This was probably one of the best Elizabeth Taylor performances ever. She completely deserved the Oscar. Shes fabulous.

Hard to believe that Elizabeth Taylor was only 32 years old when she pulled off this Oscar winning performance. I'd say that this and her performances in "Suddenly, Last Summer" and "Giant" were her greatest. Under the control of a good director, she could knock the ball out of the ballpark.

Elizabeth Taylor is a great film actress. There is never a false moment, never... the power, the range, the spontaneity, the deeply knowing authenticity of her emotional life is overwhelming.

Well, it helped too having your real life husband playing her movie husband. They were so suited for each other as both outstanding actors but the sad part is some of the really poor movies they made just for the money....Funny that they married each other twice. As the saying re men about women goes, "can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em"....

In my opinion, Elizabeth Taylor's performance as Martha is the best female acting that I've ever seen!

Both Burton and Taylor did an Oscar winning performance, period. Not only that but one of the greatest acting duo...

Elizabeth Tayor's crowning jewel of acting. She had many gems but this was her peak, this was her best!

My favorite line of this scene: "Do we really have to go through all this?" HILARIOUS!!! And it manages to sum up the entire evening for these characters. I still can't believe how good this film was. Completely caught off guard by the lead performances. AMAZING.

Nobody can say Elizabeth picks movie roles to focus on her exceptional beauty. No wonder she won the Oscar twice. "Besides being one of the most beautiful faces to lighten up the Hollywood cinema, she's my favorite for her sheer honesty that shines through.

Michelle Duffy, Albee knew Cruelty.

What I love about this scene is that it just snowballs and bedlam erupts. The bedlam of their crumbling marriage and that emotional poison they inflict on each other. Truly magnificent

Perhaps the most underrated of the truly great film actresses, Elizabeth Taylor gives a performance for the ages as Martha in Edward Albee's disturbing masterwork, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'

In my opinion. One of the best performances EVER in the history of film. Thank you Liz.

@@randywhite3947 Liz Taylor possibly always saw herself as a sympathetic romantic lead, but she did so much better when playing disturbed and selfish harridans. Likewise with Richard Burton; a naturally brilliant actor who was cast as a "face" in most of his earlier work, but who was more effective as a villain, most notably in the film of that title and in "1984." Incidentally, one of the best screen "wicked woman" portrayals I have ever seen was Dawn French, of all people, playing an innovative aged-care nurse in a BBC TV "Screen 1" episode called "Tender Loving Care."

This movie kept me on edge shortly after it started to the end. While it's not the type of movie I generally watch once I did watch it once I got myself a copy and I watch it at least 2 or 3 times a year, it's no doubt the most watched film in my collection. Alien and Leatherface have nothing but blood once you've seen George and Martha in action.

She is the best actress that ever LIVED !!! She soooo good OMG !! I love HERRR ❤️❤️👏🏼

Love this movie. All the actors were incredible, especially Liz. (One of the greatest acting feats recorded on film.) This scene is great because the camera work gives us a staggering drunk's view. Brilliant! Also, in this scene ,we can see Sandy Dennis getting ready to blow chunks. Lo!

I thought Burton was even better. But there is NO OTHER ACTRESS who could have done better than Taylor. She can be the bitchiest bitch in the world! Even better than Davis, because Taylor was more feminine.

This movie wouldn't be the same without Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. A movie that deserves to be seen. One of my favourite films!

She's phenomenal in this. A great actress.

she's breath-taking, and her portrayal of martha is so courageous in this film. sorry, but it's hard to believe anyone would say she was "just a star" and not a true actor!

Such a horrible feeling being a kid hearing your parents scream at each other and there is nothing you can do about it. Generations of kids grown up with this, even being normal to some, and awful to witness in public to those families who air their dirty laundry for all to see like their life is the Jerry Springer show.

Not only was that fall-out-of-your-chair funny, it was a bold move to go with a parody of a movie maybe 1% of their viewers would have recognized.

Liz gave the greatest performanace in a film with this performance. Still shocks me to this day.

I agree completely. I am shocked when I see it. I can't think of another film performance by an actress that has ever reached this level.

yesterday was the anniversary of her death 7 years ago and AMC played this movie. I never saw it before and I was blown away how great these 4 actors were in this movie. Especially Elizabeth. She was wayyyyyyyyy ahead of her time. Good grief she was absolutely brilliant!!!!!

Some of the best acting I've ever scene, a disturbing movie.

This is the movie that finally pushed the Hollywood envelope regarding language. 46 years later, it is still considered an R rated picture.

One of the best performances on the big screen, ever.

I saw this one yesterday and was just blown away by how perfect and how... timeless it is. I almost couldn't believe it was made in 1966. That's the mark of a great movie. I'm going to buy it if I can find it on DVD actually :D

I've often wondered how close to their real marriage this was. I've seen this dozens of times, and Liz's performance still blows me away. Her finest acting.

omg...i want to cry. it was this movie and it was this performance that inspired me to do acting years ago, and now as a professional I still unconsciously follow in her footsteps. Without knowing who she was, I just knew, if i was an artist... I would want to be an artist like HER. Your legacy is immortal, Elizabeth Taylor.

The cast - beyond perfect. George Segal's face @ 1:29! Richard and Elizabeth at the top of their game. IMO, this is the greatest film they made together. Don't forget Mike NIchols' direction either. Tippy top notch!

This is my favorite acting moment from her in the movie. And there are many contenders but the pure venom here is sooooo palpable. God she is amazing in this role.

Great acting on both of their parts, I should rent this movie.

Nobody can do this..like her!

You would never think that a movie about two drunk people ( a husband and wife) arguing, shouting and screaming while entertaining guests, could be so outstanding and riveting!! Superior acting by the everyone!!

This is acting at it's finest. The chemistry is magical and so are the camera angles.

I don't know why but I somehow like the way she says "Getting angry baby? huh?" I guess it is just Liz's talent keeping my attention. She will be missed!

You are so right about that! Actually he was robbed every single nomination for the Academy Award. Here he should have won, no question about it. He is completely sensational as George. He was the true star and once again he shows what a great actor he was, he was almost as good in The Spy who came in from the cold (the year before), but the Great Burton was ALWAYS sensational, the greatest actor there ever was and still is.

She's got all of George's pronouns down. "Him, it, that, there...." Such love.

I've read that they had wanted Bette Davis for the part of Martha and I just can't imagine it. Bette Davis would've looked too old, and her acting style was obviously rather antiquated by 1966. Elizabeth Taylor's acting was more modern, and more grounded in my opinion.

I agree that Elizabeth’s style was more modern and fitting for the part. I disagree about Bette being/looking too old. Yes, the smoking did age her but Martha is an alcoholic and been through the ringer so she’s suppose to look a bit rundown. My only complaint is that they didn’t age Elizabeth a little more.

I had no idea that American Dad did a parody of this with Roger and Francine! Too funny!

These are the kind of movies I love. Great dialogue, raw emotion and fantastic acting.

Best dialogue of any movie I've ever seen. There are SO many memorable scenes in the movie. When Richard Burton is out talking on the lawn w/Segal about his prep school days describing riding home on the bus after a "big night out." The scene at the roadhouse. The scene in the parking lot at the roadhouse. Some of the interactions at their home between various members of the cast. Segal and Dennis played their parts well but the performances by Burton and Taylor were overpowering.

People get lost in her beauty and fame, but Elizabeth was damn great actress

@RichardElden, Elizabeth Taylor was 33 when this was filmed and gained weight for this role and was aged to look 20 yrs older. THIS WAS FILMED IN THE MID SIXTIES. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Taylor in the early 90's and she was beautiful and very very nice.,unlike you.

RIP Liz Taylor...words don't describe how amazing you were. You conned the term superstar....I don't hink anyone will ever live up to it. Shine bright in heaven, baby! Because YOU ARE A STAR!

You are aware that Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is not a biography of the author, and that Mrs. Woolf is not a character in the play or film? Elizabeth Taylor portrays Martha, wife of an associate professor - a far cry from Virginia Woolf, who was a poet, wife of a political theorist and author. The title of the film (and play) is a reference to a joke that is references throughout the story.

I watched this on TMC and I found myself entranced in the acting. The movie just felt so real.

Elizabeth Taylor is definitely maybe favorite actress in this film.

The movie would be about one minute long--they'd kill each other.

The only scenes I've seen that come close to this intensity in recent movies were between Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz in Vicky Christina Barcelona.

RIP madame Liz...you were exceptional!

What a good movie I read the play first and could follow along exactly, plus it made me realize how talented you have to be, to be an actor, they really brought the words to life

Edward said this wasn't about a gay couple. This was. A couple who's house he went to one Summer in upstate New York. When this came out, it was when gays were still considered "sick" (1966) And he had the smarts to change the sex dynamics.

Richard was amazing as George

I never cared much for Dame Taylor, but this is one of my favorite movies ... I always figured that one day I'll hear this monologue myself!

It is relevant the moment when Martha breaks "the rules of the game" and goes to reality by humiliating George. This old married couple has for twenty years concealed their frustrations and failures through games and fiction, but at this moment Martha shamefully exposes George not by appealing to fiction but to the reality of his failure. At that precise moment George decides to stop the "game" when Martha painfully exposes the truth.

Richard Burton stole this movie. Its kind of sad to watch him here, because he really could have been a great actor. Edward Albee said he was the best George ever, he called his performance incredible.

Richard Burton was absolutely magnificent. Mesmerizing. This is the only film I have ever watched a second time immediately.

Watching Elizabeth Taylor as Martha is like flashing back to my mom and me as a kid in the 60's...

One of the best films ever.

The scenes in this great movie remind me of some scenes in another great movie, "Raging Bull"--conversations/arguments performed so flawlessly that you cringe/wince at the dialogue because you feel as though you're eavesdropping on the private lives of others. This movie is one of my favorites, Burton should have received the Oscar he was nominated for. Both the ladies (Dennis & Taylor) did win Oscars.

"I actually fell for him...It, That There. And so I married the SOB." BEEN there! Passion, joy, betrayal, agony, regret, the whole nine yards. A funny little thing called Love.
