RIP, Marine. The stories of the fallen are not to be taken lightly. These were men and women, often in the prime of their lives, who made the ultimate sacrifice for a greater good. People can sit on the sidelines and debate about what that greater good is, or if it's even a greater good, because men like 1stLt Donnelly lived and died for their right to do so. The Merchant Marine Academy is rarely thought of these days. I had the honor of working alongside a 2LT who had commissioned out of that Academy, when we were acting as Observer/Controllers at West Point 10 years ago. Like 1stLt Donnelly, he commissioned into the Infantry. Unlike the Marines, Army Infantry officers are all but expected to complete Ranger School, and this 2LT had not yet attended, so I have no idea how his career worked out.

My enlistment was a 6x2 contract... Left for boot jan 13 2009. While enlisted and as a supply marine for 4th LAR while my unit was prepping for deployment...i used the experience i gained to teach civilians how to care for the troops. The civilians i taught did soo well that the commandant made them the example for the type of relationship that all military and civilian support groups should have. Mariners church irvine... That said sadly 2009 through 2010 was the most amount of funerals ibhave ever been to. 3/5 ibwent to there sendoff and because ibwas a marine and had a american flag flying from my truck.. I was asked to be their guardian angel from pendleton all the way to march air reserve base... So i saw them off on that deployment. Personally my unit 4th lar...we took soo many casualties that i was literally next on the reserve list to be sent and we were deemed combat ineffective. We got hammered in helmand. We lost our sgt maj Cottle and lance cpl centenni on memorial day 2010. And as the marine whobissued out all the body armor... And knowing the condition of the sappy plates... I hate to say it...i prayed that the armor i had to issue was not ever what failed...as it was armor that was old and crimbling and already full of battle damage.. And i was forced to issue it or be court martialed..
