was. Imagine my surprise when Miss Tierney answered the door.. elegantly dressed. And so charming and gracious. The oilman Howard Lee was the father of Miss Tierney's daughters Kelly & Laura. Hanging out with Laura and meeting her Mom is one of my most treasured memories.. How she came out her mental health struggle is inspiring and uplifting..

I am so glad we have this priceless interview w/ such a Grade Lady of the Screen. She broke barriers for so many people w/ mental health issues . As an actress, she shines in a class all by herself. I'm so glad Mike Douglas sang "Laura." I was surprised the Band didn't play it as she was being introduced.

Aww that was touching. "Laura" is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea Mike Douglas was a singer and he could sing too. Gene was beautiful, I think her, Rita, Yvonne, Lena, Dorothy, Carole, Ava, and Myrna were some of the most beautiful women from that era.

Yes! I struggled with cigarette addiction all my life. I started smoking when I was fifteen and quit cold turkey after a bout with walking pneumonia in 1979 which was a total of ten years. Then in '83 I began again and smoked up 'till 1998 using Chantix to quit ~ Chantix really works ~ it makes you forget to smoke. Unbelievably I started again in 2001 and smoked of and on until February 8, 2017, when I was hospitalized for a pulmonoscopy. As I had started Chantix before I went in the hospital for the procedure, when I got to my car in the parking lot that had a pack of cigarettes on the cosole between the seats and when I saw them I said to myself, "You just had your lungs cleaned out! Don't you dare touch those cigarettes!" and I didn't and haven't smoked since! I recently learned about third hand smoke and realize that that is what caused me to start smoking again all those times in my past. A few months ago I visited a neighbors home wherein she and her son both smoked indoors and the smell of cigarettes was very strong (third hand smoke). For the next following few days I had very strong cravings which caused me to google the situation wherein I learned that when one smokes a single cigarette, that the smoke of that cigarette lingers on their hair, skin and clothes for up to four hours. Makes sense: that's why we can smell cigarettes on someone after they go outside, smoke and return indoors. As you say, "Just don't smoke for any reason because cigarettes will eventually lead to an early death."

Sheri Stewart Thanks for sharing. Chantix worked for me the second time around. The first time I was in London and had just stopped but every one around me smooked so I gave in. Upon returning to the states I gave it up for good. I don't have cravings , the idea was always better than the taste and smell.

+ArseneWenger   I held her beauty far above those you mentioned. I think it was the eyes. She had eyes as green as the sea. Perfect lips. Vivien Leigh came close. If you see her in Leave Her to Heaven, she plays an evil vengeful wife. And still that face is still perfection.

+Erik Exner I saw Veronica Lake, in 1944, when she teamed with Alan Ladd. At that time, actors would come out in front and answerquestion from the audience. Ladd was so small I realized why they chose Lake. She was 5'0" even and Ladd was 5'6". I wasn't impressed with her looks.

First of all Ronnie was 5' 2'" She was a box office star before Ladd came along!! & If you saw Ronnie on stage in 1944. You must be 80+ by now. No matter what she was certainly better looking than you!!!!!! PS: She weighed 98 lbs.

Still beautiful and so down to earth. Her private life was very sad. But she was obviously a survivor. Lovely natural lady.

For someone to speak so candidly about mental illness back then evoked a negative response from audiences. Gene was a trailblazer! Today we understand a little bit more and thanks to her and others, we can empathise, focus resources to help and realise in some way that... It could be you.. But there is support to be found.

So lovely and what a wonderful personality. This makes me love her even more.

No other actress has come out to beat gene for the most beautiful actress in Hollywood.
