Who talked faster - me or Air Traffic Control? 😅Let’s get clearance to ✈️ Destin-Nashville

Getting our clearance from Air Traffic Control to fly from Destin, FL (VPS) to Nashville, TN (BNA)!
Sometimes ATC speaks quickly! This is the shorthand I use when copying down a clearance to make sure I get all the info 👍

I worked radio communications for years. Rule One was to always speak slowly and clearly when relating information that is to be copied. In the long run it saves time and prevents confusion. As an exercise I would have trainees, both operators and agents, to imagine writing down what they were saying. Some I had to tell to actually write it as they were saying it. Everyone got it, understood the logic and effectiveness. My shift had zero incidents of misunderstood or missed information. A side benefit was that when communicating emergencies everyone calmed down a beat or two. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, our calls were addressed without unnecessary stress and with great efficiency.

The air-traffic control system is evolving to help. The instructions from the air-traffic controllers will be sent digitally, so that they can remain displayed on a screen as long as the pilot wishes. The digital transmission also makes it easy for automated equipment to set itself to the correct parameters. Digital transmission of the controller’s commands has some disadvantages, however. Other aircraft will not hear the commands, which reduces pilot awareness of what all the airplanes in the vicinity are going to do. Researchers in air-traffic control and aviation safety are looking into these issues.

Veteran controller here at a level 12 facility, believe me when I say I'd rather give a clearance slower one time than faster 3 times. That being said I do appreciate a pilot who can rip the clearance right back to me after I've given them a quick one! 🇺🇸✈️💪🏼

After 45 years of flying; just retired, i got a lot of these “chicagoese” as I called them. When the frequency is not busy, as in this example, why speed talk? I remember going into Chicago, moderate turbulence, not easy to take notes, and ATC gave me a heading, a crossing altitude, final altitude and speed, arrival, runway and new frequency. Of course I missed a couple of things so I asked him to repeat everything after the word ‘washing machine’. He got the point and slowed it down for us and everyone else on that arrival. Geoff Quickfall BSc, MSc, PhD candidate. 28,000 hours DC10, B373, 757, 767, 777, 787.

I love it, love the breakdown of coms with ATC! Same thing as a football play. Everything in it tells the players at every position what to do. Example, "Double Right Open. Z-Orbit, Scat Left, 787 F-Drag On 2" The play tells the formation, shifts/motion, o-line protection, base-route concept and snap count.
