polyprinz I thought I was one of a few people who still said that phrase" drop dead gorgeous!" It is an apt description of someone, who is quite besutiful, handsome depending on the person, saying it. She,certainly had her shares of positive and negative life experiences in her life, and from what I have read about her,did the best, she could with them.

In 1984, I saw her in a Houston supermarket. She'd gotten rotund, and no one else paid any attention to her. She looked wonderful in a simple brown pantsuit with a large black belt, flat heeled shoes, light makeup. There she was, pushing a supermarket cart like any other shopper, looking somewhat depressed because the store was packed, and she knew she'd have quite a long wait in a checkout lane. She pushed her cart into the aisle next to mine. It was unmistakable who she was. When she realized I'd recognized her, she dropped her eyelids, and I, not being a clod, didn't look at her again.

Truly, one of the greatest beauties ever to come out of Hollywood. She was just 36 years old here, and hadn't made a movie in over two years since "The Left-Hand of God" with Humphrey Bogart. Ms. Tierney suffered from mental illness, and underwent extensive shock treatment after production on that film had ended. Just four months after this appearance on CBS's "What's My Line," in late December of 1957, not too far from the CBS studios, she stepped onto a ledge from her mother's Manhattan apartment, 14 stories above ground. From her autobiography: "“I must have stood there for 20 minutes....” I was totally without fear, and I thought, ‘What’s the point of living?’ ” "[What saved me] was vanity. I thought of what I’d look like when I hit the ground-like a scrambled egg. That didn’t appeal to me. If I was going to die, I wanted to be in one piece.” Gene Tierney, a chronic smoker, passed away of emphysema at the age of 70, on November 6, 1971. R.I.P., Eliza...

Only Virna Lisi and Hedy Lamar come close to the beauty of Gene Tierney. My favorite Gene Tierney movie is "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and then "Laura" then "Heaven Can Wait" and then "Leave Her to Heaven"! I am a Merchant Marine and her opposite of Rex Harrison as Captain Greg is one of my all time favorite movies. Her husband Oleg Cassini was an incredible talent in his own right and a heavy influence on the style of the 60s when I was growing up. She is also a tragic figure having contracted measles from a fan while pregnant. She played opposite of some great leading men (as per the aforementioned movies) Rex Harrison, Dana Andrews, Don Ameche, Cornell Wilde, etc. etc.

Hedy Lamar, Claudette Colbert, Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Linda Darnell and Gene Tierney: they were- at least to me- the most prominent actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Wit, talent, class and beauty... all rolled into one- Gene !!!

@hopicard Oh, Gene Tierney was beautiful!! Such natural, real, and clean lines and look to her. She started in Films at age 19 or 20. I watched some of her first movie. She looked like a totally different person than how she looked in say "Laura". She was young, and all "raggedy", dirty. Play a poor gal.

Gene played a farm girl daughter of real hicks who (Gene) kept chasing after Ward Bond whenever he showed up at their shack. Classic bumpkin girl...all sex, dirty face, and the enticing poses she struck were killer. John Ford film.....I remember Bond turning a car over by crawling under it and lifting it over on his back.....

John's comment at the end indicates that it was difficult to get some people to get the polio vaccine, just as we currently have problems getting people to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Despite the difficulty that John mentioned, polio has since been eradicated from almost every country in the world. It is only found today in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

1957 would be a tough year from Ms. Tierney. According to wikipedia: "In late December 1957, Tierney, from her mother's apartment in Manhattan, stepped onto a ledge 14 stories above ground and remained for about 20 minutes in what was considered a suicide attempt.[14] Police were called, and afterwards, Tierney's family arranged for her to be admitted to the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. The following year, after treatment for depression, she was discharged. Afterwards, she worked as a sales girl in a local dress shop with hopes of integrating back into society,[14] but she was recognized by a customer, resulting in sensational newspaper headlines. Years later, she would make a comeback of sorts in 1980, with her last appearance in the television series Scruples, which I remember well
